HBO’s take on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas ended up being something of a total sleeper hit.
Sure, Game of Thrones is a popular IP, but the House of the Dragon prequel spin-off doesn't quite produce the same size waves.
But unlike the first prequel, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' lighter, breezier vibe appears to be a breath of fresh air that's producing popularity on the same magnitude as the original series.
And we might be getting back to the action sooner than initially expected.
Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg, quietly broke the news on his Instagram Stories that production on Season 2 is done, paving the way for an early-to-mid 2027 debut.
Production on season 2 was slowed by torrential rains in Gran Carina, Spain, pushing the series' initial filming wrap date from June to August.
But it looks as if the show is still on track to arrive in the first half of 2027.
The first season of the show has gone on to secure 9 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
It will compete against The Diplomat (Netflix), The Gilded Age (HBO Max), Paradise (Hulu), The Pitt (HBO Max), Pluribus (Apple TV+), Slow Horses (Apple TV+), and Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV+).
The winner will be announced at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, which will take place live on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Given the popularity of the series, George R.R. Martin has confirmed that he's currently writing a new entry in the novella series to keep the show going.
There are currently three published Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010). All three novellas are collected in a compilation book titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2015).
The 6-episode first season covered 100% of The Hedge Knight and even expanded on bits not mentioned in the books (with Martin's backing) so if the production keeps the same pace, there's currently enough published material for 3 seasons.
Showrunner Ira Parker previously stated that Season 1 was a story about "fathers and sons and what's passed on to the next generation," while Season 2 would deal with the ramifications of "loyalty" and more specifically, "blind loyalty."
Recently, George R.R. Martin gave a melancholy update on his blog that has some longtime fans concerned about the author's health, but there's also equal concern about the completion of The Winds of Winter and the new Dunk and Egg novella.
