Netflix has gained a reputation for cancelling shows before they've even had a chance to hit their stride, and the streamer has now axed popular period sci-fi drama, 1899.

The show, from Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, premiered on November 17, and followed a group of European emigrants travelling from Southampton, UK on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City.

While not quite as well-received as Dark, the show garnered generally positive reviews, and viewers were looking forward to finding out how the story was going to continue after the mind-bending season finale.

Spoilers ahead.

The final episode concludes with a huge twist, as it's revealed that the passengers are in some kind of simulation, and the year is actually 2099.

No reason was given for the cancellation, but co-creator Baran bo Odar took to Instagram to express his disappointment.

Had you guys been watching 1899? How do you feel about the show's cancellation? Drop us a comment down below.
