DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Star Charlie Cox Says Overhauled Series Brings Characters "Much Closer" To Netflix

Charlie Cox has said Daredevil: Born Again brings the show's characters more in line with Netflix's Daredevil and reflects on the "emotional" experience of reuniting with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson.

Last year, a creative overhaul saw The Punisher's Dario Scardapane replace Matt Corman and Chris Ord as Daredevil: Born Again's showrunner. Now, all signs point to the Marvel Studios series delivering the take on the Man Without Fear we've been waiting to see in the MCU.

TV Line caught up with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio at the Upfronts in New York yesterday and asked the former whether the retooling has brought Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk more in line with Netflix's Daredevil.

"Not exactly the same, but much closer," Cox teased. "And potentially much improved."

D'Onofrio added, "It’s hard to comment because I want to say so much about both the [Netflix] show and this show, and the change that happened, but in the end, the last few months of work we did was written beautifully and directed beautifully. Personally, I think it’s as intense as we’ve ever been."

Cox then shares his thoughts on reuniting with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, two actors who weren't expected to factor into the previous version of Daredevil: Born Again (while Foggy Nelson might have made a cameo, Karen Page was expected to be completely sidelined).

Calling it "pretty emotional" to share the screen with his Daredevil co-stars again, he added, "They are such a heartbeat of the show, and always have been." D'Onofrio similarly praised the "extremely talented" Ayelet Zurer who reprises her role as Vanessa Fisk after initially being replaced by Sandrine Holt.

Specific plot details haven't been revealed for Daredevil: Born Again, but we can piece together a rough idea from set photos and plot leaks. Matt Murdock will be defending White Tiger in court, The Kingpin is New York City Mayor, and The Punisher is hunting down corrupt cops using his logo.

Oh, and Bullseye is on the loose and finally in costume!

"It was pretty heartbreaking when [Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson] weren’t around initially," Cox said during a convention appearance earlier this year. "When we came back to filming, and they had made some changes, which you guys have probably read about and stuff, it was clear that Foggy and Karen are kind of the heartbeat of our show, and always were."

Starring Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Wilson Bethel, Jeremy Earl, and Ayelet Zurer, Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ next March.

@GeneralZod - There’s a woman at work that occasionally does a laugh that sounds a lot like Muttley. Makes me want to laugh and she’s not trying to do the laugh, either. She’s a lot younger and didn’t even know the cartoons.

@RolandD - That is hilarious. My GF/partner laughs like Muttley (when she tries to stay quiet) and I tell her so. She's in her 40s so she knows those old cartoons from reruns, including Muttley.

I thought some of the stuff with Karen was off the rails, and they were just including her in things they (the Netflix shows) shouldn’t have. But to not have either of them back and kill time off-screen was a dumb idea. I genuinely don’t know how you revived that show and thought that would be a good idea.

They went back to the drawing board and rectified the situation. I, for one, believe that’s a good thing, and I look forward to seeing the finished product.

@MyCoolYoung - I did like her bond with Frank even though they perhaps stretched the journalist angle

I do agree , not having atleast Foggy there was a dumb idea.

@MyCoolYoung - Agreed. I suspect them killing off the two was their way of explaining why they weren't going to be included, so they were like, "They're dead, so get over it."

@TheVisionary25 - There’s no way she should have taken over for Ben. She was no a trained journalist. Blog? Sure. Anyone can do that. I did really like her character though and having her, Foggy and Matt together is the way it should be. They all three had great chemistry together.

@TheVisionary25 - the frank stuff was easily her best material. It worked so well. Her challenging kingpin, not so much

@LSHF - if this was a continuation of the show, it just wasn’t smart to kill the heart of the show… offscreen no less

The show is in its 4th season so killing them off isn’t off the table and shouldn’t be. Daredevil has a lot of people he can interact with, but give us a compelling story arc as to why

@MyCoolYoung - oh man

Her scene with Fisk in S3 was one of my favorites , it just showed how driven she can be and especially since it happened fairly soon after her lowest point , it worked for me.

She was frustrated & desperate and did a move that wasn’t very well thought out as a last resort to get him which shows her flaws no material how well intention she may be.

@TheVisionary25 - that scene was good. Her killing people, threatening him, and doing all the snooping and accusing she did without any repercussions? The kingpin? That’s tough. Now I’ll admit I don’t remember everything or why there never was, but we’re talking 3 seasons after seeing someone commit suicide at the thought of Fisk coming after them

Good, the more they keep the grittier tone of the Netflix show the better.

I wonder how different they and the show actually were originally?.

I know that apparently original version was light on action & super heroics until Ep 4 and had more focus on the courtroom procedural aspect which doesn’t sound necessarily that bad to me but might have just not clicked in execution (or just not entirely turned out the way Marvel wanted).

Also in terms of characterization , both Matt & Fisk were a bit different in their prior appearances but still felt like they could be the same characters from the Netflix show to an extent to me (I haven’t seen Echo so don’t know how the latter was in that).

Regardless looking forward the show as it is now , perhaps my most anticipated officially announced MCU project at this moment.
