AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Officially Renewed For Season 7 - But They May Be Down One Key Member

Ahead of its sixth season premiere next summer, ABC has officially renewed Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a 13-episode seventh season, set to air in Summer 2020.

The early pickup is a surprise, to say the least, as the show's fifth season ended the 2017/2018 television year as the network's least-watched drama with just over 2 million total viewers and among the lowest-rated with a measly 0.5 rating. However, while the Live+ same day ratings have been exceedingly poor, the series has always been a strong on-demand performer with delayed viewing, which probably helped its cause.

Deadline adds that the early renewal is linked to the upcoming cast options and that ordering a seventh season this early - along with picking up options for their actors - would allow the network to film both the sixth and seventh seasons back-to-back, significantly reducing costs in the process.

Additionally, it appears that Clark Gregg (Captain Marvel) is no longer listed as a cast member, which is possibly just subterfuge to hide the potential second revival of his fan-favorite character Phil Coulson. Regardless, Gregg has already been confirmed to return as a director in season six, so his time with the show, whether on-screen or off-, is likely far from over.

ABC PICKS UP ‘MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.’ FOR A SEVENTH SEASON

Season 6 Set to Air in Summer 2019

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has been given a Season 7 order, Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, announced today.

"Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television for ABC.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O’Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. features:
Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson
Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May
Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson/Quake
Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz
Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons
Henry Simmons as Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie
Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez

This is FANTASTIC news. The best comic book show on television renewed for another season, even before we got season 6. Wow, that says a lot of great stuff about the upcoming season if they renewed the show this early on. And now we can officially add SHIELD to the list of MCU releases in 2020.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I had a gif ready to post in this article, and another one as back-up should someone already have posted the other. You have used both of them... in the very first comment. (•_•)

@HeavyMetal4Life - Booyah! My favorite show on the TV. My thinking, and I could be wrong here, is that SHIELD gets rehabbed in A4 and they will no longer be an underground thing. they can then become more of what the first season was, which was find weird stuff and check it out. My hope is that they use the show to introduce various characters from the Marvel Universe that can then be mined for series on Live+. The Ghost Rider plot was awesome. More stuff like that please!

@Goldboink - yeah, its certainly possible. They returned to the public spotlight in season 4, but that all collapsed when Aida took over and then SHIELD was sent to the future. Though the end of season 5 with Mack as the director of SHIELD seemed to indicate they were emerging from the shadows again. BUT we all know A4 is going to change the landscape.

Would love to have Ghost Rider get his own show, been clamoring for that for a while. Its unfortunate that the relationship between Netflix and Marvel has fallen apart, because there were serious talks with Gabriel Luna about a Ghost Rider spinoff show, and things pointed towards that being discussed on Netflix.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I just don't think Netflix has done a good job. I know people like it but I thought the production values were weak, the stories were kind of slow and the acting somewhat subpar. My thinking is that all of that stuff will go to Live+. Netflix will almost certainly not be getting any new properties.

@Goldboink - well Daredevil was outstanding. It and SHIELD are top tier comic book shows. I also thought Punisher s1 and Luke Cage s2 were great. Everything else though had issues.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yeah, this update was a pleasant surprise.

You can count me on the hype-train with this renewal! Now let's hope that we eventually get a crossover because I want to see Quake interacting (and/or possibly working) with The Avengers.

This is excellent news =D

@HeavyMetal4Life - Oooh, I like Quake's new suit. The subtle addition of color (Unless I JUST noticed it in the image) is a nice change. Also, speaking of color, I think her hair also has blue streaks.

Funny how synergistic the universe is... I don't know if they would ever get accepted, but I was working on characters I wanted to submit to Marvel (InHuman Twins), and the girl actually had blue streaks in her black hair, while her brother had red streaks. Very odd how the world works like that.

@Beerus - yeah its a pretty neat new look, the purple in the suit and hair is a nice reference to her look in the comics

Aw yeah! Now when season 6 ends with an obligatory cliffhanger, I won't have to freak out.

But seriously, this helps make up for Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

They should try to do a Heroes for Hire overreaching story arc for Season 7 if the are no positive developments for Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
