THE WHEEL OF TIME Fantasy Adventure Adaptation Gets A Series Order At Amazon

It's been a while since we had any updated on this, but we now have official confirmation that Robert Jordan's sprawling series of fantasy novels are to be adapted for the small screen at Amazon...

The last update we had on The Wheel of Time's journey to the screen was back in 2016 when Robert Jordan's widow Harriet McDougal announced that the rights issue with Red Eagle Entertainment had been resolved, and her late husband's fantasy epic would soon become "a cutting edge TV series from a major studio."

Well, we had to wait a bit longer than expected, but Amazon has now announced that The Wheel of Time has been ordered to series and they've also shared a first synopsis to give non-fans an idea of what to expect:

The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Meaning that in this series — women hold the keys to power. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women.

Moiraine’s interested in these five because she believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

It sounds like the show will be taking a few liberties with the source material, but nothing too major.

Survivor contestant-turned-TV writer Rafe Judkins will serve as showrunner and executive producer on The Wheel of Time, which doesn't have a premiere date yet.

I let my Amazon membership lapse until I hear more about the LOTR show... although I know nothing about it, this looks similar in scope in epicness. Could be a good indication of what kind of quality is to come.

They'd have do some serious trimming, the books really drag for a while, but excited to see this happen.

@Prork - Can you recommend any books or parts of them to skip? Just finished book 3.

@GratefulBat - It's not really possible to skip any of them, but when you get a bit later on in the series when the pace slows down, keep at it, it does get better.

Hell yes! Pumped for this one. Just finished book 3, now I just need to knock down the other 11...

@GratefulBat - You're in the good stuff. Books 1-6 are good. Then Jordan's pacing gets terrible and 7-10 are a drag with 11 being a little better. Then Sanderson takes over the series and the last 3 books are good again.

@MrDandy - Ok cool. Thanks for the good info. Will just skim the boring ones.

@GratefulBat - You really can't skip books. Just slog through. You miss FAR too much context by skipping books. But in the end, you will find it quite "meh".

Hmm... interesting. I haven't heard of it, but the plot sounds like something that could be worth exploring.

@GratefulBat - you can skim through the descriptions of outfits and the pacing issue that is being referred to is later in the series. Without giving too much away there is a book that's basically dedicated to the bureaucracy of the family houses of Andor and the drama that is between them. that gets real boring, real quick, but at the same time is a little necessary to understand key plot points. Yawn. that being said I ADORE this story. One of my favs

My wife loves these books. I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but she should be excited for the show.
Me? I'm still waiting on more concrete news concerning Amazon's Conan the Barbarian series.

The Dragon Reborn, Lews Therin Telamon you crazy bastard family killer. I think GOT was inspired by Wheel of Time.

Who is she? I only read the first book - cool ideas, just not a fan of Jordan's writing style - just my opinion, don't flame.

My point... I surfed for the "lead" character and have no idea who she is - these were the main six I found: Rand al’Thor, Perrin Aybara, Matrim Cauthon, Egwene al’Vere, Nynaeve al’Meara, and Elayne Trakand....

Deagle - 10/2/2018, 12:57 PM
@FracBrain - Moiraine Damodred is the one who finds Rand who is the Dragon Reborn. She is a pretty epic Aes Sedai (wizard) character. This is who they are probably talking about since she and her warder find all the boys when they get attacked by the monsters beyond the spine of the world.

Story is pretty good and I'm pretty sure GRR Martin wrote Game of Thrones with a world setting influenced by the Wheel of Time since those books came out years before GOT. I really hate the main character Rand, I just don't like the way he was written, instead of a hero type character, I felt he was just a plan over powered A hole most of the time. Plus no real love interest, he like macs on all the main women in the books and never settles down and its just kind of weird. We'll I'll give it a chance, still have to read the new books that were written since Jordan died before he finished the series.

@Deagle - Rand does not "Mac" on all the main women.. did you skim or something? I can relate to you opinion about how he was written but "macking" on all the main women.. no. False. Was he a young boy with an early crush.. he grew out of: yes... GOT thrones was also based on something else entirely.. look it up pretty well documented.
Deagle
Deagle - 10/2/2018, 2:12 PM
@TolstoyT - Sorry he slept with many of the women and had a few kids by different women. He was so naive about sleeping with one of them, he thought he raped one of them, the body guard girl (forgot her name) if I recall.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 10/2/2018, 2:38 PM
@Deagle - I'm currently reading the book series and you're talking about Aviendha and he didn't think he raped her, he thought he took advantage of her because he was promised to someone else. And of course he was niave because he lost his virginity in that scene.

Also he only sleeps with three women in the series Aviendha, Elayne, and Min who he is in a polygamous relationship with all three as is the norm of the Aiel culture.
Deagle
Deagle - 10/2/2018, 5:46 PM
@MrDandy - See no real love story, they all just fall in love with him out of the blue and he can't choose one. Princess Elayne was down right annoying, Min and Aviendha were pretty good. Egwene was his first love interest in the first book where they were suppose to get married and in the second book they like break it off for no real reason and say they're more like brother and sister so he can go off with these other women. Egwene turned out be pretty cool herself but Rand was just a tool for most of the series.
TolstoyT
TolstoyT - 10/3/2018, 7:06 AM
@Deagle - I think you missed the whole Aiel Culture thing.. and.. he was a virgin for most of the book and in fact pretty innocent when it came to women. Your accounting makes it sound like he is some kind of predator.. which is crazy. You don't like his character (which is up to you) but slow your roll on that BS. The women in the books are very strong characters, so much so that Jordan has been criticized for just how strong.. there was no Macking or Raping of these characters. Your interpretation of Egween and Rand is also odd as I think its pretty clearly illustrated that they both agreed they outgrew each other.

Magic exists in this world but only women can use it? Bahahaha, can they play sports in this fantasy land as well?
PeaceMaker1
PeaceMaker1 - 10/2/2018, 4:02 PM
@CaptainMexico - Lmao that was funny! Actually men can use magic to but it makes them go crazy over time and they start killing everybody. The main character spends most of the books fighting back the crazy.

TolstoyT

@Supafairy - I think you will enjoy it. I hope they stick to the source material fairly closely for the TV series and its not just a cash grab. If so it will be a fun series with many seasons already written for them.
Game of thrones was actually quite a bit different in tone than this.. other than it being fantasy I'm not sure why people are comparing the two... I mean WOT series has been republished and dropped in the Teen Book Section .. ie its pretty clean ... I could not imagine that happening with Game of Thrones.
Supafairy
Supafairy - 10/3/2018, 8:39 AM
@TolstoyT - I like it so far. I think the comparison to GoT is in terms of world building and intrigue. I love the SOAIF series so was looking for something similar. I finally decided to try this. Guess it's probably more comparable to LOTR.
