Lanterns Fans Respond As HBO Max Shares "Should’ve Asked John’s Mom To Be The Green Lantern" Video

HBO Max has shared a video featuring scenes with John Stewart's mother (Jasmine Cephas Jones) from the latest episode of Lanterns, and it has certainly stirred up the fanbase...

Are John Stewart's parents caring, dedicated individuals who are doing what they believe is best for their son, or selfish sociopaths who willingly put their child in danger because they can't live with the fact that John Sr. was too afraid to claim the ring when the Guardians originally selected him as Earth's Green Lantern before moving on to Hal Jordan?

How you happen to view these characters will obviously vary from person to person, but how the Lanterns creative team is attempting to depict Bernadette and John Stewart Sr. has become a major talking point among viewers.

John Jr (Aaron Pierre) does make it clear to Laura Linney's Guardian that he knows his folks are "crazy" at one point during the most recent episode, but is this really how they are supposed to come across?

Actress Jasmine Cephas Jones certainly doesn't seem to view her character in a negative light.

"She is a Jill of all Trades, just like so many mothers are," she said in a recent interview with The Knockturnal. "To me, when I read this episode, this is a love letter to the unsung hero of the mother. And especially black mothers and making the possible out of the impossible. She is the superhero without the cape. The biggest thing is her deciding to, in that moment, take the power back for her and her family. And in order to do that, she has to make some really, really hard decisions, but we wanted to make sure that she’s not going complete psycho. We still see why she’s doing it and still showing love to her family and her sons. So that was really important as well."

Bernadette may not have gone complete psycho, but there is probably a good reason for the Guardians not choosing her to be a Green Lantern - beyond the ring being sexist, of course.

At any rate, HBO Max seems to be leaning into the discourse with the following video.

Backlash aside, Lanterns is going from strength to strength when it comes to viewership.

According to Variety, episode 3 averaged 10 million viewers globally and 7 million viewers in the U.S. after three days of viewership. This marks a series high for the DC Studios/HBO Max show (the pilot episode has now attracted more than 20 million viewers worldwide), which ranks among the top five series launches in the platform’s history.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

@Magus - hell yeah bro! You tell these losers who are mad that they changed both characters, their origins, beliefs, core beliefs, and the mythology! Who cares if the they took all the character traits away from Hal like heroism and fearlessness to change Johns story to some generational race trauma?

Come on, give me a nice name call now since you and most of you cant mount and argument.

@TemporarilyHere - a fair amount of 70’s GL stuff dealt with social issues such as race so this is a valid interpretation or element to infuse in the story…

Hell , Hal and John’s initial dynamic was fraught and did touch upon race quite a bit.

@TemporarilyHere - even if they read the more modern stuff which is more space opera , one should still as you said educate themselves on the decades long history of the character since they are constantly being reinvented/reinterpreted or added on to in the mythos etc.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - Just curious, How did they take Hal's fearlessness from him? Or, for that matter, his Heroism? Sure, he's kind of a dick, but he's still there doing what others can't or won't. Trying to solve the situation, despite the pushback from just about everyone else.

As for John, his character traits are pretty much what I'd think you'd hope for in a depiction of John Stewart. Focused, disciplined, direct and certainly capable. Are you upset that they depicted him as a former marine, rather than an architect? The military background was actually only introduced in the Animated Justice League version.

I'll give you the generational trauma bit - Grooming him since childhood, probably wouldn't be a story choice I'd have made, but in the comics, his mother was in fact noted to be a civil rights lesder. And John, himself had connections to Black Power movements in the 70's.

I'm not trying to troll here, I just don't really understand how people are so angry over changes to what you call mythology, when even in the source material, things have changed and evolved several of times throughout the characters' histories. Everybody is absolutely entitled to their opinions or preferred versions of characters, but there's no single version that's going to be everyone's favorite. I like some changes less than I do others. But I'd still rather get something new or surprising than some rote, panel for panel regurgitation that doesn't justify a retelling of a story that we've heard before.

This episode sucked so much.
Like the Guardians would come down and give her a [frick]ing diamond and apologize that her husband was scared!? seriously?? GTFO.
The one line that killed me was her saying "Even y'all dont consider us"
[frick]ing shit.
You are saying that to a alien.... Bc all of the universe knows about dumb ass human struggles and that humans got hung up on a skin color so now the entire [frick]ing universe is supposed to feel bad about that??!?!?
This is why Earth will never be included in the Galactic federation of Planets.
I can see it now.. 100000 different species of life and this one small group of Humans feel special.
Its not even about race and somehow people still make it about race.
fuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkk this episode.

@AgentofSH1ELD - "This is why Earth will never be included in the Galactic federation of Planets."

We don't even have warp travel, why would any alien come to our planet if we don't have the necessary tools to go to ANOTHER planet? Even then they didn't even consider Earth till 2161 which is towards the end of ST: ENT. Nothing to do with Earth having "racism" and not getting along since the Vulcans don't even consider Romulans family, capitalistic aliens who prey on greed like the Ferengi or Bajorians who are constantly under prison camps from the Cardassians.

Try to quote use Star Trek as a reference and don't even know the lore right....tsk tsk...

If JS senior wasnt scared, he would have been GL. Fact is he was scared. Thats it. Fear. Fear doesnt work for a GL.

Why in the BLUE hell would the Guardians be concerned or consider the dumb shit Humans are doing when they are protecting the entire universe? This whole reason is why there was never supposed to be a Human GL.
CreateNowSlpL8r
CreateNowSlpL8r - 9/4/2026, 10:50 AM
@AgentofSH1ELD - Because the writers think everything a white male says to them is a micro aggression. That means the rest of the universe must fall in line with their feelings and Hal's character has to be destroyed because he cant possibly just be a fearless hero.

They don't believe in hero's. White males are just privileged and everyone else is just held down.

Thats the story they wanted to tell.

@CreateNowSlpL8r - What sucks the most is I watched episode one and my reaction was: Kevin Feige, James Gunn, Zack Snyder, Amy Pascal and anyone else creating comicbook based visual media should all get together and watch this and try to [frick]ing learn something. We finally have something that is perfect.

and now I have my foot so far in my mouth I can walk on it again.
ugh.
Kick myself.

This stuff is kind of like some odd flashback to 20-30 years ago to have companies urinate on fans and fan opinion. Not that they would have made a show like this on HBO back then.

If this wont get a second season it will be blamed on comicbook fans in some odd way, all like 75k of them who purchase GL comics.

Any amount of rallying behind either of John's parents is horrific and disgusting. They are obsessed with their own failures and insecurities and a "we deserve this" attitude. Any interpretation besides "they are terrible people" is flat-out disturbing.

@SummersEssex - that’s certainly a valid interpretation and one that the show even acknowledges by having John call them crazy.

Personally , I think their intent behind it was understandable but their methods of dropping John in a bad part of town to have him walk home alone or shoot apples off his head ( even though it was his idea initially) were most definitely not right.
TheVisionary25

I think labeling Bernadette as a complete psycho or just a loving mother who wants the best for her son & family is wrong because the answer is more nuanced & complicated then that because she is a bit of both…

Credit to Jasmine Cephas Jones but you see cracks here and there of genuine fear in her eyes and/or face such as when her husband is shooting the apple of John’s head or he’s shooting the apple of hers because she fears for her own safety but also her son’s though it’s still not enough to derail this mission that she essentially came up with for John because in her mind , it’s something that needs to happen for the stability of her family which initially atleast I can get (hell , she’s even aware that John may hate them for it but so be it because ultimately in her mind , it will be the best thing for him in the long run).

I feel like this whole situation is more complex but the discourse around it has made it too black & white aswell as simplistic if not straight up idiotic at times which shows that the internet is just ill equipped to handle conversations like this and just relies on flame baiting posts or articles to get the clicks they want sadly!!.

I was wondering how the heck in 2026 we continue to be fed neo-feminist/DEI nonsense in CBM/TV shows, and a quick AI search reminded me how long this project had been in development. To wit:

"Writing for the DC Studios television series Lanterns began in late 2022 when creators Tom King and James Gunn sketched out the initial concept, with the formal writers' room opening in April 2024. Writing for the first season wrapped up ahead of the start of filming in February 2025."

DEI was dealt a kill-shot at the start of 2025, so the above explains why we got this slop.
