Spider-Man: Brand New Day Originally Featured Chameleon With Mind-Control - Here's Why It Didn't Happen

Spider-Man: Brand New Day writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have confirmed that The Chameleon was originally the movie's lead villain and revealed why he was ultimately replaced by Jean Grey.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first Spider-Man movie without one of the web-slinger's villains front and centre. The Scorpion and The Hand appear, but Peter Parker finds himself dealing primarily with a vengeful Jean Grey.

Early on, there were rumblings that the movie might feature a shape-shifting villain, who was likely female. Now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have confirmed that they originally intended to use classic Spidey villain, The Chameleon.

The brother of Kraven the Hunter, Dmitri Smerdyakov has been causing problems for Peter since Amazing Spider-Man #1. Talking to Jeff Goldsmith, McKenna explained why they ultimately had to pivot from the twisted master of disguise.

"We came up with metamorphosis, and everyone was very excited about that idea. Then, we were trying to come up with a villain. That is very important. We had mind control, but we hadn't settled on what villain that would be. We loved the idea. In the early days, we were talking about Die Hard with a Vengeance. 'Can we just do a Spider-Man story that was set in ground-level New York, where you had a mysterious bomber?' A villain that was basically toying with Spider-Man."

"Erik and I were trying to think of a villain that would fit that bill, and we were thinking, 'God, what's a classic Spider-Man villain no one has really done yet in the films?' Well, Chameleon, but how do you do that? They've done Skrulls; they're not going to do masks. How do we do that? And then we hit upon the idea of mind control, and what if Chameleon was using mind control? But then they had already used Dmitri in Kraven, so it was like, 'Agh, you can't do Chameleon.'"

"That's what got us on the path of mind control, and then [that] eventually led to us getting the perfect character for that role, Jean Grey."

So, that's another strike against the critically panned Kraven the Hunter movie released in 2024. Based on what McKenna is saying here, their take on Dmitri would have been vastly different from the comics, with mind control instead of his ability to look like anyone he wanted.

There's something of a crossover there, but Jean's introduction ultimately made a bigger impact, particularly with Sadie Sink next set to reprise the role in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot.

Elsewhere in the interview, the writers debunked reports that Anne Hathaway was being lined up to play the Leper Queen, but acknowledged that it's possible the villain was discussed during the early writing stages. They also confirm that scenes with Peter being stalked by spiders were left on the cutting room floor due to pacing issues.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

@OneMoreTime - Yes so they never had any genuine desire to adapt and introduce Jean Grey. They simply needed a VILLAIN, so they decided Marvel Girl could be made into a sociopath for their film. Amazing 👏

@MCUKnight11 - yes please

I would love if Hobgoblin is next and the backstory is Roderick or whoever being inspired by the Green Goblin we got in NWH.

@JFerguson - i dont think Marvel has an interested in actually making a villain like Kraven a main villain after having this Spiderman fight Thanos, they’ve made half his rogues irrevelent even more now that he’s “evolved”

I’m sorry, but Chameleon is such a boring character except when paired with Kraven. Everything he can do, Mysterio can do better and more interesting.

I've just learned to accept that we'll probably never get a traditional solo Spider-Man-vs. rogues villain movie within the MCU.

Vulture was the closest we got to a classic matchup, but Tony stepping in to clean up the mess every time kind of took away from it being as personal as it could have been.

Mysterio didn't feel like Mysterio at all. Besides the dream sequence, he hardly used any illusions, and his whole connection to SHIELD and Tony Stark made him feel more like an Iron Man villain.

No Way Home was built around Tobey and Andrew's villains.

And now, it was Jean Grey and some Damage Control director.

Surprisingly, Brand New Day is the worst offender, yet somehow it ended up being my favorite Holland Spider-Man movie. Maybe it's because despite not having a normal villain, it felt the most like Peter's movie instead of someone else's.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Spiderman got to interact with the police and the public more as the friendly neighborhood hero which made this version of Spiderman better. The love that he got at the end was priceless also!!!

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I just wrote a comment about this, but I agree. 10 years in and Scorpion is all this reboot has to show for when it comes to a classic feel of his rogues gallery.

@incredibleTalk - Definitely. Even though there were other MCU heroes in it, he never felt overshadowed this time around. It was his movie. The cheering at the end made me teary eyed. Such a simple but effective way to show how much this character means to people. Spider-Man 3 did it too, but I feel like it hit harder in Brand New Day.

Approaching 10 years and Scorpion is the only Spider-Man villain. Vulture and Mysterio were Stark villains. And we're already talking about bringing in Miles? This reboot had so much potential to be a classic Spidey story.

@Loohnutick - nah ,Vulture & Mysterio were definitely Spider Man villains

There have been versions where Vulture has a grudge against Norman Osborn but Spidey is there to stop them so does that make him a Norman Osborn villain?.

Also given there were in a montage but I think Ramrod , Tombstone , Boomerang & Tarantula are also Spidey villains.

I actually commented way back when the first BND trailer was announced that maybe the villain was a new take on Chameleon, and maybe instead of some guy who can change his face, he could jump from one body to another. I was fine with it being Jean Gray, and it worked in the movie, and Sadie Sink did very well. But now knowing the writers themselves actually had that same idea of a mind-jumping Chameleon, it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity.

Yeah , I’m glad that they didn’t happen because I don’t like Chameleon with mind control powers since that kinda defeats the purpose of the name tbh (unless that gave him the ability to distort other people’s perception of him and make them think he’s someone else).

Anyway , A Die Hard with a Vengeance- esque Spidey or just superhero film in general of two mismatched heroes trying to stop a supervillain in a race against time could be fun!!.
