HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Intimacy Coordinator On Moving On From "Gratuitous" Sex And Nudity In GAME OF THRONES

House of the Dragon has definitely dialled back on the level of sex and nudity we were used to seeing in Game of Thrones, and the show's intimacy coordinator has now explained that process. Check it out!

Game of Thrones was often criticised for what many viewers felt were gratuitous sex scenes and too much nudity. Star Emilia Clarke even talked openly about feeling uncomfortable after being asked to shoot certain sequences as a young actress. While those moments did sometimes serve a purpose, they later started feeling like they were being thrown in just for the sake of it.

House of the Dragon has featured its fair share of risque moments thus far, but seems to have dialled things back a little when it comes to how much of that we actually see on screen.

Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), intimacy coordinator Miriam Lucia was asked about the series not being quite as sexually explicit as its predecessor. "Yes. Definitely. Game Of Thrones had a negative reputation – which they’ll admit — in terms of the press and the #MeToo movement," she says, "and with Emilia Clarke and other actors talking about how difficult and gratuitous it could be at times, and how much pressure they felt."

"So, I think what you get on House Of The Dragon is not only a production team that are sensitive to that, but you get a cast that is very aware of it and careful about what they will agree to," Lucia added. "That precedent had been set. "It was about finding the balance for [showrunners] Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal. [Sexual content and nudity] is part of the show, it’s part of the essence of what it is, but we’re in a new era."

Asked what the most challenging scene working on House of the Dragon has been, Lucia would suggest that the best (worst?) may still be to come in the HBO series and declined to give too much away. She did, however, look back at a couple of particularly difficult moments on set requiring her to work closely with the show's cast members.

"I’ll say probably the scene with Emily and Paddy because of her age, and the implications of that, and maybe the way that would be viewed, and whether I had done enough work on that. But I felt very good about working with Clare [Kilner] on that."

"But also with Milly in the same episode. When we shot her intimate scene with Daemon, Matt Smith was in his late 30s and she was only 20 or 21? She’s not underage but many of these young women haven’t done scenes like this before."

House of the Dragon is being made in a completely different time to Game of Thrones, so changes were to be expected. Hiring someone like Lucia to ensure this prequel series doesn't repeat its predecessor's mistakes is a smart and necessary move, and one that's so far been praised by fans and critics.

Do you think House of the Dragon has done a good job of not overdoing it on the sex and nudity these past five weeks? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments section.

It's completely unnecessary though.

@Imprtracr1 - Of course it's not necessary, it's HBO!

@Imprtracr1 - Are you saying the Intimacy coordinator is unnecessary? Sex and Nudity on a show that is a branch of GOT unnecessary? Or toning it down is unnecessary?

Cause the more nudity the better! And i find it how the liberal Hollywood people are all for sex and nudity with minors okay in their personal life but not on TV LOL LOL.... And are all for "free the nipple" and female ebody expression and "not slut shaming" ..... But not on a TV show.....

LOL the Hypocrisy of it all!!!!!

@EpicMan - I feel like every article here lately is about "woke" Hollywood, and people get so mad at the studios.

Movie executives prolly don't give a crap about diversity they just want the most people to pay for their product, i.e. minorities. They are going to keep being woke as long as it makes more money...

I don't really have an opinion either way, but ur right about nudity being great lol

@EpicMan - my meaning is that a show doesn't need to include it to be of quality and it doesn't add anything necessary to the story by showing it as opposed to implying it under correct context.
It doesn't NEED to be imaged.

It was pretty ridiculous on the level of Austin Powers the lengths they went to, to hide Milly Alcock’s body jn her sex scene with Cole.

@eddyxx - think about why they did that. Milly is only playing the character in the first five episodes. Naked bodies are very different. If they show her younger actress naked they know they can’t show Emma D’Arcy naked as the character later. Boobies come in lots of different shapes and sizes.

Intimacy Coordinator? Really? That's a real job title? I have so many questions. Does this imply that sex scenes have a choreography, like dance or fight scenes? Are there rehearsels for those and experts performing in front of the actors to give them a sense of the coordinators vision? How would you apply for a position like that? Are there people who set out to engage in a career path towards "intimacy coordination" or does this just kinda happen by accident. How do job interviews for a position as an intimacy coordinator look like? Do you need to send in a portfolio?

Basically I'm asking, did George R.R. Martin one day walk onto a porn set like "Son, I recognize talent when I see it. You are the best at what you do! And what you do is coordinating two people boning done real good! It's your choice! You can waste these skills at a badly lit production in somebodies basement to create something meaningless that a middle aged creep can wank to! Or you can work for me, at a big budget production in Hollywood to create something special that the whole world can wank to!"

@Drace24 - Their job is essentially to help with the choreography of the scene as you suggest, as well as to work with both actors to make sure they aren't feeling awkward or doing anything they don't feel comfortable doing.

@Drace24 - I knew I wasn't the only one with questions. My main one was if the coordinator also has to think and work with the entire context of the sex and nude scenes, or just those alone.

Think it definitely helps if someone can help the actors get in the right mindset for this sorta thing.

Too sexual? Why agree to do the show then? As for the viewers, who exactly was out there complaining that the show had too much sex and nudity?
Drace24
Drace24 - 9/20/2022, 10:20 AM
@Jacory - Non-pervs? Or atleast people who realize that they can have this sort of thing without paying for a HBO subscription nowadays.
Jacory
Jacory - 9/20/2022, 10:29 AM
@Drace24 - So you're a perv if you don't complain about sex and nudity in tv shows? HHmmm ... that's new ... and also just because there's sex and nudity in a show doesn't mean it takes away from the story, nor doesn't it mean that's the main reason people watch the show ... except for maybe Spartacus. lol

"Gratuitous Sex And Nudity" is the main reason the show was so successful, in the first place.

The second main reason was violence.

Excellent storytelling was just a bonus.

MrDandy - 9/20/2022, 10:05 AM
I’m not sure what they are talking about. There is an entire episode dedicated to orgies, incest, and sex lol!

Either way, show has been great and who cares how much sex and nudity is or isn’t in the show as long as it is serving the story, which it seems to be so far. At least their not doing long “sexposition” scenes like the original series.

There are a lot of shows that have a lot of sex & nudity and because games of thrones became so popular & have a lot of sex & nudity scene then there are people who want to change that but never go after the those other show with this sex nudity scene
