David Corenswet Reveals How Man Of Tomorrow Is The DCU's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Superman star David Corenswet has revealed new details about James Gunn's upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow, explaining why it feels a lot like the DCU's version of The Empire Strikes Back.

Superman was the light-hearted, optimistic take on the hero that many fans had been asking for after the DCEU's grim, gritty take on Clark Kent. However, it sounds like next summer's Man of Tomorrow will be a little darker.

During a recent interview, David Corenswet opened up about what fans can expect from James Gunn's Superman sequel. While the actor chose his words carefully, he likened the Superman/Lex Luthor team-up to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

The middle chapter in George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy introduced a Luke Skywalker who was far more mature and experienced than the young farm boy we'd met in A New Hope. Han Solo and Leia Organa's personalities had also deepened, and it seems we can expect something similar for Man of Tomorrow's leads.

"The thing that I thought of was the opening of Empire Strikes Back and how every time I watch that movie I'm so excited when you re-meet Luke and Han and Leia," Corenswet says in the video below. It was really exciting hearing James Gunn talk about how he wanted to bring the characters, especially the relationships of Superman and Lex, and then of Clark and Lois, into their second phase."

"They've been through more in the interim," he continued. "And so, in Man of Tomorrow, we meet them in those more solid, established situations, but the stakes are obviously that those things are gonna be put at risk."

Clark and Lois were still a relatively new couple when we met them in Superman, so seeing their relationship deepen should be very satisfying for fans. As for the Man of Steel, he had a brief cameo in Supergirl, but it didn't really offer any insights into what he's been up to on Earth.

Lex, however, is a particularly interesting case, given that he's been working with A.R.G.U.S. and Rick Flag Sr. to create Salvation and get himself into a much cushier prison.

In Man of Tomorrow, Superman will be forced to team up with Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac, a threat not just to Metropolis but to the entire world.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the movie stars include David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. However, as we mentioned above, we still don't know whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman. There's also speculation that Eva De Dominici is playing one of the characters, and there's always a chance the Diana Prince rumblings don't pan out. We'll have to wait and see.

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

It's about time Superman started getting the attention he deserves; I hope whatever Gunn is working on next is a 3rd movie.

@TheJok3r - same. Kinda hope it's Brave and the Bold he's writting, and he's canning Damian in favor of Superman. World's Finest is way more interesting imo

@bkmeijer1 - I wouldn't mind a World's Finest movie if he will direct a 3rd solo Superman movie after. If however this is his last movie, then I would prefer Superman.

So Lex is gonna be his father? Check.

Kidding aside, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie takes some cues from My Adventures with Superman and makes Brainiac a being that was in service of Krypton and went rogue.

@bkmeijer1 - well , that wasn’t just my Adventures with Superman but came from Superman:The Animated series that originated that idea.

@TheVisionary25 - never saw that to be honest. Cool that it has been floating around even longer than I thought. Could definitely see that happen in MoT

@bkmeijer1 - yep

I think making Brainiac Krypton connected in the DCU too would be cool and make it personal , especially if he has Kandor bottled up.

@TheVisionary25 - think the comflict also is more interesting because Jor-El is a genocidal maniac and Superman cut all ties with Krypton. Wouldn't be surprised if Brainiac does take it very personal

@bkmeijer1 - I feel like that’s putting things too extreme

I feel like you could say that Jor-El wasn’t a maniac but just misguided and having a low opinion of humanity that could possibly change if he us alive like in some iterations.

That's because the previous movie wasn't an atrocious turd sandwich like superjamesgunnman

Wouldn't Superman need to be comparable to Star Wars first?
supermanrex
supermanrex - 10/6/2026, 10:05 AM
@Ryguy88 - no. its more nuanced and not as literal as you think. its the idea of darker, more mature and emotional stakes are higher that is empire strikes back legacy, not it being a literal sequel to star wars. a movie can be a stand alone movie and still embrace empire strikes back's playbook.

I hope this movie is fantastic, but after the last one, I can’t say I’m very optimistic.

Don't get too comfortable with this movie.

I think it’s less that MOT will be a bit darker but perhaps the relationships between the characters deepen & the stakes get higher which is evident in ESB aswell…

I can see Superman/Clark & Lois for example being on more solid footing & committed to each other but the return of Lex and emergence of Brainiac threaten that.

Anyway looking forward to the film since i thought Superman was solid!!.
