GAME OF THRONES Star Emilia Clarke On Daenerys' Fate: "It's Not Fair That Jon Gets To Live"

The final season of Game of Thrones proved to be highly divisive for a number of reasons, but the development that arguably came in for the most backlash was the fate of fan-favorite character Daenerys Targaryen.

Pushed to breaking point by the deaths of two of her dragons and loyal friends Missandei of Naath and Jorah Mormont, Dany gave in to the madness that's long plagued her family and burned King's Landing to the ground in order to exact her revenge on Cersei Lannister.

When the Queen of Dragons sentenced Tyrion to death for freeing his brother Jamie, Jon Snow realized that she'd become a tyrant and reluctantly ended her life.

Although Dany's ultimate "heel turn" was foreshadowed in the earlier seasons, many fans refused to accept her demise, and it sounds like actress Emilia Clarke wasn't too happy about her character's death, either.

"I still think Daenerys did nothing wrong. It's not fair that Jon gets to live," she joked when asked about her character's demise during an appearance at DIF London over the weekend (via SFFGazette.com). “I want Daenerys with him. With Jon. They could go to family therapy and fix their issues. Daenerys is a very hopeful character, she has a lot of hopes, and I wished that she was able to achieve that."

Though Daenerys certainly appeared to be dead as a doornail, we have seen characters resurrected in the HBO show. Is there any chance Clarke could return for the planned Jon Snow sequel series? The Secret Invasion star admitted that it's highly unlikely, but did add: "Never say never."

There's a popular theory that Drogon brought his "mother" to the Red Priests of Volantis in the series finale, who may have the power to bring her back to life. We wouldn't hold our breath for a Daenerys appearance in the Jon Snow series, but even if she does return, something tells us she's not going to be on her nephew's side!

@AmazingFILMporg - You’re supposed to think of your character as the good guy, but are you supposed to pretend you think of your character is a good guy how are you supposed to actually think your character is a good guy? If you’re just kind of going along with some thing because you have to sell the product, sell the car as Steven Spielberg said about Shia LaBeouf, then this kind of an implied Disingenuosness that we I’ll just play along with, of course old dude is supposed to love the governor, he played the governor, or Freddie, or whoever. But there’s a difference between supporting your character and really meaning it lol, I’m going to assume she’s selling the car.

Her becoming mad in the end and destroying that city makes no sense

@Urubrodi - Yeah I agree, they kept hinting at breaking the wheel and I thought she was gonna do that.

@Urubrodi - She had murdered the whole time. Sure she could try to justify the previous ones, but she is a bad person from a line of bad people that inbreed. Her attacking Kings Landing is one of the few things that makes sense in season 8. If she had ended up in the Iron Throne it would have been such a cliche ending that goes against what Game of Thrones is. The core message is that all political leaders are evil, that none of them care about you, nobody will save you. Just like in the real world.

@mountainman - I do get what they were aiming for but in my opinion the execution was terrible, she did kill before yes, but not a bunch of innocent people just for the sake of it. The development of her madness was not done well.

@Urubrodi - 100% agree that they didn’t build it well. I think it was the inevitable end for her. Too bad they rushed the final 2 seasons and focused on spectacle over character and story. If Martin ever finishes the books, I expect it to be integrated better.

@Urubrodi - I didnt like her killing that slave who killed the son of the harpy. Never liked her after that. She also executed all the Dathoraki leaders because she didnt like their customs regarding widows or she wanted an army. Probably the army.

@Urubrodi - exactly and that’s the unforgivable reason and how they butchers her characters until then amazing story arc. If she become increasing brutal and unhinged over the course of the next few seasons that they didn’t do, fine I still wldnt like it for her I thought she deserved and worked the most for the throne. But I could prolly live with it, instead she goes mad in the course of a few hours/days and murders millions. Right after she got what she always wanted. Sorry not buying it.

"she joked when asked about her character's demise". She wasn't joking. I think she viewd her character as a heroic figure. And heroes never go out like that.

We will see how GRR ends the books. (if he does).

If he ends it with a different ending for Danny…well, they have the SNOW show to course correct.

Problem is … Disney needs to stop hiring her. If she is flush with dough…it will be harder to pull her back on the GOT Show.

What's not fair is investing years of your life into one of the best fantasy series on tv to ever happen, only to have 2 showrunners rush the final season, abandon plotlines from previous seasons, and overall end it on such an inconsistent note that a rewatch is borderline impossible due to knowing just how badly it ends.

I'll never forget seeing the guy who played Varys at the table reading for one of S8's episodes just looking downright miserable while going over the script.

Daenerys deserved that throne!

Oh boo hoo, she committed mass murder. Big hairy deal. Just how do you think thrones are won in the first place? Mass frickin' murder, that's how.

mountainman

@GarthRanzz - See the more Game of Thrones tule ending is that Bran, as the Three Eyed Raven, manipulated everything in order to end up on the Iron Throne. That would have been so much better than just being chosen by the council.

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain the hero has to kill.

Shut up Emelia. The dark ending for her was fitting. One of the only good things about season 8, although it could have been telegraphed better. She was always set up to turn evil. A happy ending isn’t what Game of Thrones is about. This is why every other project this woman has been in during her career has been abysmal.
