We're still waiting for a new What If? trailer, not to mention an official premiere date that's a little more specific than just "August." However, thanks to The Illuminerdi, we do have a few minor details on what Marvel Studios has planned for an episode retelling the events of Captain America: The First Avenger.
We know that Peggy Carter will take the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers, and the site claims that happens after the original Captain America suffers an "undisclosed injury." Rogers still finds a way to fight HYDRA, though, as he dons an early Iron Man armour that's named the "Hydra Stomper."
There have already been rumblings that Howard Stark will use the Tesseract to power the suit, and in this timeline, he manages to beat his son to creating the Iron Man armour by a few decades.
Interestingly, the site - and some recent merchandise - have confirmed that Peggy will be known as Captain Carter in this What If? episode.
That's intriguing, because she's clearly flying the UK's flag in the series, and it almost feels like Marvel Studios might be saving that "Captain Britain" title for a different character. Whether that's Brian Braddock or another hero remains to be seen, but it's also possible Peggy will choose to make use of that moniker by the time this story wraps up.
A synopsis for the show was shared during last year's Disney Investor Day, revealing: "'What If…?' flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways."
"Coming to Disney+ in summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU," it continues, "featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews; Ashley Bradley is head writer."
What If? premieres sometime on Disney+ this August.
