BOX OFFICE: MONSTERS UNIVERSITY And WORLD WAR Z Set To Push MAN OF STEEL To #3

Unfortunately for the Zack Snyder helmed and Christopher Nolan produced Man of Steel, two big new releases - Monsters University and World War Z - will push the Superman reboot down to third position at the North American box office this weekend. Read on for details!

According to matinee trends, Pixar's Monsters University will take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend with a predicted haul of between $25 - $28 million for today and a $75 million total. These numbers would in fact make the Monsters Inc prequel Pixar's second highest opening behind only Toy Story 3. Second place meanwhile looks set to go to World War Z. Despite many predicting that it would be a flop for the studio, it now appears as if the PG-13 zombie flick will nab $20 million today and between $50 - $55 million this weekend. This does of course mean that Man of Steel will fall to third place with $17 - $19 million today and a $50 million weekend. However, you may have noticed just how close these figures are to those for World War Z, so there is still a chance that Superman's triumphant return to the big screen will steal second place. As per usual, these are only very rough figures at this point, giving us an idea of how things will play out over the next couple of days. We'll be sure to let you know the official results ASAP!

WWZ really is surprising me especially if it beats MOS
given all those awful reports

It'll be interesting overseas with WWZ opening in a lot of major markets
We'll see if Pitt can beat MOS or the other way around

I'm seeing Man of Steel again this weekend, can't wait. I will see World War Z sometime in the next week or so, and Monster's University looks like pure donkey shit. Pixar has really gone downhill in the past couple years.

I 100% called this one. Disney(Marvel) placing other properties in release market to damage the competition.

BTW...Monsters U was highly enjoyable so it will get excellent word of mouth over the weekend. The theater was PACKED with Moms + 3...

Monster's Inc. was a fantastic movie and will be remembered for years to come. Monster's University will be remembered for a couple of months. Now, have I seen it? No. But can I have an opinion of it before it comes out? Yes. And my opinion of it is one of shit, shit, and more shit. The [frick] are you doing Pixar?
