Lanterns Midseason Trailer Reveals Major Hal Jordan Twist, Cosmic Action, And The Blackest Night

A midseason trailer for Lanterns has been released, revealing some unexpected Hal Jordan moments, a meeting between John Stewart and Sinestro, Guy Gardner, Hal's childhood, and more.

DC Studios and HBO have released a midseason trailer for Lanterns, and for fans disappointed by the lack of cosmic action in the first five instalments, it seems the best—and blackest night—is yet to come in the remaining three instalments.

The big twist is that, after what happened in Rushville in 2016, Hal Jordan was arrested and imprisoned for his role in the deaths of the townspeople. It appears he took the fall for John Stewart, and when they unexpectedly reunite (before Hal's death), the former Green Lantern quickly reminds him of that.

What happens between this meeting and the moment that John and Sheriff Kerry Kane discover Hal's frozen body remains to be seen, and all signs in this sneak peek point to him really being dead.

However, there are some very intriguing space-set moments here, including a meeting between John and Sinestro and the 2026 Hal waking up a prisoner somewhere. If we had to guess, this is likely before his body is left in the football stadium, but there's always a slim chance a shapeshifting alien has taken his place to throw John, Kerry, and Guy Gardner—who also appears in the trailer—off the scent.

The trailer also confirms that the series will explore Hal's childhood, which hopefully means the series plans to at least touch on his early days as Green Lantern.

"I saw the description as not a symbiotic relationship with her in that town. I think of it more parasitically," Kyle Chandler recently said of Hal's actions and his clash with the Manhunter, Zoe. "The only reason she's doing what she's doing is so she can keep her safety. She's still a threat, and she's still a danger."

"It's like a really bad guy settling in, saying, 'Hey, I'm gonna hang out here. Don't tell anyone, and until I leave, I'll let you have free dinners,'" the actor continued. "Once she's gone, she's not gonna care about whether [Rushville's citizens] starve or not. So I say the hell with her, and I'm glad she's gone! As a person, I love Poorna – she's great. But as a character, nah, I could care less [for Zoe]. I did my job."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Four episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

Oaky...now, I'm really confused.

Are we heading toward some kind of "Blackest night" Type story arc or "Sinestro Corps War"?

The intraweb rumors is that the shierf's husband is actually Black hand.

@MotherGooseUPus - Yeah like it's pretty good. Kinda wish there was more and it does feel like a lot is held back in terms of action and VFX and sometimes story, but overall...I like it a lot. I'm watching every Sunday and usually I just wait to binge but I've been on it every Sunday after 10 when my wife finishes her shows.

Succession, White Lotus, The Pitt, Mare of Easttown, Task, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Penguin, Industry, Barry.

No it still hits.

@regmovieguy - Succession is the closest thing to a modern masterpiece. White Lotus is very overrated. The Pitt has an amazing Season 1 and fell off massively with Season 2. Mare and Task are fine but nothing special. AKOTSK is good but doesn't come close to GOT. Penguin was [frick]ing amazing but is a miniseries. Industry is just a worst succession imo. Barry was pretty great. Surprised you didn't mention Chernobyl.

I think your list is indicative of what I'm stating. None of these shows (Except Succession) come close to The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Prime GOT, Six Feet Under, Prime Curb, Band of Brothers, True Detective Season 1 or The Leftovers.

FireGunn
FireGunn - 9/17/2026, 11:55 AM
@regmovieguy - Also, even with the shows you mentioned, they're few and far between so much slop garbage like HOTD S2-3, TLOU S2, Euphoria S3, the new seasons of True Detective, etc. I also think HBO (and TV in general) takes far less risks than before. We will never get another series like The Wire ever again. Not with the second screen audience bullshit that's pervading modern tv.

Here is my latest theory on Lanterns after Episode 5...

Noah is secretly the host for Parallax. This is why Zoe was protecting him. He was (in Zoe’s mind) the way to create a power that could rival the Lanterns and Guardians and ultimately keep her safe. The “benefactor” is in fact Sinestro which is why the technology mirrors that of the Guardians (ie...the black portal hole that the Guardians used to teleport John Stewart...

...but also was used by Zoe and Hector Hammond at the cow slaughtering facility).

Elsewhere Lianna’s plans have been foiled by John Stewart Jr. not taking the ring. Since he never recited the oath the ring still belongs to Hal Jordan. Lianna still wants to get rid of Hal but with John declining the ring she needs another plan.

User Comment Image

So she manipulates John Stewart’s father (John Sr.) into hating Hal Jordan even more. He then sets out to kill Hal Jordan for all of the trouble he has caused him personally and his family. John will investigate Hal’s death which will take him to another planet and with the halogram will discover the beginnings of the yellow power source and what it has done to the planet by instilling rampant fear. With Parallax now growing stronger in its host, Noah begins to seduce Hal Jordan informing him that he can give Hal everything the Guardians can with a new power source...yellow light. At first Hal will seem to decline the offer. We will eventually see John Sr. track him down to the Rushville football stadium get into an argument with Hal, punch him in the nose and shoot him point blank. We will then find out that it was not Hal, but Billy Macon (John Ritter) character who like his father is manipulated by Noah to do whatever is needed to protect him including pretend to be Hal Jordan. Noah has access to the healing chamber (what Zoe taught him) and we will find out that he used tissue from Hal who will come around to Noah to create a replica of Jordan with Billy. The reason that Noah does this is that he wants Hal as his ally against the Guardians but knows that Lianna wants him dead (since her first plan failed). Hal realizes this is in fact the case and agrees to fake his death due to the fact that Sinestro (his mentor) and Noah the son of the woman he loves are seemingly on his side.

After his body is found everyone believes Jordan dead and John will be reunited with the ring and this time he will say the oath thus it becoming synched to him.

User Comment Image

Lianna and the Stewart family will believe Hal is dead but John will figure out he is not. This will set up a future storyline win which Hal becomes the host for Parallax.

@Forthas - Sounds like that could be pretty close! I’m guessing at least 50 percent of your take ends up being correct!
Forthas
Forthas - 9/17/2026, 11:59 AM
@Joker666 - That would be really cool if it was...

FYI... I did leave one thing out...it was John Sr. who takes the ring from Hal but he can't use it. John Jr. eventually gets it from his father (which would be ironic) and then says the oath.
Nomis929
Nomis929 - 9/17/2026, 12:55 PM
@Forthas - Interesting theory.

So do you think Lianna is a rougue guardian? Or is he what she say she is.

Or something else?
Forthas
Forthas - 9/17/2026, 1:33 PM
@Nomis929 - Excellent question!!! I am not sure. I don't think she's a rogue Guardian, but I also don't know whether she represents their collective thinking. She seems able to make decisions on their behalf, but she pushes the envelope on the methods for achieving the outcomes the Guardians want. So even if she would want Hal to die so the ring could move on, she won't kill Hal herself, but she is not above creating the condition that might put him in danger, so in my theory she would push people to act against him. For example once John Sr finds out that John Jr doesn't take the ring she would say something to John Sr.like...

"What a shame! All that wasted time and effort and all of the sacrifice that you and your family went through. At this point, if John Jr. will not take the ring, the only other way that he could get it is if something tragic happened to Hal Jordan."

She would say this knowing what a loose cannon John Sr. might be.
