Lanterns Turned John Stewart Into The Ultimate Surf Dracula — But Can Man Of Tomorrow Make It Right?

Lanterns spent nearly eight hours building up to John Stewart becoming a Green Lantern, only to fumble the payoff. Can DC's bizarre storytelling approach be fixed in Man of Tomorrow?

Comedian Topher Florence first put forward the idea of "Surf Dracula" in 2021. Taking to X, he wrote, "Back in the day, if you did a TV show called 'Surf Dracula,' you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures, but in the streaming era the entire first season's gotta be a long-ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 minutes in the finale."

Does that sound familiar? Well, it should, because that's exactly what Lanterns just did with the DCU's newest addition, John Stewart.

It took the DC Studios TV series nearly eight hours to introduce John Stewart as Green Lantern, but without even showing him "surf for five minutes in the finale." Instead, he makes up an oath with no connection to the comics, charges up his ring, and flies off (courtesy of some so-so wire work) without ever suiting up.

Netflix's Daredevil made us wait until the finale's final act to see the Man Without Fear in his red suit—that took thirteen episodes, as a reminder—but Lanterns can't even give fans that much. Next summer's Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will likely introduce John as a true, albeit unofficial, Green Lantern, but that doesn't help us now, does it? And it certainly doesn't help Lanterns.

We've already waxed lyrical about the lack of constructs in the HBO series. Put it down to a low budget or the creative team feeling that the whole concept is just too lame for a "prestige" drama, but perhaps we shouldn't be shocked that Lanterns dropped the ball on giving John the chance to shine as a superhero in the finale. After all, the series had already devoted a lot of time to establishing how superior in every way to Hal he is.

The problem isn't simply that fans didn't get to see John Stewart in his full Green Lantern costume, or that he didn't spend the finale throwing around elaborate constructs. It's that DC chose to tell a Green Lantern story while seemingly being embarrassed by the very thing that makes these stories distinctive.

There's nothing inherently wrong with taking a slower approach to a superhero's origin. Lanterns could have spent seven episodes establishing John as a person, exploring his relationship with Hal, and grounding the mythology in a murder mystery before delivering the superhero payoff we've been waiting for. Instead, it spent almost eight hours circling the idea of John becoming a Green Lantern.

Man of Tomorrow can make that right next July, though Gunn will need to find room to do so in a movie that's already jam-packed with characters.

To borrow Florence's analogy, Lanterns gave us eight hours of explaining why Surf Dracula might eventually surf, only to hand him the board when there was barely any time left to actually do it. DC didn't need to rush John Stewart into becoming Green Lantern. But after spending an entire season getting there, it absolutely needed to let him be one.

Only Superman is preventing the DCFU V2 leaking lifeboat that Gunn is paddling from sinking.

@ObserverIO -

The fact that it was just mediocre was very disappointing. All the ridiculous side characters were just too much. Plus, they did perfect casting for Lois Lane and didn't hardly use her at all.

Weak superman was pretty unimpressive.

Seeing as how he's not affiliated with the Corps, what are we supposed to call him? Just John? Sentinel? Tomb Raider?

Lets just be real...we was optimistic about Gunns Superman...it was disappointing. The forced comedy, the weird sexual innuendos, Superman not being the hero in his own film. The bad costumes, the bad script, The Viltramite heritage, the goofy ass Ma & Pa Kent. Do I expect Man Of Tomorrow to be better? Maybe BUT after EVERYTHING I have seen from Gunns DCU I'll Pass!! DC is DOOMED under this leadership.

@ClarkJoeKent - What are you talking about here? His Superman movie was easily the best since the second Donner movie released over 40 years ago.

What MOS did to Lois Lane and the Kents is a far bigger affront to the character of Superman than anything Gunn did.

@Awest66 - lol😂😂😂 Youre funny. Kevin Costner was the best Pa Kent on film...to say that goofy as Pa Kent from Gunns Superman was better.who had 2 lines & lived in a trailer 😂😂😂 Diane Lane also did a stellar job as Ma Kent on film. MOS was an Epic, Cinematic film & I ONLY watched it AFTER I watched Gunns Superman. I was talk shit like you guys. Regurgitating the bull shit I was reading on this site. Then I watched Man Of Steel on HBO after watching Gunns Superman....NO COMPARISON! MOS had a better costumes, cast, script, theme music, cinematographer, CGI....Im sorry cant watch Superman cry & get kicked in the balls & not be the hero in his own film named Superman! At least in MOS he was the HERO & saved EVERYONE & didn't cry & complain. Lois was a reporter in MOS in Gunns Superman Lois beat Lex not Superman 😂😂😂😂

@ClarkJoeKent - Kevin Costner was the worst Pa Kent, He literally told Clark that letting a bus full of children die might have been the right call.

Absolutely disagree on everything else too. Superman 25 easily surpasses Man of Steel in literally everything. The costumes are better, the cast is way better, the writing is easily better (Watch MOS again, The dialogue is almost entirely exposition). It's also a much better looking film without that ugly ass blue/gray filter that Snyder uses on every one of his movies. It's music actually sounds like Superman-feeling music instead of MOS"s generic action trailer music.

Superman worked to save everyone in the Gunn movie, even a squirrel. In MOS, Superman literally threw Zod into a populated area.

Lois Lane was absolutely perfect in Gunns Superman, MOS portrayed her as a mousy, soft-spoken redhead.

@JoshWilding - you do realize in the comics not all green lanterns have the same oath correct?
I’m not a huge fan of the oath they choose to use but I wouldn’t say it’s out of the ordinary for a lantern with his own oath. Especially considering how the show depicted his character and how he got to this point.
I think everyone understands at this point you’re not a fan lol

I am not a fan of the finale but the show was not just a action film...it was also a mystery and that is what they focused on for the ending of the show. Solving that mystery.

Episode 5 had the action elements and felt like a finale. The subsequent episodes were the aftermath.
