Bringing the HACKman BACK to Metropolis.

Bringing the HACKman BACK to Metropolis.

What if......?

With the Superman Reboot soon underway... I wanted to explore the possibilities of what the Nolan brothers might do in regards to who his first enemies might be.

Something tells me that they won't be casting aside the idea of leaving Lex Luthor completely out of the picture. Certainly we will be blessed with more than one villain in this sequel but lets focus on who we might see as his greatest enemy to date. An enemy that has been there no matter who else the MAN of Steel is confronted with.

Lex Luthor has always been in the background and if we are to expect this kind of scenario with this forthcoming semi-reboot then who would you like to see as the one who plots with villains more powerful that he is, to bring to pass the down fall of our greatest hero?....SUPERMAN.

My pick for Lex Luthor with be Gene Hackman, yes, you heard it right. My ALL TIME favorite and in my opinion would be the best choice. Perhaps in the semi-reboot, Nolans efforts will be not to blotting out the first two films but rather to "recreating" or blot out SUPERMAN RETURNS. While I enjoyed SR I agree that it had its flaws, so moving forward...

Lex Luthor is still in prison and has escaped with the aid of Brainiac and or with the aid of INTERGANG (see CBMGIRLS article SUPERMAN REBOOT RUMORS). Lex is a changed man and not for the better. He's not comical or interested in real estate or in playing along with Superman... he just wants him dead. This would be a character that is perhaps similar to that of SPACEY but much darker and more bitter than ever.
Superman never left Metropolis and has no catching up to do in regards to Lois Lane. This is a soft serve take on the new film that we might see. Lets hear who you might want to see as LL....I vote HACKMAN to reprise the role.

Naterator here signing off. this is my first article so let the criticism fly.

Sorry fella I agree with '@Pure Justice', gene Hackman although a good actor was given a bad role - although Donner's Superman films were iconic the villains were always campy in nature and the past is best left in the past.

I agree that Superman should die in the Nolan film and/or the villain should be darker in genre with a real mind set of ending Supes.

I think Superman Returns got really interesting with the kryptonite expansion and almost killing Superman, but it was too late to have a real impact.

Lex Luthor in SR was pretty boring to be honest, i think lex is a very textural character with a lot of history and a lot of character elements all shown repetitively on Smallville which make him more than the criminal mastermind that he is portrayed to be. That extra dimension needs to be expressed on film ASAP.

No way. I HATED his Lex Luthor. I like the Hack as an actor but that Lex was AWFUL. He was campy and boring.

sorry guys i thought i discribed a darker character for lex luthor than the one that he portrayed in the donner films. he would not be campy in this later version. just saying. thanks for your input.

I hated Hackman's luthor. Too comedy-ish and gimmicky. He was less threatening than a pooch. My choice for Luthor would be Billy Zane...he actually looks like Lex when he's bald and he's very good at playing an evil, rich socialite which is what Lex is SUPPOSED to be.

Hackman is one of the best actors in the business. The reason his Lex Luthor was campy was because of the the direction, and the script he was given. He could play an incredibly Evil and Villianous Luthor in the right movie. My only concern would be "Is he too old for the role?". I personally would love to see him reprise his role as Luthor. If not him then Micheal Rosenbaum. He was one the best facets of Smallville.

No 1 with a bullet: Daniel Day Lewis. No 2 (who would kill to do it and bring his A-game): Nicolas Cage. No 3: Viggo Mortensen.

Both Spacey and Hackman sucked not because they are bad actors (obviously) but because the way Luthor was supposed to be portrayed. I wanna see a criminal mastermind who behaves like one. I don't want more "funny" Luthors. I'd love someone who could be smart, evil, cold and intimidating. Someone like Ed harris. And Manganiello for Superman.

I'm NOT a Smallville Fan.. but Rosenbuam isn't a bad Lex Luthor.. for Smallville anyway. Hackman was great in 1979, but by today's standards.. he's apparently "campy". Go figure. I didn't like Spacey... not that he was bad.. or "sucked" (like most of you know-it-all's would say)..I just didn't care for him.

He may be too old for the role now, but I always thought Albert Finney would have made a real bad ass Lex Luthor.

hey guys ...thanks for your input
@LP4 read the article again...this new portrayal of Luthor by Hackman wouldnt be the same campy comic relief Luthor that was in the earlier films. We have all seen Hackman in films where he has taken on roles (UNFORGIVEN, ENEMY OF THE STATE, RUNAWAY JURY) that would constitute the kinda LUTHOR that we could all enjoy. We know he can act.... with that in mind it would be awesome to see him back in Metropolis.

@ROMACK ...nah i dont think he is too old for the role right now. He would be classic. the old billionaire who has connections...who stays hidden behind the scenes with a cigar in his mouth. I think that he would a great old "boss" type that you would really want Superman to put away. Superman would never pound on him...or any human being he has swore to protect....he pounds on other aliens. i only bring that up because people want to see punches thrown... Luthor is just the instigator...and i believe that HACKMAN could be the classic instigator between villain and super hero.

@ ultimarex....i could see DDL as a LL. i loved his latest movie THERE WILL BE BLOOD. i thought he was epic in that....not so sure about CAGE or MORTENSEN.

@ Pure Justice...I also am a little biased and am a HUGE SMALLVILLE FAN but in order to use ROSEN i think we would need to bring on WELLING to fill the tights...wHIch i also am not opposed to...thanks for your input man.

@jokesonyou... i agree with you that he was campy in the 70's and 80's...but lets face it...everything in those coupple decades was campy....hollywood was campy. lets not also forget that HE WAS LEX LUTHOR....there were no other incarnations of LEX LUTHOR that were any different before then. Even in the old tv shows...Luthor was even campier than Hackmans. TImes have changed and im sure if Hackman were brought back...he wouldnt disappoint a soul with his ruthlessness on the Last SOn.

@ Naterator. Maybe I should remember that it's really hard to express sarcasim in type. Maybe the "Go figure" didn't express that.

ahahha i know there are at least a few people that have posted here that understand that im not asking for the same Hackman portrayal of Luthor....can those of you that understand this explain it to the rest since i think all they do is read the headline and not the article.... bastards,,,,hehheheh

thanks ROMACK... i totally think HACKMAN would fit right in with the NOLANVERSE bringing out some dark villainny for this next SUPERMAN film. You just have to imagine a Lex Luthor that has been behind bars for 30 years and has had nothing on his mind other than obliterating the MOS the first chance he gets. I know that it probably wouldnt happen but i would totally dig a Lex Luthor of this kind rather than a YOUNG BIlly Zane....If people want an older Superman then they need an "experienced in mischief and evil" Lex Luthor.
