Disney CEO Acknowledges The Mandalorian And Grogu Box Office Disappointment - But It Was A Hit In One Way

Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro has acknowledged that Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu didn't live up to expectations at the box office, but suggests toys and theme park tickets made up for it.

Star Wars fans had high hopes for The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, whether it was a teaser trailer that drew comparisons to just another episode of The Mandalorian or a Super Bowl TV spot that proved a swing and a miss for Lucasfilm, it became clear early on that the movie wasn't connecting.

Ultimately, that was proven by the movie making only $345.2 million at the global box office. That made The Mandalorian follow-up the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie to date, despite largely positive reviews from fans and critics.

During a recent earnings call, new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro acknowledged (via SFFGazette.com) that the movie underperformed. However, he pointed to The Mandalorian and Grogu being a win for the company...in terms of toy sales and theme park attendance.

"Even when our franchise films don’t meet our box office expectations, as with The Mandalorian and Grogu and the live-action Moana, our investments in these core properties fuel other parts of our company," D'Amaro told investors. "The Mandalorian and Grogu drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise."

"[It] drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and led to significant engagement in gaming as well," he continued. "And the live-action Moana is expected to be a strong title on Disney+, building on the success of the original film, which is one of the most-streamed movies of all time."

A letter sent to Disney shareholders added, "While audience scores for both Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and fiscal Q4’s live-action Moana have been strong, both films underperformed our box office expectations. Even so, these franchise investments contributed to value creation beyond their theatrical releases."

Disney CFO Hugh Johnston doubled down on that narrative by stating, "Look, theatrical performance is important to us, of course, and we certainly aspire to deliver consistent financial results for our films, but the nature of the film industry is such that it is more of a portfolio game. The good news for us is our diversified business helps us basically cover the volatility that comes out of the film business."

What wasn't revealed is whether toys and theme park tickets were enough to make up for the money The Mandalorian and Grogu lost in theaters. It seems doubtful and may be hard to quantify, regardless.

It will also be telling to see what comes next for The Mandalorian. While a big-screen sequel seems unlikely, could we get Season 4 on Disney+? That's the hope among fans of Din Djarin and The Child, though the studio does appear to be moving away from pricey streaming series.

Now, all eyes will be on Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. They'll reunite for Marvel Studios' Ghost Rider, and we'll soon find out whether fans are interested in a fully original Star Wars story (the movie is set after The Rise of Skywalker).

"The Mandalorian and Grogu is a fun, pulpy reminder that Star Wars doesn’t need to grow up; it just needs to be entertaining," we said in our review this past May. "Jon Favreau's action-packed love letter delivers exactly the crowd-pleasing adventure fans have been craving."

The Mandalorian and Grogu is now available on Digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango, on July 21, and on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on August 25.

Its all about the merch & theme park revenue.

Just say it was a disappointment. No need to bring in jiu-jitsu accounting when the writing is clear as FUK on the wall. Star Wars is not as popular as it used to be. If it's already expensive as hell to go the movie theater, what in the right mind makes you believe "Hey, they're not watching the movie, BUT MAN THEY WENT TO CHECK OUT THE NEW STAR WARS RIDE AT DISNEY WORLD! They spent $500 to experience Star Wars rather than just going to the theater and watching it! MAN! PROFIT!"

No one even saw the movie, so they would rather buy the Grogu toy, or go to the theme park, or spend on a costume skin on Fortnite than watch YOUR movie? GEE...WHAT A SUCCESS 🙄🙄

Also drove up WHAT sales for the theme parks again? How can they be going specifically over to only Star Wars areas, when Disney has been empty this year?

@Irregular - I understand what youre saying but when youre trying to tell the full story especially when it comes to IP that extends beyind tbe silver screen, you would be remiss not to mention if a movie (failed or successful) drove sales to other revenue streams related to the property

A CFO would probably lose his job if he didnt tell the "full story"
Irregular
Irregular - 8/6/2026, 7:12 AM
@Vigor - Yeah you tell the full story if there is indeed success, but saying "Yeah no one went to go see the movie but they sure as hell went to the theme park and bought another Grogu toy for the 11th time" like that never happened. If customers didn't buy a Grogu toy or any merch about Grogu when he first became a fad, then they perhaps never will at this point.

And these theme park prices are still outrageous, when clearly people have been posting left and right about how empty the parks have been. Are they saying they acquired new guests? No. Are they saying they increased revenue? Sure but doesn't mean it was because of the refit for Star Wars due to Mandalorian. I'm sure the people who make over $130K probably will have the Disney passes to go, but THAT'S IT...not really anyone else can afford to go...so what are they talking about?

So I get they want this "full story" but they are better off having a private shareholder meeting about it and not acknowledging it publicly on an "earnings call" in so much detail. You don't need to discuss that part on an earnings call, hell companies don't really "need" an earnings call. It's not against the law to not have one. I know they had a 3% growth in revenue but I guarantee for an entire quarter was made from people who already had passes and not any guests. Meaning the experience was already paid for or being paid monthly.

@Vigor - A CFO would lose his job if he failed to report on a ~silver lining~ after reporting on a clear failure. There’s literally never been a bad CFO report that didn’t get followed up with “BUT, ~insert silver lining here~ was a success…”

But I digress

What they failed to mention in that blanket statement is that they raised merchandise / food / park experiences et al roughly 3% year over year, in addition to a 6% increase for “targeted summer markups”…All those successful increases were inclusive of a nearly 10% price hike across the board, that they apparently forgot to highlight.

Thats exactly how corporate speak ~honestly~ reports on negatives

As another example, theme park attendance specific revenue was reported as being up 3% with expected growth through next summer…but they felt the need to gloss over the fact that they’d already raised ticket prices 5% year over year, and expected to raise them as much as 10% by next year…I can guarantee that you if we revisit this topic exactly one year from now, Disney will have released a report touting their theme parks business being a success by way of a 10-ish % increase in attendance revenue year over year.

This unfortunately has been one of my biggest concerns about Grogu since S1E1.

@Chuck420Taylor - hasn’t merchandising always been a big aspect of the SW franchise?.

Hell , Lucas fought to have those rights back in the day and is how he made alot of his money.
Chuck420Taylor
Chuck420Taylor - 8/6/2026, 7:07 AM
@TheVisionary25 - you are correct indeed. Hell i wont lie plenty of people only know Grogu as Baby Yoda still. They are not SW fans by a long shot but simply pop culture groupies. Mando def helped SW stay on the general audiences mind but only cause it starred a cute 'baby alien.'
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/6/2026, 7:23 AM
@Chuck420Taylor - that’s true aswell.

Even then , retail being a big factor in SW’s success isn’t a new thing and has been going on since the original trilogy.

Chuck420Taylor - 8/6/2026, 8:15 AM
@TheVisionary25 - tis also true. But we can all see that Grogu turned it up for them. In the sequel trilogy the cute thing to push was BB8. Definitely a big jump in imho.

This is a seperate tangent but if Disney wants us to feel for cutesy aliens they should try to replicate PoTA and give us a 'real' alien.

@Chuck420Taylor - we kinda have that with Zeb and Rotta in this or do you mean a practical main alien character?.

@TheVisionary25 - something non humanoid. Star Wars is im a galaxy super far but most their aliens still feel so human. The Hutts count i guess.

I know people hate to hear this but it’s just the truth. Disney has been the number one box office studio for like 9 of the last 10 years and yet despite being top dog there box office revenue only accounts for like 10% of their total revenue. These giant media companies usually aren’t actually in the business people think they are in.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/6/2026, 7:22 AM
Well , good for Disney i guess that they seemed to cover the underperformance of The Mandalorian & Grogu in other areas which is how it tends to be with these big budget IP’s atleast…

However , i care infinitely more about whether we will see these characters again or not whether it be in a tv show or another movie which i hope we do sooner then later.

I did watch the movie finally and thought it was a decent & enjoyable pulpy adventure that had fun action , humor and even some heart in regards to the dynamic and growth of Din & Grogu’s relationship albeit in a rather thin story.

I will say that I definitely understand the complaints of this feeling like a compilation of episodes stitched together since there isn’t much in it that makes me think that this needed to be a movie so there’s that.

Overall , I give it a B-!!.

Walt Disney Company (DIS) stock is down over 40% over the past five years due to linear TV decline, heavy early losses in streaming, and shifting consumer demand regarding park pricing, even as core segments pivot toward profitability.

I just hope that the box office of the film doesn't affect them wrapping up the overarching plan with Thrawn.

I was quite looking forward to seeing Mando & Grogu join Ahsoka , the remaining Rebels crew and possibly Bona and his crew taking on Thrawn and his army in the Filoni film.

Probably mostly correct about M&G though they likely could have achieved those same goals with a fourth season, which would have cost less to make than the movie.

Live action Moana was a complete flop, though, sorry. Once the Moana tv show was converted in Moana 2, they should have put the live action one back on the shelf for a few years. Not many people were clamoring for a retelling of the first movie a year and a half after the sequel came out.

TheVisionary25 - 8/6/2026, 9:47 AM
@ptick - agreed

In regards to Moana , it was dumb to make a live action remake for a still active franchise whose animated sequel just came out almost 2 years ago and the original is only a decade old.

If you dig into the line items with a fine-tooth comb, I'm sure the uptick in merch sold was due to the Original Trilogy items. Similarly, the new Millenium Falcon attraction is clearly tied to the OT nostalgia, not Mandalorian and Grogu. If anyone wanted a Grogu doll, they bought one way back during Season 1, and they ain't buying a new one now. Neither character looks that different (yes I know they get bits of armor along the way).

Shareholders on that call were asking in their heads: "How did two extremely low budget horror films that came out of nowhere with no star power beat your big movies?"

So Star Wars made money from merch and Theme Parks. Just like it did last year and will do again next year. But the movie flopped. And this doesn't change that or make up for it. These are two separate business considerations.

@ObserverIO - "These are two separate business considerations."

Finally; someone who understands how business actually work. Each department operates on its own, so revenue from the merchandise goes back into that side of the business; it doesn't make up for money lost on the movie's budget and marketing; same logic applies to the theme parks.
