Lanterns Writers Double Down On Hal Jordan Being A Racist And Bringing Their Political Beliefs Into The DCU

Lanterns writers Vanessa Baden Kelly and Justin Britt-Gibson stand firm in their belief that Hal Jordan is a racist and explain how their political and personal opinions influenced the DCU series.

There isn't much that doesn't divide people these days, but Lanterns, while critically acclaimed, has split opinions. Some love the show's bold new approach to the Green Lantern mythos, while others have been quick to express their dissatisfaction with the portrayal of Hal Jordan.

The argument is that the series has torn down Hal to build John Stewart up, portraying the hero as a failure and a racist. While Tom King and Damon Lindelof are in charge of Lanterns alongside Chris Mundy, writers Vanessa Baden Kelly and Justin Britt-Gibson appear to be the driving force behind Hal's controversial portrayal.

In an interview with The Ringer-Verse, Kelly doubled down on her decision to position Hal as a racist. "The thing that has been very, very shocking to me was the inability to have some nuance [about Hal's portrayal]," she said of the reaction from fans. "I'm from Florida, so I grew up around a lot of white people who would probably use the N-word amongst their peers and then also turn around and defend you in something."

The DCU's Hal may be from the "South," but his comic book counterpart hails from Coast City, which is located in California. However, that's just one of many changes Lanterns has made to the pilot-turned-superhero.

"I can look at Hal's microaggressions and be like, yeah, he's got some racist tendencies because he's a man of a certain age that grew up in a certain time and place," Kelly continued. "I also feel like he probably f***s aliens in other places and doesn't feel like he's non-discriminatory."

"And both things are true. And for the audiences to sometimes not be able to hold that both things are true was really difficult for me, because they're like, 'Why are you making him a racist?'" she added. "Like, no, I'm making him a 60-year-old dude. I think that he is in the way that 60-year-old white dudes from the South can be, but don't think they are because they golf with a Black dude."

Kelly went on to explain that the Democratic National Convention played a role in how she and Britt-Gibson wrote Lanterns, comparing Hal and John's dynamic to that of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. As Kelly puts it, "we extrapolated characters that we knew in real life, you know, and dumped it into those guys."

Britt-Gibson, meanwhile, suggested Hal is particularly resistant to being replaced by John because, "You've been holding on to this sort of legacy, and then all of a sudden this young guy comes around, young and Black and handsome, and strong and confident. It's threatening."

Later, Kelly explained how Aaron Pierre's lighter skin tone changed how they wrote the show and implied that the Guardians of the Universe were more open to choosing John because his skin wasn't as dark as that of his brothers.

"Justin and I sat together and we talked about it, and we brought it to Chris and Damon, and they were just immediately like, 'We trust that you guys know your folks. Get busy. Go do what you have to do,'" she recalled. "We kind of baked in this idea that part of his being chosen is because they felt like his particular looks were more palatable to white people."

There's a lot to unpack here, and fans are likely to have strong feelings about Kelly and Britt-Gibson's perception of the DCU's Hal. Writers bringing their own thoughts and beliefs to these comic book adaptations is nothing new, but judging by the reaction on social media, some feel the Lanterns scribes risk crossing a line.

Seven episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

@JoshWilding - "no I don't fan the flames of negativity, what are you talking about? I only post positive reviews. I would never misrepresent a quote just for clickbait" Yeah right bucko! When you say you would ban more than half the users on this site - you mean any liberal or left-leaning person. You love this culture war bullshit.

@foreverintheway - You have no idea what my political beliefs are. And nothing here is "misrepresented." I watched the interview in full, and this is exactly what they both said, presented in the context in which it was said.

@JoshWilding - a lot of people loosen the Mortal coil at 72… miles an hour. That’s why I always go 100. Very few people die going 100. Because very few people go that fast. So it only makes sense to go that fast.

It's funny because having been here a while, I'd have figured you were moderate, maybe slightly left leaning, but still fairly balanced. BUT because you even slightly agreed with a JK Rowling view last week, now you want to "ban all the liberal or left-leaning users" 🤣🤣🤣 like what???

@TheFinestSmack - Haha, yeah, I'd say that's accurate. I have strong opinions like anyone else on certain subjects (the Rowling thing is a pretty good example of that, I guess), but it looks like I've graduated from being a "woke warrior" to CBM's resident Nazi?! I give everything I watch a chance to see if it gets better. It's very rare that I'll drop something. I'm sure as shit not watching a Season 2 of this if it's even remotely similar to this season and more of the same, but spending an hour once a week watching this isn't nearly the hassle people think it is.

Why does every one of these articles end up having the most comments. Some people who never say a word show up just to ramble on about this. I hate racists, bigots, and sexists but Hal really didn't come across as a racist? Am I crazy? He calls John Junior which could be like calling him boy but idk. Regardless the show is top notch. The comic book nerds don't love it, the racists obviously hate it, but everyone else seems to really enjoy it. The majority is all that matters

Regardless of their comments, one thing I like about the show is it's not just about racism.

Racism is a minor factor, but it's like when John went into the gun shop.

The employees were likely more upset that he was part of the Green Lanterns rather than for him being black.

That said, there's a lot of stupid writing in this show.

@alleverybody - Yeah you can tell a bunch of white dudes wrote it then ran it through SJW black writers and took their SJW notes verbatim. Its so sassy and each character has such a victim mentality.

Dropping young john stuart to walk home from the hood and shooting an apple off his head to show fearlessness is so cheesy and cringe. Felt like it was taken from a Key & Peele or Dave Chappelle comedy skit.

@mastakilla39 - The apple off the head is so bizarre. It wasn't a test of how scared the kid was. The kid was oblivious of any danger.

My thinking is Damon Lidelof & Chris Mundy were just taking a pay-check, offered their two cents, and let the less experienced people do whatever they wanted.

Mundy's Ozark and Damon's Watchmen and Mrs. Davis were better written than Lanterns.

I really like the show DESPITE the writers making it hard to whenever they speak.

It seems like Lanterns is accidentally a good show lol.

And yes, it's good despite not being what most of us would have done with the Green Lanterns.

@DiegoMD - I put it in the same category as the Barbie movie, the writers accidentally proved the opposite point than the one they were probably trying to make.
