House of the Dragon proved to be a major success (even bigger than anticipated) for HBO, so it was probably only a matter of time before more Game of Thrones spin-off shows were announced.

Now, Variety is reporting that another prequel series that would take us back even further than the events of the Dance of the Dragons is in the very early stages of development.

According to the trade, this show would focus on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.

Nothing has been grenlit yet, so no writer is currently attached, though sources say that the "search is underway as HBO is keen to move forward and get it into development."

Apparently, a feature film that would lead directly into the series is also being discussed, but details are few and far between.

If the show does move forward, it will tell the story of how "Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty. Those events took place approximately 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones."

Aegon the Conqueror, who rode Balerion the Black Dread, was mentioned several times throughout HBO's Game of Thrones, and Arya recounted his exploits to Tywin Lannister in season 2, episode 7.

What do you make of this news? Would you be down for more GOT prequels? Drop us a comment down below.

Could be cool, I figured they'd go with a bunch of spin offs. It's a money making series

@bobevanz - and that's why I think they could also go with feature films more. Quick way to tell a bunch of stories and earn that money quickly

The feature film angle to this has me more intrigued honestly. Think this is a great universe that lends itself for movies, moreso than countless spin-offs atleast.

@bkmeijer1 - And video games! How the hell have we not got a Nights Watch video game yet? Beyond the wall open-world, with Castle Black being the hub. WB are [frick]ing inept.

@PlusUltra - that's a really good idea. Think the Telltale game was pretty solid, but an open-world RPG would be especially great.

Think it would also be fun to have a Westeros open-world. Think it would be fun too to start as a member of a smaller house, and as the story progresses you can choose to join larger houses and stuff like that.

I need to watch House of Dragons.. Haven't seen it yet. heard great things. I was a HUGE GoT fan until the final 2/3 seasons which were a let down.. but i'll give these 2 a shot

THIS!

This is what I personally wanted even before HOTD.

Since the book F&B cannot be trusted as a reliable narrative, GRRM introducing Aegon dreamed of the White Walker invasion, and learning what really happened to Rhaenys/Dorne.

Lots a of gold to mine. Grab your pick ax HBO!

So they are taking George RR Martin’s book Fire & Blood and just taking shows from the different eras out of order? The middle section became House of the Dragons. The early section will turn into this show/movie. Then they will likely to a Mad King section that tackles the later part of the book.

@mountainman - Geez what an idiot. The Mad King wasn’t in that book. It ended before he was in power. The planned sequel book will cover that era.

Speaking of that. It would be cool to get the mad king leading into Robert’s Rebellion. That stuff could be fun on screen.

Should have done these in order after Thrones. Aegon's Conquest first. Then Dance of Dragons, then Robert's rebellion. And only give them the amount of seasons needed. Don't drag them out. One show many only need 2 seasons while another may need 4.

@CplHicks - Agreed. This is the one they should have started with and then moved on to Dance. Keep it light, three or four seasons max and move on.

But its cool they are thinking of doing this, hope it happens.

they should make it a trilogy. I think it could make bank at the box office and it'll be different then what we're used to.

YES! This was pretty obvious but happy for the confirmation.

So it's not enough that we already have a show based on the Dance of the Dragons, we have to have Aegon's Conquest as well?? A show that will be basically about Aegon bending over not only his sister/wives but the kingdoms as well? I always did hate the Conquest story.

All of this and they can't even give us a Robert's Rebellion prequel series.

Typical.
