VAL ZOD: Michael B. Jordan's SUPERMAN Project Lands TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS Writers

We got confirmation this summer that Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan is developing a Superman TV series for the HBO Max streaming service via his Outlier Society production company, and the project now has a writing team - as well as an official title!

According to Deadline, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts scribes Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters have been tapped to pen the show, which is now known as Val Zod. This is not exactly a major surprise since it's previously been revealed that the story will focus on Earth 2's version of the Man of Steel, though this adaptation appears to have dropped the hyphen from the character's name.

There's been some speculation that Jordan may also suit-up as the title hero, but it sounds like that's far from set in stone. For now, the actor/director is only confirmed to be on board as an executive producer alongside Elizabeth Raposo and Stefano Agosto.

Val Zod is a completely separate project to the feature that's currently in the works from Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams, which is expected to focus on a Black incarnation of Kal-El in a period setting.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Wonder if he'll be the Superman to Robert Pattinson's Batman.

@Battabingg - Id actually be really down for that but I think Battinson is going to be its own universe akin to the Nolanverse. Matt Reeves seems to want to have it be his own thing from the ground up with this Batman series and it seems to have been the right choice imo

@Battabingg - I wouldn't be against it, but I also like the idea there are no other heroes in this world aside from Batman people.

@ElricReturns - it could be the val-zod much more grounded like the man of steel's vibe but with fiction style...maybe

@Ha1frican - Yeah, I'm expecting Flashpoint to either fix a lot...and I mean a lot, or that everything will be self-contained for the foreseeable future with no league.

@ElricReturns - Except he's probably not the only superhero in his world. We've seen the pics of people dressed as Superman and Wonder Woman on the set of The Batman.

Well that’s the weird thing about all of this. Everyone assumed because Coates is writing the new Superman film that it will be a African American version but nothing in any of the interviews with him had him say outright that it will be. People are just assuming that it will be because it’s Coates writing it. Just seems strange to have 2 projects with perhaps the same theme.

@John75 - yeah it's a lot of assuming. I'm kinda assuming MBJ is gonna suit up, but if he does I think Calvin Ellis fits him better. Think Val Zod works too though

@John75 - Michael b Jordan stated that he was attached to that movie but left when they pushed for a black Clark Kent instead of val zod.

@John75 - Well that's kind of his thing I cant imagine why you'd hire him over anyone else if you weren't attempting to do Clark as a black man. On the topic of it seeming strange remember... WB does things that make no sense all the time.

@Origame - So black Clark would be...

No ones ever figuring out that secret identity.

Still think it would've made more sense for Coates and Abrams to make the Val-Zod movie, and MBJ to make a Calvin Ellis story. Think MBJ can make it work with Val-Zod too though. Just don't know what to expect of the other two (no Cavill atleast, that's for sure)

This just makes me wanna see a live action Icon movie

@BlackBeltJones - didn't even know about icon until people kept saying he'd make a good film in place of a black superman movie. And now I just really wanna see that movie.

It's what bugs me about much of the push for diversity lately. One of the great things about diversity is the new stories you'd get from it. But race swapping isn't giving us that. We're not getting anything new with a black superman. Or at least nothing that can't be done with a white superman. And there are so many great black superheroes out there (plenty from black creators too) who will never end up in the public eye with this attitude.
