"James Gunn Lied Again": DC Fans Fume Over Resurfaced False Promises About Lanterns From 2023

James Gunn is coming under fire from fans on social media who have realised that the version of Lanterns he promised at the start of 2023 has little to nothing in common with the finished product.

"This is the story of a couple of Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan. And we have a few other Lanterns peppered in there, but this is really a terrestrial-based TV show which is almost like True Detective, with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over precinct Earth. In it, they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our larger story of the DCU."

That's how DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn sold Lanterns when the DCU's "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" was announced at the start of 2023. It's normal for a movie or TV show to change through the development process, of course, but the version of this series that recently wrapped up on HBO has little to nothing in common with this ambitious pitch from the Superman director.

There was no terrifying mystery, and nothing that obviously tied into the wider DCU...unless the plan is for Noah to be the franchise's big bad in an eventual Justice League movie. Somehow, we doubt it.

Crucially, while Lanterns did take its cues from True Detective, Hal Jordan and John Stewart were not "space cops watching over precinct Earth." It seems Gunn's idea was to have the two veteran members of the Green Lantern Corps come to Earth to investigate a murder together, with "a few other Lanterns peppered in."

Lanterns doesn't feature appearances from any other member of the Corps (well, outside of an emasculated Guy Gardner), and beyond Sinestro, there aren't even any aliens in the show who look remotely different from regular humans.

Gunn has lied before—look at his review of The Flash, "one of the greatest movies ever made"—but it's hard not to wonder whether HBO's influence derailed what was meant to be the take on Green Lantern fans were hoping for.

Perhaps Gunn was swayed by the creative team he enlisted (Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King) to transform Lanterns from the series he envisioned nearly four years ago into a show heavy on identity politics that, for some reason, tore Hal down just to build John up. At the very least, we'd like to think he's learned something about hiring people who appear to hate the comics these stories are based on.

Interestingly, it wasn't that long ago Gunn said key ideas from Peacemaker Season 2 like Checkmate and Salvation were "very connected" to Lanterns. That leaves us to conclude he's either deluded, a complete bullsh*tter, or unable to follow through on his word upon realising that creating a shared world isn't as easy as Kevin Feige makes it look.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

Superman was mediocre. Supergirl, Season 2 Peacemaker, and Lanterns were all pure sh!t.

Pervert Gunn is killing the DCFU V2.

@DocSpock - I saw someone on some forum saying that superman was this universally acclaimed movie and im like where did you hear that from?, the movie made less than man of steel and there are factions of people who still prefer Cavill or reeve over corenswet
DocSpock

@lazloyaegar -

The movie was average. Cavill was perfect for Superman, but the SnyderVerse went in a ditch.

Corenswet could be a good Superman and the Lois casting is perfect. But he wimped out Superman and didn’t use Lois much at all.

Gunn does not have the skills for his DCU overlord position.

“Cavill was perfect for Superman”

Cavill looks like Superman. That’s it. Outside of that he’s incredibly wooden as an actor. His physicality is his crutch.

I love it. He’s going to be here another 10 years saying the same shit, lmao.

And, yeah, Josh is a total bitch and acts baffled when people call him out. The funny thing: when I tried to log back in on my account it said the ban reason was “trolling.” He either has zero self awareness or just can dish but not take the heat.

Either way, he’s a little bitch.

@DocSpock - wb blames poor cavill, affleck, gadot, etc for those movies becoming less popular as if the actors acting out lines are the fault of bad writing, thats the general origin of this reason of a reboot, they think the actors are the problem.

i didnt mind corenswet, my bigger issue is im just mentally drained on the character at this point, im looking forward to him and lex team up but like im mostly done with him and batman at this point, i feel like there isnt enough exciting stuff for them to do anymore.

If Grandma-nhunter was on earth for 30 years, shouldn't we assume that it was forcibly impregnating hundreds if not thousands of other women in order to infiltrate and destroy the human species?

John letting that genocidal AI go free could easily end all life on earth.

Hopefully he's able to inspire enough fear to save the day!

Lanterns doesn’t feature any other lantern from the Corps.

Poor Guy Gardner. Although admittedly, how he was treated by this script was probably my biggest gripe with the show. He looked scared of Jon all the time. It’s literally the only thing he shouldn’t be.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/6/2026, 3:33 PM
@Cass - I don’t think it was all the time though perhaps the last time we see him…

However I can understand why he doesn’t start a fight since he’s all about optics and having 2 Lanterns fight each other in a town that already despises them wouldn’t be good for that.

We get it, Josh doesn't like Lanterns - or the DCU at large. That's totally fair. But, none of this was actually lies. Hal is very much a space cop. John was intended to become one. As for other Lanterns, peppered in - yes, we got not only Sinestro, but also Guy Gardner. That counts. There were others who also got a mention. The True Detective comparison is pretty accurate too. As for the "Salvation and checkmate" claim, well, They did have doorways to other realms (tenuous connection, granted) which also played into Superman as well and we'll have to see what comes from MOT.

While I wholeheartedly disagree with his assessment of The Flash, who's to say whether or not he actually felt that way. It's subjective. So, go ahead and question his taste or judgement, but who's to say he was lying?

I'm not apologizing for Gunn, in any way, he's made many a questionable decision in my opinion.

@Patient2670 - This is basically what I came to post. I think it was as disconnected as Watchmen, and these are probably the best two DC series, while I did enjoy Peacemaker.
ParStorm
ParStorm - 10/6/2026, 3:44 PM
@Patient2670 - I don't think they were lies, he just said a bunch of stuff that got people's hopes up and none of it really came to frution. Mentioning lanterns doesn't do anything for anyone to be honest, we were expecting to see Green Lanterns in space that weren't humans. Also, this mystery doesn't appear to tie into the DCU in any meaningful way as of yet so that was a letdown as well.

@joevseveryone - same! Everyone has their own opinions and I can respect that but the hyperbole and the biases of these DCU posts are out of control. While I don’t agree with all the creative decisions made on this show or the DCU as a whole, this is by far one of the better comic book shows we’ve had in a while.

@ParStorm - I suppose part of his job is to be a hype man. I think one of my favorite parts about Lanterns is that it wasn't what I was expecting. But Chandler and Pierre were both great in an interesting story. Again, by no means perfect, but entertaining.

Fuming? lol..a quote made in 2023, probably even before the final script/storey was probably created, shouldn't be taken as literal. Stories, plot, characters, script etc. can be alternated right before filming or while filming.

I enjoyed Lanterns. Was a good storey told where it showed the progression of Stewart breaking from the ranks. Also has potential to link to the larger DCU i.e cosmic entities, Kaine from Gotham, hero established on Earth, black hole portals etc.

As was said above, "a few other Lanterns peppered in." may have meant to you that we were going to see Abin-Sur, Kilowog, and Jessica Cruz, but we got Guy Gardner and Sinestro, who WAS a Lantern. So maybe a "few" made you think we would see "more", but we got additional Lanterns, so not at all a lie.

But dude, if you have such a hate boner for the DCU, I have a remedy. Just don't watch it. If you never post another single article on this site about a DC property, you would still have more than enough content to meet your quota, and I can promise you, not a single visitor to this site would notice.

imo what was a green lantern show needed so desperately to be instead a Batman tv show but some "genius" at the WB thinks Batman has no value on live action tv and only film and I'm like how do you know that?, the batman show from the 1960s is one of the most beloved shows and if you did a tv-ma Batman with the true detective theme it would probably be a hit. I theorize there is rights issues preventing a Batman live action show cause ironically you can show Bruce Wayne but not Batman other than a brief glimpse.

green lantern tv show should take place in outer space and be akin to star wars but the problem is im convinced the tv budget simply cannot afford what is shown in the comics therefore its more equipped for movies but another problem then occurs cause the movie with Ryan bombed so maybe its best for animation or just don't do one at all.

Jesus [frick]ing Christ…

I guess Josh really can’t be objective as a [frick]ing journalist (since he lives to call himself that) and insert his opinions about the DCU or Gunn into an article then this site really has truly hit the bottom of the drain that it was already circling.

Oh and Gunn never said Checkmate and Salvation would be connected to Lanterns and this is what he actually said….

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐈 𝐬𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐂 [𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬], 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

So he doesn’t say we would get those stuff in Lanterns but that it’s very connected to it which it might be since we famously know they have a 10 year plan or so (let’s not forget those ball portal things we got in the show huh?).

I do think in hindsight it was a mistake to release that slate video but that’s something even Marvel & Star Wars have learned since they know we are in a very unstable period of time in the film industry where projects may not happen so best to not announce them until you are atleast fairly certain that they will…

Plus we had Mundy & Lindelof join King on the show in 2024 so it’s possible certain things were changed such as making it more standalone like any other project that is in development

We can debate all day whether the showrunners hated the comics (no , they didn’t) or tore Hal down to raise up John (maybe but not the extent you think) but you going after Gunn like this makes you the very internet troll you seemingly speak out against…

But then again why should I expect people to give grace to Gunn who is still new to being a studio head whilst being a creative too when those same people haven’t given Feige grace during the Multiverse Saga and its various struggles (caused mainly due to external reasons) after he gave us the likes of EG and a truly legendary achievement in filmmaking with the initial Infinity Saga huh?.
