In an interview with Geoff Boucher of The Los Angeles Times: Hero Complex, the director of the next Superman movie revealed that his two all time favourite Superman artists are Jim Lee and Curt Swan. Check out what he had to say below, and be sure to follow the link at the bottom of the article for more.

"There are so many interpetations, so many artists. It’s funny, I have that stamp image — it’s him tearing open his jacket. Its got a retro vibe to it, it’s cool. That’s the background on my iPad. It’s Curt Swan and the way he draws that jawline, it is like Mt. Rushmore, totally, or like ‘The Incredibles.’ Swan is really good."

"My taste level goes to the more, I guess, muscular Superman. The bigger, more muscular Superman, the way Jim draws him. Those tend to be the artists I like in comics. So Jim’s Superman, for sure. That’s not to say that’s how the movie will be, of course, but as far as the comics. It’s an interesting thing to think about though. There have just been so many incarnations and so many great ones. As a fan you don’t really to have to pick, you can enjoy them all."

I know he's quick to point out that this wont necessarily effect what we see in the movie, but I for one think it would be great to see a Jim Lee inspired Superman when the movie is released in the Winter of 2012! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Lee

vs.

Swan

Swan is much more old school-like...well, that is old anyhow. :)

Jim Lee's rendition of just about every character he draws is always one of the best there is. His Batman is great. His Superman is great. HE'S great.

This increases are chances of seeing a CGI beef up for Superman because apparently he's a fan of the muscular Superman.

@SirPrize
Byrne rocks!
Although he is hugely talented I personally find Jim Lee's characters too bulky and out of proportion. His stuff works more for Supes than his Batman though.
Swan and the old school paved the way for all we have now and I love the simplicity.Helps to focus you on the stories rather than just staring at the art.
They're all awesome to be fair :)
Liking the fact that Snyder likes a bigger supes.Very promising...

@Intruder: I don't like the way Lee draws Batman he doesn't get the chin right. Which really bothers me because the chin should be the most distinguishable physical feature of Batman other than his costume, since it's one off the facial features not covered by a mask. The guy's talented but he can't draw Batman.

Jim Lee is great but I'm sick of his style. All his male characters look the same. Same square jaw and nose, just a different costume. IMO.

John Byrne is by far the #1 comics creator thats not named Stan or Jack.
Alex Ross would be the #1 artist. Only thing Jim Lee is, is the #1 most over-rated artist, with Rob Liefeld coming in a close 2nd.

was worried i might see McGuiness name up there.

IMHO I don't really dig the big/body builder type Superman. He's a farmboy he shouldn't look like he belongs in the WCW

More like Jim Lee was the only decent X-Men artist of the 90's.

No Liefeld is the most over-rated artist next to Jim Lee not better.
Never said Lee was a bad artist, just not as good or creative as everyone tries to make him out to be.

Soooo happy Zack Snyder is a TRUE Superman fan. Bryan Singer admitted back in 2006 that he had NEVER read a single Superman comic book in his entire life. And it showed in his stupid Superman-Returns crap film. Snyder being a REAL fan at least having read the comics and all- gives me and i'm sure the rest of us here a better and more comfortable feeling about his take on Superman.

In Snyder we trust!

That first one is the great Neal Adams. He was one of the pioneers to change "kiddie books" into the art form that is respected today. Swan's work is even earlier than this and is one of influances for Adams.
