The Star Wars sequel trilogy isn't quite as awful as some would have you believe, but it did ultimately underwhelm. Objectively speaking, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were well-made movies, but The Rise of Skywalker proved to be a massively disappointing finale.
Not helping matters was the portrayal of Luke Skywalker - who only appeared fully in one of the three movies - and the fact he, Han Solo, and Princess Leia never actually shared the screen at the same time.
It's no wonder really that fans have embraced Disney+'s post-Return of the Jedi offerings and between The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, those are starting to feel like what the sequels should have been. After Ahsoka, Dave Filoni will helm a Star Wars movie and, if that lives up to expectations, the franchise's redemption may beckon.
Rumoured to be titled Heir to the Empire, the project is expected to bring together all these streaming stories for an epic big screen crossover. What that will ultimately look like remains to be seen, but if this fan-made poster (first shared on SFFGazette.com) is any sort of indication...it's going to be nothing short of epic.
Luke and Leia are front and centre with lightsabers in hand, while the supporting cast includes everyone from Ahsoka Tano to Han Solo to Ezra Bridger and Din Djarin. Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Thrawn looms large. We'd probably cut a few characters (mostly from The Book of Boba Fett) but this is still a solid effort.
We expect the stage to be set for this Star Wars movie in Tuesday's Ahsoka finale and wouldn't be shocked if the series ends on an open-ended note.
Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, the series stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.
Ahsoka was written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Directors include Filoni, Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Rick Famuyiwa.
The season finale of Ahsoka will premiere on Disney+ this Tuesday.
