SPIDER-NOIR Will Compete In Comedy Categories At The Emmys - What Does It Mean For Prime Video Series?

In a surprise twist, it's been revealed that the upcoming Spider-Noir TV series will compete in the Comedy categories at the Emmys. Here's what that means for the small-screen Spider-Man story.

The first trailer for Spider-Noir suggested the upcoming Prime Video series would be a drama with, if anything, some major horror undertones. There may be more to the show than meets the eye, though.

According to a report from Gold Derby, the plan is for Spider-Noir to compete in the Comedy categories in the first Emmys cycle. Wonder Man is expected to be pushed in the same category, and this could lead to the series—assuming it's well-received—squaring off with the likes of Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking

What about Spider-Noir makes it a comedy? That's a question many fans are asking today, and Nicolas Cage's barmy performance may be the answer.

During a recent interview, executive producer Phil Lord said, "That trailer is great. They did a wonderful job. [Cage is] amazing. He had this great idea, which was, 'I want to play this like a spider pretending to be a person.'"

Miller added, "Like, 'After what happened to me, I'm more spider than person, and I have to act like a human in public, and in private I can be my true self.' So he sometimes goes to the movies, his character, and practices and studies what the actors are doing so he can use it in his real life."

So, Ben Reilly will be more spider than man, an interesting twist that lends itself well to a zany, comedic performance from the Ghost Rider star.

It's too soon to say how fans will respond to Spider-Noir, especially as it's taking some major liberties with the comics. For most, the involvement of Lord and Miller is enough to give it a shot, particularly as they've overseen the animated Spider-Verse movies for Sony Pictures.

You can rewatch the first Spider-Noir trailer in the player below.

Spider-Noir's cast includes Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage (Adaptation), Emmy Award-winning actor Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Karen Rodriguez (The Hunting Wives), Abraham Popoola (Atlas), with SAG Award-winning actor Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), and Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Guest stars include Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster.

Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. Emmy Award-winning director Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve) directed and executive produced the first two episodes.

Emmy Award winner Harry Bradbeer (FleabagKilling Eve) directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Oren Uziel (The Lost City22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel's The PunisherShantaram) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.

Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series with the Academy Award–winning team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Lord and Miller executive produce, with Aditya Sood and Dan Shear. Amy Pascal also serves as an executive producer through Pascal Pictures.

All episodes of Spider-Noir premiere on Prime Video on May 27.

That is odd but hasn’t stuff like this been contested before in the Emmys such as the Bear being nominated in the comedy category?.

From what I know of that show , it seems like it has comedic elements in it but it’s moreso a drama which Spider Noir could be as well…

Hell , I don’t particularly either think of Wonder Man as a comedy aswell but moreso a “dramedy” since it straddles both genres imo.

Anyway , Cage’s approach to the role sounds insane but also quintessentially him (and we did see bits of his more off kilter line delivery & mannerisms in the trailer) so I could see that being the reason the show lands in the Emmy’s comedy category though I hope it doesn’t muddy the waters tonally within the show but we’ll see.

Looking forward to Spider-Noir as of now!!.

The Martian won Best Comedy at the Golden Globes. The Martian is my favorite movie ever and while it is certainly funny, it is not a comedy.

It means nothing. Studios will shoehorn movies and series into categories if they think it increases chances of winning awards.

@ptick - I didn’t know that so just lends credence to this meaning nothing really.

I did like The Martian though…

Did you see Project Hail Mary yet?.

It means they'll take yet another dark, gritty, noir series and turn it into a comedy MCU fest. I can't with these clowns anymore.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

The Bear has 21 Emmy wins, and they're classified as a comedy. It's meaningless now lol but I want Looney Tunes Cage!

Hopefully that means “dry and witty” which could lend to the noir aspect. I doubt it will be slapstick or silly jokes.
