It appears that Amazon is intent on building a massive library of fantasy TV shows. Deadline Hollywood reports that the studio has bought the rights to author Rebecca Yarros' on-going The Empyrean fantasy saga, with plans to make yet another fantasy TV series- joining the likes of The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power.

Outlier Society, Michael B. Jordan's production company, is now working on an adaptation of the first installment of the series, Fourth Wing.

Michael B. Jordan and Outlier Society signed a first-look deal with Amazon back in February 2021 and previously released the Tom Clancy adaptation, Without Remorse.

Fourth Wing was published in April 2023 and quickly gained traction to currently rank #7 on Amazon's list of best sellers. The second entry in the series, Iron Flame, currently ranks #3 and is set to be published on November 7.

The blurb on the book's dust cover reads, "Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general―also known as her tough-as-talons mother―has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.  But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them."

"With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter―like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise."

"Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda―because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die."

Although Jordan is serving as executive producer, it is unknown at this time if he will be starring in the adaptation.

There are presently three more confirmed entries in The Empyrean saga scheduled for publication, after Iron Flame.

Fourth Wing was previously named Barnes & Noble and Indigo Best Book of 2023. The book rose to prominence on Tik Tok where its associated hashtags have generated over a billion views worldwide.

Yarros will serve as a non-writing executive producer on the show, alongside her publisher, Liz Pelletier.

Sounds generic

@McMurdo - I haven't read it but it's apparently the hottest new fantasy series at the moment albeit, it sounds like a mix of Harry Potter and Games of Thrones.

@McMurdo - my thoughts as well. Unless that secret that is mentioned in the premise is unique, I don't think they can sell me on this

Pretty impressive to publish two books this year and already be inducted in Amazon's hall of fantasy shows. Guess the premise helps, as it sounds made for larger audiences (i.e. generic).

Also, is that thumbnail official or just an (also generic looking) AI image?

Might sound good if I weren't so old and jaded.

Sounds like yet another Dragonrider based fantasy book series backdropped on war/faction intrigue.

That's been done multiple times. It better be pretty great to get traction with veteran adult science fantasy readers.

@DocSpock - with the second book out 6ish months after the first I’m guessing the quality is pretty bad and the content pretty generic. YA fantasy is the most generic and bland genre in existence right now. Even worse than romance.

Im up for anything. Life is too short to complain and critique about every little thing that does not level up to your expectations. Computer graphics have come a long way. Technology has come a long way. Let The Empyrean Saga begin!!!

Hopefully it’s better than Rings of Power

With all of this carrion circling on established fantasy IP, how nobody has managed to secure ‘Dragonlance’ is absolutely beyond me.

Thing is literally 2nd greatest fantasy world-building series behind Tolkien and has enough source material to fund multiple shows and/or seasons

So more YA revival fever?

@Deklipz -

I'm gonna treat this like my first marriage. I'm gonna snarf cookies & tequila until I forget about the whole thing.

@DocSpock - At 2+ books a year I’m pretty sure that’s how the author and ‘publisher’ are getting through it as well.

@Deklipz -

I should have known when I saw the author's name was really the pen name of Napolean Dynamite.

Pedro for President!

@DocSpock - It's like Amazon is trying to troll fantasy fans by spending billions on trash to negatively affect the market for them, so that eventually Amazon can buy the rights to pretty much everything actually worthwhile in the genre for stupid cheap.

While cynical, that sounds plausible.

I haven’t read the book, but fans can look forward to Amazon butchering this like they did Rings of Power and Wheel of Time.

I really want Dragonriders of Pern but more dragons is always a plus to me.

@Godzilla2000Zer - I would literally start sacrificing virgins for a solid Pern series.
