WHAT IF...? Executive Producer Confirms Season 2 Plans And Teases Captain Carter's Huge MCU Future

Marvel Studios held a virtual press conference for What If...? yesterday, and ComicBookMovie.com was on hand to bring you plenty of exciting highlights from the global event.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige may not have been present, but executive producer Brad Winderbaum (a Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran) was there to drop some hints about the future of this animated series. While ten episodes will be released on Disney+ this year, plans are already in place for a second season, and it seems Captain Carter will play a key role!

"We realized early on in development as we were starting to get [AC Bradley's] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important," he started. "Not more important than the rest, but [one who] had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter."

"And we realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure," Winderbaum added.

Despite the fact that he'd later describe What If...? as an "anthology series," it's clear there are bigger plans in place for Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, especially if she ends up developing a relationship with The Watcher (who, despite only being there to observe, has frequently interfered in the comic books).

Something tells us this is going to tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but even if an appearance is off the table there, we wouldn't be shocked if there are some live-action plans.

What If...? premieres on Disney+ on August 11.

It is a cool way to have Hayley Atwell still in the MCU. Plus I'm sure she loves it cause A) it's only voice work at least for now. And B) If it does work its way to live action she now gets to play the ultra loved badass which I'm sure is a big incentive.

Can't wait for what if. Even if honestly since it was first announced I've lost some of that hype

@Mrcool210 - Will Peggy become the moral compass of the MCU going forward like Steve was to date?!?

I was kinda expecting every season to adapt 10 different movies, but I guess we're gonna get some continuation.

Can even see some character get full season spin-offs, depending on how popular they are. Like Captain Carter (maybe even a live-action version).

@Waddles - Hottest woman on the planet, IMO. I've met her at a WW Con and she's just amazing in every way.

My prediction for this show is hat at first we have isolated stories
like

Captain Carter
Starlord T'Challa
Dr. Strange Supreme
Iron man and Killmonger
What if Loki won

and then in the second half they start to crossover, because the multiverse is obviously already opened, as of the fact that the show even exists

and from there on out we will get a Civil War-esk "midseason event" with the zombie stuff but the ultimate villain of the show will turn out to be Ultron who won in his universe and assembled the Infinity Stones, plus he has the body of the Vision as well

--> This would give Ultron some sort of redemption for his rather uneventful outing in the movies.

@SpaceAgent - I wouldn't be surprised if it is Ultron-Vision (Ultrion?) the Guardians of the Multiverse are gonna have to team up against.

Think the zombie stuff might be seperate, but I can see it be based on Civil War (specifically the chemical agent in Lagos part from the opening).

@bkmeijer - The chemical Lagos stuff tying in with Marvel zombies goes back to 2015 when they weren't sure if RDJ would do Civil War and the backup idea for the 3rd Captain America movie was a version of Marvel Zombies.

...I think.

@SpaceAgent - I do kinda hope it has to do with that, since I'm still not sure who Rumlow was working for and I kinda wanna know (could be Zemo, because Rumlow does mention Bucky)

So the What If... here can be what if RDJ didn't sign on for Civil War

I would be very ok if they brought her into live action as Captain Britain.

This show will be great if they keep the stories stand-alone like the comic series. We already have far too much interconnectedness (especially involving the multiverse) with almost every other MCU property. I fear this (the multiverse) is a Pandora’s Box they never should have opened.

@Waddles - Do you think Marvel/Disney recognize the irony?

A live action Captain Carter series on Disney+ would be amazing! But if its animated that will be cool too.
