While Doctor Who has a loyal, undeniably passionate fanbase, it doesn't seem too harsh to say that BBC's budget for the series has held it back to some extent. Now, with Disney+ getting involved, as much as triple is expected to be spent on the show from season to season, giving the franchise its best chance yet to break into the mainstream.
As filming on the next season gets underway in Cardiff, Wales, some new stills have been released (via SFFGazette.com) showcasing Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor And Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday.
They both look fantastic, and very stylish, and it definitely feels like Russell T Davies, BBC, and Disney+ are doing what they can to make Doctor Who feel more like big-budget event TV. Gatwa already has his fair share of fans after starring in Sex Education, while Gibson stands a chance of hitting the big time with this show after her role in British soap Coronation Street.
Davies recently talked about casting the relative unknown in Doctor Who, saying: "It's the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already."
"She's brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor," he continued. "As a 'Coronation Street' fan, I've seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that's nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday."
New episodes of Doctor Who will return to screens in November 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary. David Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor for three specials next year, before Gatwa takes over the role as the Fifteenth Doctor.
