Yesterday evening, Peacemaker Season 2 star Frank Grillo shared a fan-made poster for Man of Tomorrow on Instagram featuring the movie's main cast. The fact that it included Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle and Adria Arjona as Wonder Woman led many to conclude that Grillo had revealed their respective roles in James Gunn's Superman sequel.
Now, though, the filmmaker has been forced to deny this and doesn't seem at all bothered about embarrassing the Rick Flag Sr. actor who reprises the role in the DCU next summer.
"It's Frank reposting somebody because it has his photo in it, and he loves himself," Gunn wrote. "I can assure you Frank doesn't know who Adria is playing in the DCU and whether or not she has any sort of incredibly small cameo in [Man of Tomorrow] or not."
He went on to caution that, "People have been making wayyyyyyyyyyy too much of this," suggesting Arjona may only have a minor role in the movie and isn't necessarily showing up in Man of Tomorrow as the DCU's Diana Prince.
Gunn took things a step further by sharing a screenshot of a conversation with Grillo, in which he chastised the actor and told fans on Threads, "He doesn't know anything." It's unclear why he's upset about Grillo giving people hope about Blue Beetle when Maridueña has confirmed his DC return in the sequel.
Could this all be a clever misdirect, meant to throw fans off the scent and protect Arjona's role as Wonder Woman? It's possible, though Gunn has been transparent about neither Batman nor Wonder Woman necessarily making their DCU debuts anytime soon. It's also hard to believe that work on the Wonder Woman movie hasn't been paused, given the negative response to writer Ana Nogueira's work on Supergirl.
We'll have to wait and see, but DC Studios may be taking the same approach to Arjona that Sony Pictures did with Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That speculation and excitement did wonders for the movie, and Man of Tomorrow recapturing even a fraction of that kind of box office success would be a dream for Gunn.
In Man of Tomorrow, Superman will be forced to team up with Lex Luthor to battle Brainiac, a threat not just to Metropolis but to the entire world.
Written and directed by James Gunn, the movie stars include David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr., Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.
Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, Sinqua Walls, and Adria Arjona will also star. However, as we mentioned above, we still don't know whether the latter is playing Maxima or Wonder Woman. There's also speculation that Eva De Dominici is playing one of the characters, and there's always a chance the Diana Prince rumblings don't pan out. We'll have to wait and see.
Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.
