UPDATE: Deadline reports that with a four-day estimate of $21 million for the long Labor Day weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be only $16 million away from breaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $936.6 million record by close of business on Monday.
It should have reached $921 million by then, and as the trade explains, "You don't get there without audiences seeing a movie at least two-to-three times."
The Odyssey will be in second place with a four-day total of $15.2 million, though Coyote vs. ACME won't be far behind with $13 million. The biggest surprise is the Cars re-release, which is eyeing an impressive $8 million total. Onslaught won't even crack the top five, and could make as little as $2 million over the four-day weekend.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the fastest movie to gross over $900 million at the domestic box office. It's also the second movie ever to achieve that feat, joining an exclusive club alongside 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios co-production grossed $1.6 million yesterday (taking its total to $899.8 million), meaning it has officially passed $900 million today.
This is a historic feat, especially as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently $92 million ahead of where Avengers: Endgame was during the same point in its run. It only started $3 million ahead after a record-breaking opening weekend, so Spidey's latest blockbuster has had serious legs.
As things stand, the movie should end its run around $950 million, meaning it will also beat The Force Awakens' 11-year-old record to become the highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S.
Since opening on July 31, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has slipped to #2 on two occasions. The first came on Friday, August 21, when Insidious: Out of the Further opened. The second time was a little more unexpected and happened this past Wednesday when The Odyssey beat it by just over $100,000.
While a tentative Digital and Blu-ray release date for the movie has been revealed, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is showing no sign of slowing down at the box office and likely won't be pushed from #1 permanently until Resident Evil opens in two weeks.
Despite this $2.3 billion success, Spider-Man 5 has not been officially announced. At this rate, it probably won't swing into theaters until at least 2029.
