"James Gunn Lied Again": DC Fans Fume Over Resurfaced False Promises About Lanterns From 2023

James Gunn is coming under fire from fans on social media who have realised that the version of Lanterns he promised at the start of 2023 has little to nothing in common with the finished product.

"This is the story of a couple of Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan. And we have a few other Lanterns peppered in there, but this is really a terrestrial-based TV show which is almost like True Detective, with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over precinct Earth. In it, they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our larger story of the DCU."

That's how DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn sold Lanterns when the DCU's "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" was announced at the start of 2023. It's normal for a movie or TV show to change through the development process, of course, but the version of this series that recently wrapped up on HBO has little to nothing in common with this ambitious pitch from the Superman director.

There was no terrifying mystery, and nothing that obviously tied into the wider DCU...unless the plan is for Noah to be the franchise's big bad in an eventual Justice League movie. Somehow, we doubt it.

Crucially, while Lanterns did take its cues from True Detective, Hal Jordan and John Stewart were not "space cops watching over precinct Earth." It seems Gunn's idea was to have the two veteran members of the Green Lantern Corps come to Earth to investigate a murder together, with "a few other Lanterns peppered in."

Lanterns doesn't feature appearances from any other member of the Corps (well, outside of an emasculated Guy Gardner), and beyond Sinestro, there aren't even any aliens in the show who look remotely different from regular humans.

Gunn has lied before—look at his review of The Flash, "one of the greatest movies ever made"—but it's hard not to wonder whether HBO's influence derailed what was meant to be the take on Green Lantern fans were hoping for.

Perhaps Gunn was swayed by the creative team he enlisted (Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King) to transform Lanterns from the series he envisioned nearly four years ago into a show heavy on identity politics that, for some reason, tore Hal down just to build John up. At the very least, we'd like to think he's learned something about hiring people who appear to hate the comics these stories are based on.

Interestingly, it wasn't that long ago Gunn said key ideas from Peacemaker Season 2 like Checkmate and Salvation were "very connected" to Lanterns. That leaves us to conclude he's either deluded, a complete bullsh*tter, or unable to follow through on his word upon realising that creating a shared world isn't as easy as Kevin Feige makes it look.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

If Grandma-nhunter was on earth for 30 years, shouldn't we assume that it was forcibly impregnating hundreds if not thousands of other women in order to infiltrate and destroy the human species?

John letting that genocidal AI go free could easily end all life on earth.

Hopefully he's able to inspire enough fear to save the day!

Lanterns doesn’t feature any other lantern from the Corps.

Poor Guy Gardner. Although admittedly, how he was treated by this script was probably my biggest gripe with the show. He looked scared of Jon all the time. It’s literally the only thing he shouldn’t be.

@Cass - I don’t think it was all the time though perhaps the last time we see him…

However I can understand why he doesn’t start a fight since he’s all about optics and having 2 Lanterns fight each other in a town that already despises them wouldn’t be good for that.

We get it, Josh doesn't like Lanterns - or the DCU at large. That's totally fair. But, none of this was actually lies. Hal is very much a space cop. John was intended to become one. As for other Lanterns, peppered in - yes, we got not only Sinestro, but also Guy Gardner. That counts. There were others who also got a mention. The True Detective comparison is pretty accurate too. As for the "Salvation and checkmate" claim, well, They did have doorways to other realms (tenuous connection, granted) which also played into Superman as well and we'll have to see what comes from MOT.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with his assessment of The Flash, who's to say whether or not he actually felt that way. It's subjective. So, go ahead and question his taste or judgement, but who's to say he was lying?

I'm not apologizing for Gunn, in any way, he's made many a questionable decision in my opinion.

@Patient2670 - This is basically what I came to post. I think it was as disconnected as Watchmen, and these are probably the best two DC series, while I did enjoy Peacemaker.

@Patient2670 - I don't think they were lies, he just said a bunch of stuff that got people's hopes up and none of it really came to frution. Mentioning lanterns doesn't do anything for anyone to be honest, we were expecting to see Green Lanterns in space that weren't humans. Also, this mystery doesn't appear to tie into the DCU in any meaningful way as of yet so that was a letdown as well.

Fuming? lol..a quote made in 2023, probably even before the final script/storey was probably created, shouldn't be taken as literal. Stories, plot, characters, script etc. can be alternated right before filming or while filming.

I enjoyed Lanterns. Was a good storey told where it showed the progression of Stewart breaking from the ranks. Also has potential to link to the larger DCU i.e cosmic entities, Kaine from Gotham, hero established on Earth, black hole portals etc.

As was said above, "a few other Lanterns peppered in." may have meant to you that we were going to see Abin-Sur, Kilowog, and Jessica Cruz, but we got Guy Gardner and Sinestro, who WAS a Lantern. So maybe a "few" made you think we would see "more", but we got additional Lanterns, so not at all a lie.

But dude, if you have such a hate boner for the DCU, I have a remedy. Just don't watch it. If you never post another single article on this site about a DC property, you would still have more than enough content to meet your quota, and I can promise you, not a single visitor to this site would notice.

imo what was a green lantern show needed so desperately to be instead a Batman tv show but some "genius" at the WB thinks Batman has no value on live action tv and only film and I'm like how do you know that?, the batman show from the 1960s is one of the most beloved shows and if you did a tv-ma Batman with the true detective theme it would probably be a hit. I theorize there is rights issues preventing a Batman live action show cause ironically you can show Bruce Wayne but not Batman other than a brief glimpse.

green lantern tv show should take place in outer space and be akin to star wars but the problem is im convinced the tv budget simply cannot afford what is shown in the comics therefore its more equipped for movies but another problem then occurs cause the movie with Ryan bombed so maybe its best for animation or just don't do one at all.
