AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Natalia Cordova-Buckley Reveals Whether She'll Return To MCU As Yo-Yo (Exclusive)

Natalia Cordova-Buckley put herself on the map as Yo-Yo in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in an interview with us to discuss The Portrait, the actress reveals whether she plans to reprise the role...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ran for a total of 7 seasons on ABC and the show continues to boast a sizeable and loyal fanbase. We met many characters from the comics throughout those 136 episodes, including Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez.

A member of the Secret Warriors in the comics, the live-action speedster found romance with Mack and even ended up losing both her arms. Cordova-Buckley established Yo-Yo as a firm fan favourite during those ups and downs for the hero and with the Multiverse in play, the chances of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s cast making the leap to the MCU are now higher than ever.

We recently caught up with the actress to discuss her role in Saban Films' edge-of-your-seat new horror movie The Portrait. We'll bring you the full interview after the holidays (you can also watch it in the player below), but while we had Cordova-Buckley on the line, we asked if she's hoping to reprise her role as Yo-Yo in a future Marvel Studios project.

"I’m completely satisfied," she admitted. "Yo-Yo is, you know, I choke up every time I talk about Yo-Yo. She is profoundly special to me as a person and as an artist. I got the perfect role at the perfect time with her. She built me up and, being part of such a huge franchise like Marvel…my grandfather was a huge comic book fan. In all ways, it was really magical but, to be honest with you, it was the beginning of my career in the United States."

"It was perfect for that moment but I really want to focus on the kind of stuff that The Portrait is. I want to do a lot of indies. I want to do stuff that does craft work. I didn’t become an actress to be famous or make money and feel like, sometimes, those big franchise movies just turn into that. They can really lock you up as an actor with just those types of characters."

"I had five years of doing a superhero. That’s enough for me," Cordova-Buckley admits. "Someone else can take it over now. I’m profoundly grateful. It was perfect for me. It’s like that relationship you finish off beautifully and is everything it could have ever been."

So, the door is likely closed on Yo-Yo, though plenty of fans have argued that these characters should be left alone given what a perfect send-off Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s series finale was for them. There are, however, plenty of demands for Chloe Bennet to get another shot at Daisy Johnson/Quake!

In the wake of her husband's devastating accident, a devoted wife becomes consumed by a mysterious portrait that resembles him in his happier days. However, as her obsession intensifies, the painting starts to unleash terror upon her life, leading her to question whether it is possessed by a malevolent force or if she is losing her sanity. Caught between the haunting unknown and her own fears, she must confront her deepest fears and unravel the unsettling truth before it's too late.

The Portrait is now available on VOD and Digital platforms.

I doubt they'll bring back any characters/actors from AoS.
Quake probably had the best chance but that chance might have past after Secret Invasion coming out without her

@ChrisRed - Nothing is off the table until the multiverse arc is over, always chances some will turn up on Battleworld if nothing else.

Of all the comicbook hero epic names you can come up with they landed on Yo-Yo.
Would love to have been in that creative meeting:

Boss: We have this hot new heroin and we need to come up with an epic name. How 'bout ... Hank, you choose.
Hank waking up while sleeping during meeting: um, uhhhhhhh. Yo-Yo?
Boss: Hank, you're fired.

@lazlodaytona - "We have this hot new heroin and we need to come up with an epic name."

How about Fentanyl?

Seriously, I agree that Yo-Yo's a little on the nose. In the comics, her code name was Slingshot, which is a little better, I guess.

@lazlodaytona - Point of note a Yo-Yo was a deadly weapon long before the toy came along named after it.

Slingshot is better when she has full control of hers powers but early on when they were short duration on the show it fitted well enough for a nickname even if not the best Supe name.

@lazlodaytona - isn't yo-yo just her nickname like jon is for jonathan?

@bkmeijer1 - Yup, was a nickname Mack gave her so...

...they may have refenced an official codename during the last episode, unsure on that however.

bkmeijer1 - 12/25/2023, 8:55 AM
@Apophis71 - now that you mention Mack, think that was a nickname itself too.

Anyway, I think the codename was also mentioned in the Slingshot webseries that aired between seasons 3 and 4 I believe.

WAAY off topic:

For those of you who constantly rip on The Rock for being a self-involved diva and give him personal insults, check this out -

@lazlodaytona - he does do a lot of good things, but for some reason when he films himself he just doesn't strike me as genuine. I don't know how he is off-camera though, so maybe he genuinely is a good guy

Josh doing the hard investigative work because we all wanted to know if Yo-yo was coming back.

Meanwhile, Rohan killed it with his Russell interview

Pretty sure if Marvel called her she’s drop everything to play any character for a role in the MCU.

@slickrickdesigns - Not so sure if a long term gig again but if talking a one off appearance in Secret Wars I could see her saying yes to that.

No arms? She'd be perfect then! She could team up with Riri and Boom Boom to form the Babytalk Avengers, and they all go "Yo"! Yo yo" and "we were like, OMG!"
They all report back to Dum Dum Dugan.

It'd be a huge mistake to miss out the chance to bring her back and the rest of the characters for Secret Wars, a missed golden opportunity to capitalize on the sheer hype of finally connecting things more.

Didn't know she had a horror movie coming, they're not usually my thing though. But I see Virginia Madsen also is there, I remember her from Swamp Thing. (And Designated Survivor Season 1)

bkmeijer1 - 12/24/2023, 7:03 PM
@NinnesMBC - I think characters like Daisy, Mack and Yo-Yo could still show up as agents in an upcoming show with SWORD. All the other characters got satisfying endings though.

I think it would be fun to see the AoS characters show up in a What If. Also because I simply just don't see them show up in live-action, even though that would be fun

I totally forgot that show existed.

It was cool for a minute when they faked like it would actually tie into the movie universe and then it was all downhill from there.
