Winter is coming to the big screen.
Following years of rumors, we finally got confirmation that a Game of Thrones movie is in development at Warner Bros. this summer, and the project has now enlisted a director and set an official release date.
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will arrive in theaters on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) will direct, with writer Beau Willimon (House of Cards) on script duties.
Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, Terminator Zero) was previously working on a TV show treatment for this story, which is (presumably) no longer moving forward.
Specific plot details are still under wraps, but the story will (obviously) focus on Aegon I Targaryen, aka Aegon the Conqueror.
In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga, Aegon was the first ruler to unite the Seven (or is that nine?) Kingdoms of Westeros, and forged the Iron Throne from the melted-down weapons of his enemies. He ruled Westeros with his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and their three massive dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.
Though we didn't know what the project would focus on at the time, HBO boss Casey Bloys teased the possibility of the first-ever Game of Thrones movie back in 2024.
"They’re going to develop idea," he said. "We’ll see if it’s good. We’ll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. I mean, that’s the point of development, you see is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun."
Game of Thrones will continue on the small screen with the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon coming in 2028, and the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set for next year. Other GOT projects are said to be in various stages of development, including a sequel series that would focus on Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).
The Jon Snow sequel series, tentatively titled Snow, is no longer moving forward, although Kit Harington did indicate that it may still happen down the line during a recent interview.
"I think we developed it, [were] developing it for two years or so. I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t. I was very insistent at the start—and they were as well, HBO and George—of, like, if this doesn’t—if we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much, much better we don’t."

New additions include Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin, Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and James Norton as Ormund Hightower.
