AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Episode 02 '0-8-4' Poll & Discussion

Episode 02 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is now in the books, what did you think? Has your optimism about Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his 'Scooby gang' grown or lessened?

Two episodes in and my money's on Skye (Chloe Bennet), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) and obviously Coulson to be the fan favorites of the show. Fitz-Simmons (Iain De Caestecker -Elizabeth Henstridge) don't seem to have their timing and rapport quite figured out yet and Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) just seems incredibly bland. Still, it's very early on in the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and there were bound to be some growing pains. Things should pick up next week as we get our first true super villain on the show.

Agents of SHIELD banner ABC

Where's the option for "Terrible - Felt very Whedon-y"?

Ward is boring. My only complaint. Die Ward. Die.

Literally just got finished watching it (I'm in Australia and they aired the pilot and 0-8-4 as a double feature).

I think it's good, has the potential to be GREAT, but it's bogged down by too many "whedon-isms". It felt like a live-action cartoon sometimes, especially with Fitz/Simmons and Coulson's one-liners. The whole sub-plot with Reyes and Coulson was silly, but i like how they tied it to The Avengers with the "Common enemy" theme.

All in all, not bad and with definite room for improvement.

3/5 stars.

Not as good as the point..messier, more poorly thought out and scripted. Not a good sign.

I loved the episode. I thought the character development really grew this episode. Give them one or two more missions and they'll be able to play off each others skills and really make a bad ass TV show that can lead into other Marvel movies. All the characters grew on me after last nights episode, even Ward. Looking forward to the third ep.

I preferred it over the pilot, but it still has issues. The script is poor at times and they seem to be pushing the Marvel connections too much.

Also, I'd like to see more dialogue between characters. Build up their relationships.

Needs more Coulson. I do enjoy the interplay of Fitz-Simmons. I agree Ward is extremely dull, but that is how he is written thusfar. More troubling is the other two female characters: I don't enjoy the performances of the actress who plays Melinda May; and the Skye character is...well...more of a stretch in believability than the superheroes.

here's how I view it :
Instead of fans having down time between Marvel Universe films Feige, Marvel and Whedon are giving us an appetizer of a build up to Avengers 2. It won't be necessary to have watched SHIELD to understand the sequel but for fans its a way to travel along with the timeline. First episode was very AIM related, second episode very HYDRA related which for the fans will pay off in 2014 for Captain America 2 which is set 2 years after the battle of New York and in 2015 for Age of Ultron which ultimately I believe we will get a super powered villain squad to take on the Avengers in the first act of the movie leading to Ultron's creation and threat.
Maybe the series won't be as good as FIREFLY or BUFFY but SHIELD at least is serving its purpose which is giving us something to do while we wait for the Avengers sequel. If WB and DC start to kind of do that with ARROW it would make the build up to Justice League sweeter. Batman vs Superman needs no build- EVERYONE is going to see that.

I thought it was worse than the pilot. Here I am thinking that AoS is going to be like FIREFLY, and here we get some odd A-TEAM / MACGYVER vibe going.

I hope Joss has more scripting input in the next few episodes.

Obviously the best part was the Fury cameo.
Hope he had more appearances.

The show is real good, good story, action & the characters are good.
That's the problem..it's only good. I expected better.

There are more shows to improve & hopefully reach "great" status.

@Luminus, that would be AWESOME!!! Especially if Rising Tide or whatever ended up actually being HYDRA.

The After Credits was worth any flaw sin the actual episode. Like Buffy and Angel, I expect this to get TONS better by season 2 and 3.

The Good:

1. Chloe Bennett's Skye is the break out hit of this show.
2. I kind of like the plane they use.
3. May was a little more interesting this episode.
4. SLJ is a boss and stole the whole show in 10 seconds.
5. Loved that they mentioned HYDRA, now how about some AIM love.

The Bad:
1. Ward is boring
2. Fitz-Simmons are just annoying and not in a good way they are supposed to be.
3. The sets really looked cheap even by tv standards.
4. The baddie of the week was pretty terrible.
5. The story was weak sauce. A highschool writing student could have came up with the teamwork story.

The Ugly:
Coulson or should I say Clark Gregg shouldn't be the lead man in a tv show. He just doesn't have leading man qualities. It has to be Gregg because I suspect that if John Hamm were cast as Coulson it would work, maybe.

It's just amazing how SLJ just came in and felt right as the head. I assume the producers knew this and that's why we have Ward, too bad he's just a lunk at the moment.

And of course Rising Tide is HYDRA. Skye likely doesn't know that. Her speech about 100 people have 1% of the answer (mulitple heads of the mythological Hydra)reads out of the HYDRA handbook. The Hydra rising from the tide.

Its Marvel.. they are BUILDING towards something. Towards a payoff. As good as Firefly was it took a few episodes to gain traction. This show is the same. By episode 5 it should have a nice flow to it.

More thoughts:

For this show to work, they need to delve into to inner workings of SHIELD a bit more. The agency is set up in the movies as an organization that can't be trusted. I'm hoping the team starts to question the group they work for.

I also hope we soon fast forward a few months to when the characters are already a well-oiled team. Getting to know about the in-between adventures in measured bits and pieces is part of the fun of a good ensemble show. Seeing their growing pains? Not so much fun.

This ep was better than the cliche ridden pilot, but it's still just ok. The problem with Whedon stuff including the Avengers, is that everyone sounds the same. They usually have no voice of their own, they just constantly spout whedonisms.
