Steven Yeun's new Netflix family is filling out, and one of its members has played his kid before. Netflix announced on October 21 that Sabine Grace, Logan Kim, Marin Ireland and Intae Kim have joined PAGANS, the horror-tinged family series from Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer.
Yeun stars as Gus, a widowed father raising his two children alone after his wife's death. According to Netflix's Tudum announcement, "What starts as a strained father-daughter relationship soon evolves into something far more sinister."
Meet the Family
Sabine Grace makes her television debut as Alice, whom Netflix calls "the family's black sheep." Alice keeps people at a distance and spends most of her time inside her own head. Horror fans know the type.
Logan Kim plays Nate, Alice's older brother. Netflix describes him as "well-liked and dependable," a kid who "often feels like an afterthought at home" next to his younger sister.
Kim has been Yeun's on-screen son before, in a roundabout way. On AMC's The Walking Dead: Dead City, he played Hershel Rhee, the son of Maggie and Yeun's Walking Dead character, Glenn. Kim is also known as Podcast from Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Marin Ireland plays Janelle, "a single mom doing her best to connect with her strong-willed 14-year-old daughter, Jade." Ireland knows her way around a troubled household on screen, with The Empty Man, The Dark and the Wicked and The Boogeyman on her résumé. Netflix's announcement highlights her work in Dope Thief and His & Hers.
Intae Kim (Best Medicine, Succession) plays Casey, Gus's younger brother. Per Netflix, Casey "shows up when his family needs a hand, even if no one says thank you."
Equal Parts Scary and Funny
Netflix bills PAGANS as "equal parts emotional, horrifying, and humorous." The streamer's description doesn't pull punches about the target: "Pagans is a show that unearths all our darkest thoughts about family."
Netflix hasn't said whether the scares are supernatural, psychological or some of each. Trade coverage of the August announcement called it a supernatural drama, but the official description keeps its cards close, and nobody has explained the title yet.
Who's Behind It
Zetumer created FX's Say Nothing, which Netflix notes is a Peabody Award winner, and wrote the 2014 RoboCop remake. He executive produces PAGANS alongside Yeun, Drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Jonathan van Tulleken, Erica Kay and Christina Oh.
Netflix revealed the project in August with Yeun attached to star and executive produce. According to TV Insider, Zetumer's script drew more than a dozen bidders before Netflix won it with a straight-to-series order.
The series reunites Yeun with Netflix after BEEF, which won him an Emmy, and this year's The Rip. His film résumé includes Minari, which earned him an Oscar nomination, and Jordan Peele's Nope.
What's Next
Netflix hasn't announced an episode count or a premiere date. "There's no release date yet," the Tudum post says, as PAGANS enters production. The streamer hasn't said when fans will get a first look at Gus and his family.
