Netflix has gained a reputation for cancelling shows before they've even had a chance to hit their stride, and the streamer has now axed popular period sci-fi drama, 1899.

The show, from Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, premiered on November 17, and followed a group of European emigrants travelling from Southampton, UK on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City.

While not quite as well-received as Dark, the show garnered generally positive reviews, and viewers were looking forward to finding out how the story was going to continue after the mind-bending season finale.

Spoilers ahead.

The final episode concludes with a huge twist, as it's revealed that the passengers are in some kind of simulation, and the year is actually 2099.

No reason was given for the cancellation, but co-creator Baran bo Odar took to Instagram to express his disappointment.

Had you guys been watching 1899? How do you feel about the show's cancellation? Drop us a comment down below.

Does Netflix still save canceled shows?

I wonder if they would ever save one of their own canceled shows.

They can't go to another network or streaming site?

I read this show was accused of plagiarizing a Brazilian comic titled Black Silence. The similarities seem scant to me though.

This was the last straw in my netflix subscription. I needed to cut some streaming services and i was also deciding between:

(1) Apple+
(2) HBO Max

Im still going to cancel Max, but (it seems that) every Netflix's shows that I enjoy they cancel and/or destroy (see Witcher: Blood Origins).

Ill sign back up for Max and when Got returns but at this point I think Disney+ is the only untouchable in our house (have kids).

Anyway - hope 1899 gets picked up elsewhere... but doubted.

We really don't have to add the addendum "ending the show on a major cliffhanger" if Netflix cancels a show. Literally every single season of every show throws a cliff hanger/ spoiler for the next season to come to hook you in so you come back.

Every. Single. Netflix. Show.

This one is kind of shocking!

Dark was so good.

This one ended really well... it didn't look cheap, but with filming on the volume surely they were able to keep cost down?

I loved the international casting here.... hopefully the reconsider and do a wrap up movie or something like Sense8.
