Lanterns Showrunner Confirms Season 2 Will Be Another "Grounded" Story Set On Earth

While Lanterns hasn't been officially renewed for Season 2, ideas are being tossed around, and showrunner Chris Mundy has now confirmed that the plan is to keep the action set on Earth.

When Lanterns was announced as a True Detective-style TV series, it was obvious that DC Studios was looking to break into prestige television and put a fresh spin on a franchise that had become the butt of many jokes after the 2011 movie.

Over the course of eight episodes, Green Lantern constructs were few and far between, as was any costumed action. In terms of space-set scenes, there were brief visits to an intergalactic prison and a barren planet, though the pink-skinned Sinestro was the closest the series came to showing a bona fide alien (the Manhunters, for example, just looked like regular humans).

Despite hints in previous interviews that the idea was to reintroduce the Green Lantern concept before blasting into space with a much bigger, bolder second season, showrunner Chris Mundy has now confirmed that the action will primarily remain on Earth if Season 2 happens.

"It’s like we’ve tossed out a lot of different things," he says in the video below when asked about a possible Lanterns Season 2. "I mean, again, we want to treat it all—you know, we won’t be back in Rushville most likely unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’re going to—it’s going to be an Earth-based story that we continue most likely."

"I mean, would you—we’ve shown that you can leave the planet, so that’s good, right?" Mundy added. "But because of that, we want to make whoever’s here as sort of grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers."

The writer continued, "But it’s just like, okay, are you with us? Great. Now we can expand. And it’s the same thing with introducing all the other Lanterns and stuff."

While the series has hinted at potentially exploring the formation of the Sinestro Corps, for example, it sounds like fans shouldn't read too much into any apparent teases in last night's season finale. Why? Well, Mundy confirmed that while Lanterns wasn't written as a limited series, they also weren't laying the groundwork for future stories.

"We didn’t write toward platforming for our Season 2," he revealed. "We always wrote assuming there would be a Season 2, you know what I mean? We didn’t think of it as a limited series. We thought of it as this is a show that’s going to keep going on, but we were just trying by the skin of our teeth to finish this season."

"It wasn’t like, 'Oh, we’ve got a great idea for two and three, so let’s layer in.' Some of it is just, you take a look at what you made and what’s interesting to you and what’s useful and then you go from there," Mundy explained. "And hopefully you created characters that you could do different things with and put them in different situations."

While John Stewart, now Earth's protector, is set to suit up in next summer's Man of Tomorrow, it appears any future solo adventures will remain on Earth.

The finale actually established that during his conversation with Guy Gardner, and with Sinestro's story seemingly over and emotions no longer an integral part of what powers a Lantern, anyone hoping for concepts like Parallax, the Sinestro Corps, and The Spectre will likely be disappointed. After all, the finale delivered almost none of what fans were eager to see in the show's concluding chapter.

You can hear more from Mundy on the Lanterns finale in the player below. If you're looking for a full breakdown of what happened in "Dirt and Stars," we have you covered right here.

Ok, I gave it a chance to the very last episode and man was this show weaker than the crap Marvel put on Disney+.
Why does the show feel like they probably had ai write it for them? Gunn’s going to run DC into the ground and do perverted things to it.

@joshwilding, Sinesteo literally says in the episode “Fear can be powerful” did we watch the same show or did you just skim the highlights?

I'd be way more interested in a film with John and Guy having to deal with Siniestro and ultimately, a resurrected Parralax Hal.

The thought of Sinestro swimming through a lake of fear to emerge free on the other side would be a gnarly setup.

Regardless, I loved eps 1-7, but that finale was balls.

@TheWinkler - Agreed 100%. I expected more out of the finale. But I like the series though. Here's hoping we get a season 2.

@OneMoreTime - how is a TV show a flop, when it gains new users every week and has high scores? Every Marvel show except for Loki, Wandavision, and X-Men '97 has been trash. You wanna compare apples to oranges when you have rat turds

I mean, it certainly didn't go the way I was expecting....

But I think they left enough nuggets for a potential season 2 or movie...

Sinestro's is still out there. And he did mention he could bring Hal back

There's the issue with the Lantern

And then how the guardians will react.

I definitely expected better from the talent involved with the writing but the actors were great. Id give it a 7 outa 10 for the whole season. Finale was weak but it tied up what needed to be.

We need more sci fi elements though and a good way plausibly linked with the comics if they bring Hal back (not just thr Halogram) because a season 2 just won't work without Chandler.

John has made a pact with the devil. Now I can only wait to see how John becomes corrupted over the course of the next season.

No need for confirmation....John Stewart said it himself....

"You got Sector (Whatever)....I got Earth."

Terrible decision by the way...

Gunn stated in interviews that his take on the DCU was inspired by Bruce Timm's DCAU.

The DCAU Justice League, particularly Unlimited, featured a lot of Earth-bound storylines. The finale ended with John becoming an independent, Earth-focused Green Lantern.

While I wouldn't have necessarily done what Mundy and co. have done, I am intrigued by what might come next.

(Also, do keep in mind that the Life Entity resides within Earth, so this may not stay as grounded as some may think...)

My take away from the ending? John Stewart is a selfish prick.

Noah confesses murdering Jordan, the sheriff admits to killing Jordan, and… does nothing about it. Why? For the same reason that he doesn't take Sinestro up on the offer to bring Hal back to life even without the ring: no Jordan means no opposition to Stewart taking the ring he finally feels he deserves, compared to Gardner.

Then, at the end, he tells Gardner to stop being Earth's Lantern because he's asserting "independent contractor" status. As if that's enough of a reason to throw off the authority of the galaxy – but, wait: they denied the Stewarts their ring, so he doesn't care about them either.

Chandler's performance indicates he knows John is lying about her final words but accepts it.

And Stewart's last act in the series? Pay off the one person who can prove he's not a hero (because she would testify he is equally responsible for the destruction) so that he can come home to his momma all smiles – he's now the Lantern as his family wanted, the "chosen" one.

WB/DC should be ashamed: Hal is left a broken hero who deserves death, Gardner a punch line that deserves nothing more, and Sinestro… meh.

I don't care about the ratings numbers… I don't want a season 2. Unless Sinestro planned on Stewart betraying him and getting Jordan back anyway.
