Lanterns' Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed As First Reviews Promise True Detective-Inspired Superhero Tale

Trailers for Lanterns have drawn mixed reactions from fans in recent months, but could the DC Studios TV series end up being one of the year's biggest surprises?

Critics have started weighing in ahead of Sunday's premiere on HBO, and the series is already "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive 91% (based on 32 verdicts). That's miles ahead of the 25% awarded to Green Lantern in 2011.

In terms of the DCU, Lanterns comes in below Creature Commandos (95%) and Peacemaker Season 2 (94%), but above Superman (83%) and Supergirl (52%). Many critics have yet to receive more than just the pilot, so this score will likely evolve in the coming weeks. However, it's unlikely to slip too far below its current spot.

As for the reviews, they're largely very positive. There are some complaints—tonally, it seems this dark and gritty take on Green Lantern wasn't for everyone—but those are largely drowned out by praise for Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre.

"Even in its uneven moments, the stars shine," writes The Hollywood Reporter, with Rolling Stone adding, "Yes, things still do get blowed up real good, and real green! They just tend to do so on terra firma, with far more human stakes than usual."

Empire, meanwhile, concludes, "The grounded and gritty approach pays dividends for Lanterns, which gives the DCU a much-needed win." Over to GamesRader+ (formerly Total Film), it's said, "Lanterns is a captivating murder mystery that prides itself on relentless pacing and masterful character work from Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart to ensure DC's superhero rivals will turn green with envy."

"The series is fresh enough in its details and execution, and strong enough in its writing, and so well performed, that it feels quite original," adds The Los Angeles Times, with Vulture noting, "Kyle Chandler’s having a rip-roaring time as sardonic Hal Jordan, and until John Stewart is allowed to loosen up a bit, he carries the series on his shoulders."

The New York Times' "Rotten" review says, "Lanterns is almost entirely about the dark night of the superhero’s soul," while the San Francisco Chronicle was similarly unimpressed. "There must be a happy medium between Ryan Reynolds wearing a CGI onesie and Kyle Chandler dropping f-bombs every other word, and taking something seriously doesn’t require pretending it isn’t fantastical," the site states.

Newsday concurs. "At turns sour and embittered, other times bemused, "Lanterns" simply refuses to have much fun," the outlet explains, though RogerEbert.com counters, "[It] is a success, incredibly watchable even through its flaws, and nearly heroic in its hits."

So, it's not exactly a 1:1 adaptation of the comics, but strong performances from its leads and a compelling murder mystery seemingly elevate Lanterns above similar superhero fare. Whether the series will find an audience beyond comic book fans remains to be seen, but work has already started on the yet-to-be-greenlit Season 2.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO on August 16.

Lindelof is coming off back-to-back home-runs on TV and people still doubted this show being great lol

I’ve been long overdue for Watchmen rewatch, might fire it back up this weekend.

Obviously incredibly hyped for Sunday night, too.

@tmp3 - I’m a Lindelof homer but Mrs Davis is … not good.

That’s him at his worst.

Excited to check it out. Might even be able to get the wife to watch along with the Friday Night Lights of it all . . .

I'm still under embargo for a full episode 1 review until Sunday night, but it's a solid opener. While it's definitely not a comic-accurate take on Green Lantern (it takes a strange approach to the legacy concept of being a Lantern, and the ending will be divisive), Chandler and Pierre are fantastic, and the mystery is compelling.

I don't give a shit about Rotten Tomatoes. It's absolute garbage. Every show has a positive score and if it doesn't it's one of the worst things ever.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - usually high results from audience and critics the same is a pretty reliable marker of a good/great movie.

-if Lanterns can excite the fanbase,
-and if a little momentum can be added with a fantastic Clayface,
-and if Gunn can deliver a much leaner and straight forward epic in Man of Tomorrow,
-and if The Batman II can outdo itself (and be added to the broader DCU!)

Then the new DC universe could actually go somewhere.

I can't imagine WB not doing everything in their power under heaven and on earth to make Pattinson the one and only DCU Batman. What kind of brain disorder would need to occur to make Gunn not succumb to this reality? Pattinson is only 40 and could embody that role for 20 years. He's easily one of the premiere Hollywood stars out there that is basically liked by everyone. Another actor portraying Batman in Gunn's DCU is too busy and just wouldn't make sense.

@Lucasberg - Reeves, according to Gunn, won't allow it. Could that change once Reeves wraps up his trilogy and is no longer involved with the franchise ? sure, I guess, but will Gunn (assuming he's still involved with DC after the merger) be able to wait that long ?

@TheJok3r - Dude. I think Reeves needs to be told that this is happening and that if he wants, he can go cry about it (really hard if he prefers) or even scream in his pillow at home about it. Reeve's can have multiple coping mechanisms to use for this lol.

-DC has their perfect Superman (sorry Gunn haters but Corenswet is perfect).
-Sounds like they have a winner in Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
-If you can just fricken grandfather that Pattinson in, we have real progress for a universe that could work

Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/14/2026, 1:41 PM
@Nolanite - Ah! that is much appreciated good sir.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 8/14/2026, 1:49 PM
@Lucasberg - WB signed a 10 year contract with Reeves roughly 6 months before Gunn took over DC; they can't just go against it without facing serious legal and financial consequences. There's also the fact that The Batman made over $150 million more than Superman did, so things are currently in Reeves' favor. If Batman II hits a billion and Man of Tomorrow is sitting around the $700 million mark, then Reeves' grip on Batman will just get stronger.
Nolanite
Nolanite - 8/14/2026, 1:24 PM
This is what happens when Gunn keeps his hands to himself.

Sure, he's the boss but aside from Superman he should give each director creative freedom to do as they please and then he'll get these kinda results.

pattinson is one of the hottest movie start right now , warner bros got lucky to cast him when he was still trying to make people forget he was edward in twilight.

why would the dcu go for a lesser actor to play their batman ? it's impossible to cast a bigger star with more talent than pattinson for the role right now.
Mrnorth1921
Mrnorth1921 - 8/14/2026, 1:39 PM
@lord22 - he doesn’t want do it. Gunn tried to strike a deal with Reeves and Pattinson. Neither wanted to incorporate the Batman into the greater DCU. Both aren’t fans of giant franchises or universes.

@Mrnorth1921 - they gotta give Pattinson many many green colored marks with Benjamin Franklin's face on them and he will like it

“John is a young Black man. Hal is an old white guy. John does everything right, and Hal thinks he does everything right. John has been working his whole life to be deemed a worthy member of the Green Lantern corps, and Hal was literally handed the ring after answering a single yes-or-no question correctly.”
