During the High Republic panel at Star Wars Celebration, we got some exciting casting news for one of the most anticipated upcoming Disney+ Star Wars show, The Acolyte.

Russian Doll actress Rebecca Henderson will play Star Wars: The High Republic character Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh.

In the books, Vern was one of the youngest ever Jedi, and served as Padawan to Stellan Gios. The Mirialan warrior was completely devoted to the Jedi Order, but struggled to fit in with the adults while also setting a good example for the younger force-wielders.

Henderson will play a much older take on the character, and, as you can see from the image below, she'll be sporting a very different look.

Henderson joins previously announced cast members Amandla Stenberg, Jodie Turner-Smith, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Chewie actor Joonas Suotamo is also on board as a Wookiee Jedi Master.

The Acolyte is set during the High Republic era, and was pitched as “Frozen meets Kill Bill." This will be the first time any Star Wars story will be told from the perspective of the Sith, as they attempt to usurp the Jedi at their peak.

The series is set to release in 2024.

This particular show is Kathleen's baby... so i expect it to be mostly awful.

@McMurdo - Like I expect this fandom to be mostly awful at this point.

@McMurdo - I agree that Lucasfilm should have new leadership but it's interesting like some people only associate the negative stuff to her while she gets no credit for the successful projects, she is the president of the studio, she is the one that greenlit things like Rogue One, Mandalorian, Andor, the animated series, both the good and the bad needs her approval.

@Drace24 - the fandom is the only good thing about SW in a post modern Disney era. Sure there are shit heads in all fandoms. But the response to TLJ via Solo's box office was a beautiful sight to see. Especially with Mark Hamill himself leading the charge. It's the ST/TLJ stans who are truly awful. People who blame the SW fandom for the shitshow state that the film side of LFL is currently in....those people are completely out of touch.

As Han once said, "delusions of grandeur".

@McMurdo - I’m a fan of all things Star Wars. Yeah the last trilogy wasn’t great but it had its moments. Star Wars isn’t dead it’s just trying to find its place without the skywalker family at the center of it all. I like the last Jedi but I also think most Star Wars is enjoyable. There’s something there for everyone. Andor may not be suitable for my 2 year old but I’m excited to show her the new Disney junior show as an intro into this galaxy.
You may not be excited for the acolyte but somebody else out there may and that’s fine. Not every thing done in this universe is made just for you and only you. You can have your opinion but it doesn’t mean that somebody else’s opinion is wrong because they don’t bend to what you like.

McMurdo - 4/9/2023, 12:17 PM
@Antitrollpatrol - except it hasn't tried to find its place outside the Skywalker saga has it? They've rehashed and rehashed the same Empire based conflict ad nauseum. Mando still has all the OT iconography.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 4/9/2023, 12:19 PM
@Urubrodi - that's because the TV side is Favreau and Filonis baby. She's not nearly as hands on with the Filoni/Fav-verse as she was with the ST and as she is with the Acolyte.

The Mando-verse basically is SW right now. And so Fav And Filoni get all the credit, as they should. The best thing she did was give Filoni more power.

She's the president and it's on her that there is a mass exodus of creative talent walking away from SW projects year after year.

She receives blame because the ST was her baby. She hired JJ. She let Rian make his botched abortion. Etc etc etc. No one argues she doesn't sign off on the Filoni Fav content. She supposedly got those two in a room together initially so she did one thing right at least. But TFA to TRoS....that's a billion dollar difference. That means something. And that's on her. Period.

@McMurdo - I fully expect it to be the "Wokeolyte"
Drace24
Drace24 - 4/9/2023, 3:14 PM
@McMurdo - Yeah, I'm sure you love the instant affirmation to all your grievances from the fandom. That seems to be all it's doing. Complaining. Constantly and about everything. Nothing ever seems to petty or childish for the purists to make a huge fuss about. All they talk about is how this shit, that is shit, good stuff bad, old stuff good and waging bottomfeeding smear campaigns against seemingly everyone who ever made a Star Wars movie.

And let's cut the "Muh, it's Disney's fault!" bullshit. I've been a Star Wars fan for over 20 years now, way before the acquisition, and I don't even know this fandom any other way. I've been bullied of fansites when I was like 11 just for liking Phantom Menace. Really seems like the fandom is full of people who get off by ruining Star Wars for as many people as possible. Not to mention the many people whose lives they literally ruined. Ahmed Best, Jake Lloyd, Kelly-Marie Tran, John Boyega, Moses Ingram...

I have no idea how a franchise that is all about rejecting hate and embracing love could attract so many sad losers, but they are the only ones who truly ruin Star Wars. Literally. There was one time when a filmmaker tried to appease the angry Sith Lords of the internet and realize all their demands. And the result was Rise of Skywalker.
Good job, guys! Thumbs up!

But I am so sorry that some people who actually like the things they are a fan of point this out to you. Of course, from your perspective, the people who did NOT send Ryan Johnson death threats are the problem.

MrDandy
MrDandy - 4/9/2023, 10:53 AM
Seriously? As someone following the High Republic content Vernestrah is one of the worst characters. A complete power fantasy self-insert by the author

She is a Jedi who is so great she was a full knight before most people are padawans. She is training a padawan older than she is. She is a genius loved by everyone and those who don’t love her are just unfairly jealous of how great she is. She has a special never-before-seen force power called “hyperspace vision” and invented her own type of lightsaber called a force whip (again, as a child).

Some people call Rey a Mary Sue but Vernestrah is a TEXTBOOK Mary Sue.
Drace24
Drace24 - 4/9/2023, 11:07 AM
@MrDandy - So? She's a prodigy. This franchise is full of prodigies, chosen ones, tech geniuses and generally characters who are just the best at whatever it is they do.

At this point the term "Mary Sue" has completely lost all meaning.

@Drace24 - you do know she is in the books and comics targeted at adults too, right. And the lead of one of the YA books….

She is certainly not just in the junior readers.

And even then that’s no excuse for badly written characters.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 4/9/2023, 5:16 PM
@Drace24 - but I’ll be honest. I don’t think you actually have read them. I think you are literally forming an opinion based on nothing. Which about checks out for the internet.

Vernestra Rwoh had hair.

I hope there´s an in-universe reason for her being bald, because if not it´s a very unnecessary change.
Drace24
Drace24 - 4/9/2023, 11:01 AM
@DiegoMD - And Luke didn't have a beard when he was younger. Did that need to have an explanation, too? Maybe she just likes it better this way.
