DAREDEVIL: Vincent D’Onofrio Finds Inspiration In Frank Miller's Kingpin

Vincent D’Onofrio starred in Men In Black and Full Metal Jacket, and his next venture is Marvel's upcoming Netflix television series, Daredevil. In a recent chat with Mens Journal he discusses where he finds his inspiration for The Kingpin (Wilson Fisk).

Marvel's Daredevil
television series, which will appear on Netflix, is currently filming in New York. It will be the first of many shows that Marvel and Netflix are teaming up. Anticipation is high. One of the most intriguing bits is Vincent D’Onofrio's return to the small screen. Many fans recognize the veteran actor from his numerous film roles, but he also made his mark on television as one of the two leads in  Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In Daredevil, D'Onofrio will be playing Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin. His character is described as "a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil."

Now that I have you in a good mood, let’s talk about Daredevil.
Filming has been great. I can’t really talk about specifics. Really. But I can tell you it’s all working. It’s all gritty. Everything is really impressive. They seem to know what they’re doing over at Marvel. I think ever since Downey and [Jon] Favreau did Iron Man and proved that comic book movies could be really cool they’ve just embraced that and taken it to the next level. They keep knocking it out of the park. This Netflix series that we’re filming right now, it’s going to be so amazing to watch. We’re doing these incredible, iconic scenes every single day. I have the best character; I play one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time. I haven’t had this much fun with a role for many years.

How much did you know about the character before signing on?
I knew a bit about Wilson Fisk. I had seen the movies. I saw other interpretations. But for this, they really wanted everything to be fresh. They’re operating like they have been doing their movies. I’m finding most of my inspiration for Fisk coming from the old artwork, artists like Frank Miller.

Your new friend Downey must have been very excited you got the role.
He was thrilled. My wife actually texted him a photo of me dressed as Kingpin and we got a very, very excited text back.

I look forward to the Iron Man versus Kingpin crossover happening very soon.
[Laughs.] It’s not impossible! They have all kind of plans. I think this Daredevil show is going to be the start of some very exciting crossovers.

Daredevil - Charlie Cox ("Boardwalk Empire") will play Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio ("Men In Black") will play Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin, Elden Henson (“Mighty Ducks”) will play Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") will play Karen Page and Rosario Dawson ("Sin City") will play a beautiful female character.

the more I hear about the show the more optimistic I become. At first I was worried this would be a lighter toned Waid Daredevil series but now it seems it will be grittier and darker and more Frank Miller-esque which is great

If you don't have Netflix, it's 8$ a month, the first month is free and you can have multiple users on the same account. It's going to be epic to watch all 13 episodes in a day. Once we get the date for when they drop, I'll be booking it off work.

Who's butt do you kiss? Or are you one of those delusional "neutral" people?

One little after credits scene in IRON MAN changed the CBM game forever and Marvel has been on a roll ever since.

Really looking forward to this series leading into THE DEFENDERS.

I think the first two X-Men and Spider-Man films deserve more credit, they were the ones that revitalized the whole genre after B&R (Blade did so as well as I guess, but Blade's success is nothing compared to X-Men and Spider-Man).

I'd die if they somehow found a way to let RDJ cameo in the DD show. I'm not quite sure how it would go down, but something like that would be to die for.

He's talking about how Marvel's success with Iron Man helped Marvel to move forward, he wasn't talking about the entire industry and every CBM, he was talking about Marvel as a company and the MCU
