Last week, Jeff Goldblum talked about returning as The Grandmaster in
What If? and indicated that his episode of the animated series would include Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU return as Iron Man.
Now, though,
The Wrap has revealed that
"an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that Goldblum misspoke and Downey will not be appearing." Honestly, this does make sense as it's hard to believe the actor would return to the role so soon after retiring as Tony Stark.
Steve Rogers is going to be part of the Peggy Carter/Captain Britain episode but we've heard nothing about Chris Evans reprising the role so it's now hard not to wonder whether soundalikes will be used for supporting players. That somewhat defeats the purpose of enlisting an all-star cast, of course, but it's inevitable that not everyone will be willing/able to lend their voices to the show.
We'll have to wait and see but, for now, it seems we can forget about Downey Jr. appearing in
What If? and that's bound to disappoint fans who were excited about what he'll bring to the table.
!UPDATE!
CBM has been contacted by Robert Downey Jr.'s representatives and they have clarified that he will NOT be voicing or appearing in the series.
