SEPARATED - With Freeland under full-blown occupation, the Pierce family gets pulled in different directions. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Black Lightning features:
Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning
China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce
Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce/Thunder
Christine Adams as Lynn Pierce
Marvin "Krondon" Jones III as Tobias Whale
Damon Gupton as Inspector William Henderson

I was a bit apprehensive going into this season, wasn't expecting much after season 2 which was a massive stepdown from season 1. And man were my concerns for season 3, for the time being, eased and put to rest! This was a good episode and a good start to the season.

First, man oh man, Nafessa Williams... definitely the visual highlight of the episode, yeah you guys know the couple scenes I'm talking about...
The action was good, the storylines were good and had my attention. I really like the idea that Jefferson has unlocked an ability with the tests he's been under.
Odell's master grand plan wasn't what I was expecting and now makes for a really exciting rest of the season, at least for an overarching villain. Seems the Markovian War is just a farce to provide the cover to weaponize greenlight kids. Should be very interesting to see this play out going forward.
Jennifer's race identity switching gizmo was neat but also kind of funny on the other hand.
And my man Lala is back :-)

Very nice start to the season, this episode felt like a return to form after a lackluster second season. Hopefully they can keep this up going forward.

@HeavyMetal4Life - is it possible for me to skip season 2 and jump to 3 or I NEED to know season 2 plot?

@MrCamw1 - yeah, there are a handful of important/necessary things to see in season 2, and as much as I disliked season 2, it actually sets up season 3 a lot. You'd be pretty lost going into season 3.

Per the trailer above, looks like episode 2 will be just as good as tonight's premiere.

They must have inspired themselves from the events in real life regarding the isolation camps to come up with these ASA facilities because it's a literal parallel. Pod kids and anyone else, child or adult, suspected to have powers from Green Light are held captive in those.

What did took me by surprise wasn't that Jefferson made that sacrifice trade in exchange for his daughters but he was actually put inside the same metahuman prison that Tobias is in, The Pit. Right now he isn't aware nor is giving it too much thought but this has the potential for Tobias to realize that he is Black Lightning which was something he was already wondering about last Season.

Maybe they will help each other to break out along with the other metas.

His new organic "x-ray" vision ability he's developed is neat. Maybe it will be further improved when he suits up.

That Carson Williams Col. screams trouble with his mimic ability. I think Anissa was lucky she just got K.O. by a bazooka in the end because going up against that guy to me sounds way more dangerous.

I don't think exactly the Markovian War is a ruse just because Odell's real plans became clear by accident during Tobias' interrogation, because we did see that meta called Instant from last Season take with him the other doctor that knew how to treat the metas of Freeland to Markovia. More like it exposed what are his and the gov. intentions with the metas first and foremost.

RIP Issa.

The news reporter that hooked up with Anissa could have just got closer to her to expose her out as Blackbird.

I hope Jennifer gets more to do next week.
