Spider-Man: Brand New Day Star Sadie Sink Breaks Silence On Jean Grey, V-Max, And Playing A "Villain"

Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Sadie Sink has finally opened up about playing the MCU's Jean Grey, revealing why she agreed to portray the iconic mutant, the movie's big V-Max twist, and more.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached $500 million at the North American box office in record time, and the secrecy surrounding Sadie Sink's character is no more. In her first post-release interview about playing the MCU's Jean Grey, the actress was finally free to discuss her debut as the iconic mutant.

Talking to Variety, Sink admitted that she "knew nothing" about Jean before Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito offered her the role. However, as soon as she started researching the character, saying yes was a "no-brainer" for the Stranger Things alum.

"She’s such an iconic figure in X-Men and in comics, and I’m very excited to bring my iteration of her to life," Sink said, adding that it was "really important" to give Jean a backstory in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

"She’s very flawed. You’re meeting her at a strange point, because I don’t think she is someone who wants to harm, but she herself has been harmed, so that’s all she knows," Sink explained. "So, giving her that backstory and a motive behind her actions is really powerful. They told me that I was the villain, but that you’re not actually the villain, which is how I played her."

"I don’t really want to lean into, like, this bad guy aura. Because in her brain it’s totally justified. Which I mean, I agree. I think it is."

Sink also opened up on the big V-Max reveal. Throughout Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's teased as some type of MacGuffin, only for us to learn that, in reality, Jean is unknowingly searching for a faded sticker on a vent that was the last thing Jean's sister, Sara, saw in the Department of Damage Control before dying.

"I remember in the original script there was more dialogue surrounding the realisation that it meant nothing," she recalled. "Jean had lines where she was talking it out loud. Then, on the day, it was kind of like, 'Oh no, I think it just needs to be a look.' It’s gonna be clearer, like you don’t really need to speak it through. I like that that’s the thing that unleashes her, just that anger over all of it being for nothing."

"I think, also, she kind of knew that her sister was gone. She’s been hanging on to this last piece of information, but I think she knows that it’s a long shot that she’s even still around. So, it was just kind of like the final trigger for her or the final confirmation."

"In the early conversations and rehearsals, it was always just really important to [Destin Daniel Cretton] that she’s a young girl in pain," Sink continued. "In finding her voice and figuring out what it would look like, there is this pressure to live up to what a villain in a superhero movie looks like, but our plan was to just go the opposite way."

"To not focus on the evil bits and play into that too much, but rather the really angry, hurt teenager — which I have experience in playing, it seems. [Laughs.]"

Sink later confirmed that she shot every scene where she's talking through another actor, so they could use that as reference for the moments that they're possessed by the psychic. She noted that it was "cool" to see "how people are carrying it or mimicking me in certain ways - Zendaya, especially."

While Jean's actions throughout Spider-Man: Brand New Day are definitely questionable, she's not a full-blown villain, and Peter Parker helps her find redemption.

That happens when the web-slinger allows the mutant to experience a conversation he had with Aunt May shortly after the events of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

"I was so excited to get to that scene just because it feels like every scene before that is her suppressing emotion or hurt, and dealing with it through her powers or through manipulating others. But that’s kind of when the walls come down when she just hears everything that she needs to hear in that moment. Because as strong as she seems and as her actions are, she’s really just so terrified and so alone, and I think resents Peter up until that point for thinking that he’s not alone."

"Like the whole thing with MJ too, it’s like, well, 'You’re holding on to the memory of having people in your life, but they’re gone, and you don’t get to have that.' That’s what the whole MJ manipulation was for: to remind him that like, 'Oh yeah, this is what you can’t have, and this is what this has taken from you.'"

"So, I guess in that final moment, she’s backed into a corner where it’s like, 'Yeah, this person has hurt too,' but what he’s done with his loss and isolation, he’s turned it around and is offering her what he’s learned. And it’s kind of what he needs to hear and remind himself of in that moment, too. So yeah, shooting that was nice, and I had like a good idea of like what needed to be done. I think that was my last day of shooting too, so it just felt like a perfect way to just tie it up and show the core of who she is in that moment."

The first official still of Sink's Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also been released. You can check that out below.

She's a talented young lady and perfect for the role of Jean.

She will be one of the biggest acting names over the next decade. I wish her the best.

@Lisa89 - also soup didn't kill zod in the og, he was arrested
There is a well-known deleted/extended scene from Superman II (1980) that shows General Zod, Ursa, and Non surviving the finale.

@harryba11zack - It was cut (not canon) because it was nonsensical. All three were powerless and would not have survived.

SPOILER:

There are certain civillians that Jean "jumped into" who in no universe could possibly make it out alive, or mentally sane after what they went through. Yes, certain pieces of dialogue later in the movie did make an effort to establish in some scenes that none of the shots she took as Frank or any other soldier were lethal, but that's not enough of an excuse. Certain moments like the elderly bearded cleaning services guy stepping back into traffic should have been removed.

That said, if there's a silver lining to be taken from such an aggressive outburst like the km-wide one in the final scene, it's that it manages to establish mutants as dangerously uncontrollable, regardless of their later noble intentions thanks to Xavier's guidance.

@TemporarilyHere - that’s fair.

I do think if they utilize it then it could be a good starting point for mutant fear and hatred in the MCU.

@TemporarilyHere -

"none of the shots she took as Frank or any other soldier were lethal"
"Certain moments like the elderly bearded cleaning services guy stepping back into traffic should have been removed."

Her sister is taken and rather than try to body hop or recruit Spider-man to find out information about her sister, instead she hyper-fixates on the V-Max message. She intentionally controls a civilian into a tank which she straps a bomb to and crashes through civilians including police and aimed to go through a tour bus loaded with civilians. She's firing a machine gun from the top of the tank with no regard simply because Spider-man is there.

She still actively tortures people mentally, physically and emotionally. She tries to murder MJ and delights in her mental and physical abuse of people throughout the movie including shooting people in the leg as opposed to just jumping into their minds or the mind of a chain of people to get to Metzger.

The movie is fundamentally broken in that she never just goes straight for Metzger, body jumping to him in order to specifically search his mind for what he did with her sister. Jean Grey is absolutely character assassinated in this movie, it's not possible for her to be viewed as anything other than a monster.

The only reason she does all this is because originally this character was going to be Xuân Cao Mạnh known by her alias, Karma.

Karma is an impulsive and reckless red-headed body hopping mutant who is on the hunt for her siblings, including a younger sister, who were kidnapped by someone who was experimenting on them. She came into conflict with Spider-man believing him to be allied with a criminal organisation. She attempted to take over Spider-man's mind but was unable to complete her plan. Spider-man learned more about her and allied with her to track down her siblings who were being given to a female leader of The Hand.

"That said, if there's a silver lining to be taken from such an aggressive outburst like the km-wide one in the final scene, it's that it manages to establish mutants as dangerously uncontrollable"

I feel it worked but not in the way they intended, because I hate Jean Grey in this and I hate what it means for mutants that the person that will result in them eventually being genocided is Spider-man via him being an idiot and creating the universal inhibitor. I think this film fundamentally damages mutants to the point where they are irredeemable.

Peter Parker lacks understanding or empathy and through his mutation almost kills Scorpion, intentionally aims to hit a cop car almost killing a cop, grabs his girlfriend by the throat.

Jean Grey views it as her right to mentally, physically and emotionally torture people including using their bodies as puppets for her will for fun or to get whatever she wants. There's zero self reflection or acknowledgement by her that what she is doing is wrong. Her powers directly and indirectly result in deaths. She only stops when she's praised by Aunt May in a memory.

Still killed that old man that got hit by the cab, threw MJ off a building and then let the Hulk loose in a government building with innocent employees and pedestrians below... but ok..not the villian. Lol

Some Snyder logic there, but I liked the movie.

I hope there's an extended cut that shows where Peter gets his $ and also the Punisher chatting with the cops at the hospital who are hunting him still as a wanted man

@UnderBelly - yeah they did this with the Flag Smashers and Wanda and Loki to an extent.
Committed some pretty detestable acts but want us to understand/sympathize for their actions.

Flag Smashers commit acts of terror; Sam: “You have to stop calling them terrorist”

Wanda imprisons a town causing pain and torment to the people there; Monica: “They’ll never know what you sacrificed for them”.

Let’s add Jean to the list

@UnderBelly - technically the X-men are good guys and they fight the government all the time.
I’m not justifying the idea of a character who becomes a hero after killing innocent people but I mean didn’t Bucky become a government official after being a hydra terrorist for majority of his life??

@slickrickdesigns - I mean Bucky was under mind control. Jean was controlling minds. And Bucky's arc at least showed the tourment he went through knowing he physically did those acts, so there was some catharsis. Lets hope we get some from Jean.

I see a way in, to show Xavier knowing how powerful she is and locking off some of her gifts so she doesnt go Pheonix crazy.

I’m glad she can finally talk about it…

I quite liked her version of Jean tbh and thought Sadie did a great job in the role , especially in the third act when she gets confirmation that her sister is dead.

I feel she’s more a “grey” (pun intended) character then a villain in the film (which is moreso Trammell Tillman’s Metzger imo) who now can get the proper guidance & support of Charles Xavier whilst also finding her people & community which will no doubt make her more stable to an extent.

She honestly reminded me a bit moreso of Ultimate Jean Grey who is more hard-edged/rough around the edges then her “616” counterpart but can go that route as she develops more.

Anyway. I also liked that her sister’s “ scrunchie” was yellow & green which makes me think she might use that color scheme in homage of Sara when she gets a costume!!.
