According to TV Line, Henry Simmons (NYPD Blue) has signed on to appear in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as agent Alphonso “Mac” Mackenzie, "a mechanic in his early 30s." In the Marvel comics Al Mackenzie is a veteran agent who found himself at odds with Nick Fury, and also had dealings with Jessica Jones so there's some crossover potential there when the Netflix series kicks off. Simmons joins other cast newbies Kyle MacLachlan as Skye’s father, Reed Diamond Daniel Whitehall, Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, Simon Kassianides as Bakshi and Lucy Lawless as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Isabel Hartly. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its sophomore season on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 9/8c.

so weird. Arrow announces guest stars / characters that I've heard of from the comics (e.g. Manhunter or Katanna)..I wish AoS would...Marvel has such a rich and as deep, or deeper, pool of characters to draw from, 'would be awesome to see them live.

LMAO, well at least they are pulling this Z-lister from the comic. I have yet to see a truly relevant character from Marvel show up on this show. Which says they are never going to.

--LMAO, "hit its stride". Riiiight. This show has NO recognizable characters from the movies or comics, keeps adding in a bunch of nobodies and Z-listers as if that's going to improve it. On top of that, the show was forced to tie into the movies, only to keep up appearances that it's part of the "Cinematic Universe".

In the meantime, you STILL have not seen a single pilot for the new season.

Face it, Marvel can do movies, but they can't do TV shows for shit. They should stand back and let DC show them how TV is done.

I predict a much better season for AoS. in fact, the last 5 episodes of its freshman season were pretty damn compelling and entertaining pieces of work. It didn't happen automatically but I have a feeling that Marvel is going to find its stride in the TV realm pretty soon. Daredevil is shaping up pretty strongly. AoS is going to be a much more focused and energized show.

I have a hard time betting against Marvel Studios doing anything at this point. if Kevin Fiege held a press conference and told us all that Marvel Studios team is branching into medical research to find cures for diseases, I'd be a bit optimistic.....

@ Deepee:

"I predict a much better season for AoS. in fact, the last 5 episodes of its freshman season were pretty damn compelling and entertaining pieces of work."

--If you are basing the success of this show upon the last 5 eps, then that's not much to go on. 5 good eps out of 22 is an abysmal failure.

"It didn't happen automatically but I have a feeling that Marvel is going to find its stride in the TV realm pretty soon. Daredevil is shaping up pretty strongly. AoS is going to be a much more focused and energized show."

--Regarding DD, I"m not sure what people are seeing, as an indication that it's "shaping up pretty strongly". We've not seen any footage, and it's taken nearly 2 years for them to even put the cast together. from the time that they first announced this "show". The movies get announced and go into production faster than that. Until we see that Cox guy in the actual DD uniform, then this "show" is basically an unknown.

As for AOShit, you have no proof (other than "the last 5 eps", that is) that it will improve. If it's still beholden to the movies, then it's gonna continue to have a hard time standing on its own.

Especially when casual viewers are going to continue to look for the movie experience from this TV show, which they haven't gotten yet.

"I have a hard time betting against Marvel Studios doing anything at this point. if Kevin Fiege held a press conference and told us all that Marvel Studios team is branching into medical research to find cures for diseases, I'd be a bit optimistic....."

--The problem with this approach, is that people have drunk the Marvel Kool-Aid. Besides, this isn't "Marvel Studios", this is "Marvel Television". 2 different branches of the same company.

That's like saying Marvel animation is the same as Marvel Studios (and we all know how bad Marvel's cartoons are). One part handles the movies, one part handles the cartoons, and one part handles the TV shows. Granted, the TV shows and the movies are "Supposed" to be connected, but the reality is they are only nominally connected.

The reality is, Marvel has had very little success with TV. Their only true success was the Hulk TV show, and that was from almost 40 years ago.

Too bad this guy isn't up for a role as an actual superhero.
He has all the makings of one..he's big, handsome, has a deep voice & is a good actor.
He could be a great Cyborg or John Stewart/GL for DC.
He could be be a superhero for Marvel but now he's only a normal agent guy. Missed Opportunity.

--The problem with this, is that Marvel doesn't really have access to most of those characters. And what little roster they do have access to, they are saving for the movies.

That's why, in 6 years worth of movies, we've only seen 4 major villains between all of them. And that's just for the movies. They have even less for the TV shows.

Meanwhile, DC is showing Ra's Al Ghul, the Rogues, the SS, Penguin, Riddler, and others in the first season (3rd for Arrow) of their shows.

@Samurai36

Or, you know, they could keep working with what they have. If things don't improve, then I will most certainly tune out.

Nobody is faulting WB for trying to start their own DCCU (only the way they are going about it), so why should Marvel not get a shot at improving the quality of their tv product?

"Or, you know, they could keep working with what they have. If things don't improve, then I will most certainly tune out."

--Okay, that's fair. But how long with that take? Another whole seasons? I don't get the unconditional benefit of the doubt when it comes to Marvel's TV product.

"Nobody is faulting WB for trying to start their own DCCU (only the way they are going about it), so why should Marvel not get a shot at improving the quality of their tv product?"

--Actually, people fault DC for the way they handle their movies all the time. And although I"m in DC's corner when it comes to that, the bias comes in when people assume Marvel is good at any/everything they do, when history has proven that NOT to be the case.

Sure they are good at the movies, but that's basically all they are good at. And the difference is, DC has done movies before (and some really good ones to boot), whereas Marvel's history with TV has been abysmal. Aside from the Hulk show, they had, what.... Mutant X? FAIL. Blade TV show? FAIL. And that's it, nothing else.

Further, the problem is that you'd think that with them leading with the movies, that the TV shows would be good by simple association. But there's a huge rift between the quality of their movies and their ONE TV show. Especially when the one guy that's behind this FAIL of a show, is also behind the so-called "Greatest Superhero Movie". Not to mention being behind critically acclaimed shows like Buffy, Angel, Firefly etc.

But AOShit is barely limping along? C'mon son. The show's premise was faulty from the start. It's like expecting to go to the moon, with a motorcycle with only one wheel.

It's like they are made by 2 difference companies, and technically they are. In the meantime, Flash's graphics alone are on cinema level. But Marvel can't even get the costumes for AOShit right..... i.e. that horrible Deathlok costume.

All I'm saying, is that people should have the same level of skepticism for Marvel's TV, that they seem to have for DC's movies.

And why,Samurai, you don't enjoy all the shows, assuming that CW and ABC perfectly set the whole week to don't stomp their feet each other, like a perfect lobby? The war is all in your empty head.

And AOS season 2 will be great.
