Lanterns Episode 4 Stills Reunite Hal Jordan And John Stewart In 2016 As Lianna Returns

The first stills from Lanterns episode 4 have been released, and they feature new looks at Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and the mysterious Guardian of the Universe in her human guise, Lianna.

HBO and DC Studios have released the first stills from this Sunday's episode of Lanterns. Following the shocking revelations in last weekend's third chapter, we return to 2016 alongside Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

Of course, their relationship is no longer what it seemed, as John knows his training is a mere formality. Hal's ring is rightfully his, and when the time is right, the Guardians of the Universe will make him the new Green Lantern.

Still, we saw John shed a tear over Hal when he found his body in 2026. Seeing as Guy Gardner seemingly wields the ring in his place, something must lead to him refusing to take the mantle from his reluctant mentor.

Back to the Guardians, and these stills also feature more of Lianna. Her name has led to a lot of speculation among fans, especially as her comic book counterpart is a former member of the Guardians of the Universe and an enemy of Kyle Rayner who later joined the Omega Men.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Lanterns writer Vanessa Baden-Kelly addressed the changes to John Stewart's origin story and the notion that he was raised to become Sector 2814's Green Lantern.

"When we're thinking about Green Lantern lore, we're not only thinking about being fearless, but about what the Lanterns say: feeling fear and having the willpower to overcome it. I think for John Sr., the fear of leaving his family and his wife and everything that they worked so hard for was not overcomeable. For anybody who loves their children and who loves the people around them, the very last thing they would ever do is leave them. So, in some ways, it's that very thing that makes John Sr. one of the bravest characters in our show."

"Obviously, the Stewarts [may be] the people who are able to raise the next great Green Lantern [due to] the fact that they do experience fear and know where to put up some boundaries and say, "No, I'm never going to do that because my family means more to me." For us, what we wanted to craft when we were crafting John Stewart is a Green Lantern who is deciding to do things a little bit different because he recognizes that the way the ring picks [people] - what it decides is fear, and what it decides isn't - is actually kind of bull crap."

"Having those emotions, having those things that guide you on what you should and shouldn't do, feeling humanity, and feeling emotions actually makes you more apt for the job than lacking them."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

The first three episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

@FireGunn - This show has been so incredibly well received, that if they were going to reboot the DCU, it would make sense to rebuild it with this show as the foundation.

@Lisa89 - Perhaps Timothy Zahn put it more poignantly:

"I often hear the argument that having major characters die is more realistic than having them always come through unscathed. Of course it is. But I personally don't want my fiction to necessarily be "realistic." I want my fiction to be entertaining. For me, that means watching engaging characters I care about get into and out of dangerous predicaments, working and thinking together in order to defeat the bad guys. While some authors (and readers) like the tension of wondering who will live and who will die, I prefer the tension of seeing how the heroes are going to think or work their ways out of each difficult or impossible situation they find themselves in. If I want realism and the deaths of people I care about, I can turn on the news."

Killing off a character prevents their story from becoming more interesting.

@TheLobster -

1. The writing is arguably the worst part of the show and that's saying something.
2. The only good performance is Kyle Chander's, who's playing the only interesting character of the show. Everyone else is phoning it in and is bland as a piece of wood.
3. The cinematography is pure shit. There's no sauce to this show. I can't name a single memorable shot 3 episodes in. Compare this garbage to The Penguin or Daredevil (Netflix) to see what I'm talking about.
4. Being grounded is exactly why this show sucks ass. Green Lantern isn't a "grounded" property.

@InfinitePunches - it’s one thing to dislike a series for whatever reason but when you’re complaining about race being involved when it’s an episode centered on JOHN STEWART one of the first black comic book characters that played a main role in a big comic book franchise like Green Lantern then idk what to tell you. It’s you being bothered by race which would be dry snitching.

Being black in the 70s/80s was indeed an experience unlike white folks and visa versa. Also; a Green Lantern being black would easily create discussions based on race. They go hand in hand and if that bothers you then turn it off and go watch your endless comic book shows that don’t have race involved.

It’s hilarious to see people on this site claim to not be racist yet they make racist ass comments about homicide rates in Chicago. I’d rather folks just say the quiet part out loud and stop making excuses.
InfinitePunches
InfinitePunches - 9/2/2026, 5:10 PM
@Lisa89 - We also make assumptions about each other.

For instance, Lobby assumes that because I'm not enjoying Lanterns, that means that I believe that white people are biologically superior to all of the other races and that comic book adaptations should never feature non-white heroes.

And I assume about you that because your profile picture is a screenshot from the show 30 Rock (a television show that features several instances of blackface), that you have no problem with people doing blackface.
