New footage from The Mummy: Book of the Dead's set (via SFFGazette.com) reveals a first look at John Hannah's returning Jonathan Carnahan alongside Obsession star Michael Johnston, who makes his franchise debut in this fourth chapter.

Johnston's mystery character is wearing glasses and looks pretty buttoned up, but there's still no clear indication of who he's playing.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz's Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan joined them, suggesting this foursome will be front and centre in The Mummy: Book of the Dead as they tackle yet another threat from Ancient Egypt.

Later, Fraser and Johnston get to see some action, as we head to Morocco for a thrilling scene in which a group of men seemingly kidnap Evelyn during an intense car chase. Johnston's character appears to be trying to smash his way into the car, while Rick perilously hangs on to the hood.

Despite several rounds of set photos, we're still waiting for an official first look at the fourth instalment of The Mummy. That could head our way before the end of the year, though plot details are also under lock and key for now.

The Mummy franchise first launched in 1999. It introduced moviegoers to Fraser's Rick O'Connell and Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan, and following their clash with the resurrected Imhotep, the duo returned in 2001's The Mummy Returns, which introduced Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Scorpion King.

In 2002, that character was front and centre in his own ill-fated spin-off, before the franchise rose from the dead in 2008 with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That didn't receive the warmest response, and is no longer being treated as canon (meaning it will be ignored when this fourth chapter arrives).

"Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience," Fraser previously said of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. "I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot."

"The one I wanted to make is forthcoming," the Oscar winner continued. "And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want."

Starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O'Connor, Michael Johnston, and Numan Acar, The Mummy: Book of the Dead is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence.

David Coggeshall (The Family Plan, Orphan: First Kill) wrote the screenplay for this next instalment of the franchise, with Sean Daniel returning as a producer. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein will produce through Project X Entertainment, and they're frequent collaborators with the movie's directors Radio Silence.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead arrives in theaters on October 15, 2027.

I loved the first movie, not so much the others.

Fingers crossed. I'm pulling for Fraser big time. The movie With Honors is one of our favorites from the past.
