WHAT IF...? Executive Producer Confirms The Series Is Every Bit As Important To Wider MCU Plans As LOKI

What If...? executive producer Brad Winderbaum has addressed how the animated series fits into the continuity of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe and says there's a reason it's coming after Loki...

In the comic book version of the Marvel Universe, the "What If?" stories are very much standalone and have no sort of impact on what's going on in the main continuity. Fans have suspected that might be the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, especially as What If...? is an animated show.

However, during yesterday's global press conference for the series - which ComicBookMovie.com was in attendance for - executive producer Brad Winderbaum cleared up the show's place in the canon.

"It’s no coincidence that the show picks up right after Loki," he said, referring to the creation of the Multiverse in that show's season finale. "The Multiverse has erupted in every possible direction. What if…? gives us a chance to explore that."

"I think that without going into great detail, I can tell you that What if…? as a project, as a story that exists in the MCU, is as important as any other and is woven into that tapestry," Winderbaum concluded, making it clear that this isn't a show fans of this shared world should consider skipping.

There have been a lot of rumours about characters from What If...? appearing in live-action, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a likely destination for at least some of them.

However, with the God of Mischief stranded in an alternate timeline following the events of Loki, it's easy enough to imagine him also crossing paths with the Variants we meet in this show. Time will tell on that front, but it's clear What If...? is going to take us to some crazy, unexpected places.

What If...? premieres on Disney+ on August 11.

Eh... Loki is not really important to the wider MCU.

The event that caused the multiverse was presumably in WandaVision. The development with Kang will be rehashed to explain Kang whenever he shows up again. Even the idea of the MCU having no free will prior damages the nature of every decision made.

@Scarilian -
Wait how did the events in WandaVision exactly cause the multiverse?

We saw it in Loki , the show was based around that.
Am I missing something ? 🤔

@MisterDoctor217 - I think this is the theory that when Wanda becomes Scarlet Witch that it ran concurrently with Loki, so her transformation is the point He Who Remains could not see past although none of that is confirmed as far as i know

Hmm I don’t buy into that theory. I mean I know we all expected it to happen in WandaVision and it was kinda disappointing it didn’t, but honestly I don’t think they’ll recton it in DS2 and say “hey so Wanda broke the multiverse”. It wouldn’t make much sense.

@MisterDoctor217 - for me its a cute idea that could've worked but like you it doesn't tie up for me but i dont think its the case that she broke the universe but that it was just the point he could no longer see past but yeah we were all so set on Wanda breaking the multiverse that people are doing mental gymnastics to make it fit, i suppose we'll just have to wait and see

Yeah I think we all expected her to be linked to the multiverse breaking open or her having some influence over it , but as things keep leaking I’m thinking she’ll actually won’t have much to do with it all, and it’s going to be Loki and America Chavez the ones who’ll be linked to it.
Wanda will be in the movie but my theory is her storyline will involve looking for her kids and helping Doctor Strange.
I don’t think she’ll be one of the causes or influencers over the multiverse 🤔

@MisterDoctor217 - I think it might hinge on who the bad guy is, i mean at the moment i can't see a central villain in that movie, if they have kept that under wraps and there is one then they might be linked to her and they will have to address not just the multiverse but the Darkhold is in play now as well

Oh yes ! I keep forgetting about the Darkhold ! Maybe Mordo is the one linked to her storyline and he’s looking for the book and traces it down to her. 🤔

@MisterDoctor217 - Well if she's a sorcerer now the she should fall right into his sights on his mission but i imagine she will be too powerful for him, maybe she kills Mordo and Strange then realises he needs to stop her? so many options, im really looking forward to DS2

Yes maybe she kills him by accident and Strange sees her as a threat! Hopefully they go down that path of her not being fully good but also not fully bad.
I don’t want her to be on his side right away lol

@MisterDoctor217 - Me too, id like to see exactly as you say but then when Strange beats her they release a larger threat on the more occult side of things, i really want to see more of the darker villains Marvel has and with Moon Knight and Blade coming they really need to start setting up that side of things

Yes I agree we need more darker, obscure villains ! And doctor strange is a Perfect movie to introduce them.

At this point I'm so far in, I watch every new Marvel project that comes out anyway, but I can see how it is becoming harder and harder for new audiences to get into the MCU. Especially if they say about everything that comes out it is very important.

At the beginning of this year it was still doable, but I think I wouldn't be wrong Marvel Studios is releasing the same (if not more) hours of content this year alone than the entire Infinity Saga combined.
