THE MANDALORIAN Star Katee Sackhoff Reveals Which Character Was Supposed To Die In The Season 2 Finale

The Mandalorian star Katee Sackhoff has confirmed some major changes were made to the show's season 2 finale, including the death of a key character that ended up being cut by Lucasfilm in post-production.

While reshoots were once cause for concern (and still can be in certain cases), they're par for the course in Hollywood these days. Many movies even leave time in production schedules for them, allowing filmmakers to reshape stories as they see fit...or after a poor response from test audiences!

It's a little different on TV, of course, but Bo-Katan Kryze actress Katee Sackhoff has just revealed a huge alteration that was made to The Mandalorian's season 2 finale.

Talking to Kristian Harloff (via SFFGazette.com), she confirmed that Simon Kassianides' Axe Woves was originally killed off in that episode!

"Axe, you know, we knew he was supposed to die last year," Sackhoff recalls. "That was the thing that no one could talk about. There was this moment where he sacrifices himself in that episode. We shot it. In Season 2."

"And then they were like, 'It needs to be Din. Not him,'" the actress continued. "So then you shoot a person's death and then they take it out and then there's still a scene left and then everyone's like, where'd they go?"

This explains why he was absent from the final battle aboard Moff Gideon's ship, something that raised many questions among fans seeing as he'd previously fought side-by-side with Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves. After season 3, we can put it down to him having a difference of opinion with his leader, but now know Woves was supposed to be dead and gone when Luke Skywalker showed up to save the day.

As for the moment Sackhoff alludes to here, we're guessing it's either when Din took on that hallway full of Stormroopers or perhaps even somehow related to his clash with Gideon (it's possible he and Woves originally fought the villain, with the latter killed in the process).

We're glad he lived to fight another day, anyway, as Axe was given the chance to shine in season 3 including in a finale that saw him send that cruiser hurtling into Gideon's base, a moment that led to the Moff's fiery demise.

Oh wow. If Axe Body Spray would have died then, I’m sure the audience would have been super sad. Then who would have piloted the cruiser into the completely unrealistically small explosion that happened in the season 3 finale? And why did the tie fighters stop attacking the ship? How did his jet pack get him to space when a few episodes earlier it couldn’t get them to the bird nest? Why did the tie fighters leave the Mandelorian ships fly right by then to go attack Gideon? Too many strange writing decisions in the season 3 finale.

Also, shouldn’t he be the leader of Mandalore now that he took Moff Gideon out when Bo and Mando couldn’t? Didn’t they just set up that rule earlier in season 3?

@mountainman - Also also, how did Gideon’s armor not protect him from a jet fuel explosion, which is far cooler than a lightsaber, which Beskar can protect from? How are the Praetorian Guards the worst guards to ever exist? How was the base security accessed by R5 from some random panel that was unguarded and unsecured? How did Gideon have magical tracking technology showing him where Din and Grogu were that we’ve never seen before or since in Star Wars? And given he had that technology, how did he let them walk right into his super clone room and destroy them? How can you add the force to a being that didn’t have it before?

@mountainman - Oh yeaahhh. lol. I didn't think about that. Yeah, by the arbitrary rules introduced haphazardly in this season and last, Axe is now the leader of Mandalore.

@mountainman - Maybe it did. I don't know... At least, maybe they could try to find him.

Shhh... To quote my brother on this issue, "Stop thinking. Thinking is the enemy of this concept."

@dagenspear - And now that the Dark Saber has been destroyed, which is really dumb, this rule seems like the only way to determine it.

Episodes 7 & 8 were the best of the season but man season 3 was such a drop from the first two.

@mountainman - I think I liked episode 5 more.

@dagenspear - 5 was good too. 1 was ok. The rest was not very good and the bird abducting the kid and the Jack Black / Lizzo ones were the worst if the series.

man now I wish he died. They could have replaced the fight between him and Bo katan with a fight between Mando and Bo katan for the darksaber.

Or better yet, they could have kept his fight and just ADD ANOTHER FIGHT BETWEEN BO KATAN AND MANDO. Such a missed opportunity to take Din out of the running for leader of the mandalorians.

Should've killed him. Too many Star Wars characters survive battles that are supposed to be deadly. It's one Star Wars tradition that should end.

Why so much digital ink dedicated to these bullshit shows and nothing about PICARD S3 giving the [frick]ing blueprint on how to treat legacy characters and tell a story?

This site is leftover garbage.

@Batmangina - seriously. Season 3 of Picard was so amazing and in my opinion the best Trek since First Contact.

@Batmangina - nobody is stopping you from writing an article. Seems like you have a strong view on Picard, so why not put it on paper?

@bkmeijer1 - That's actually a valid point that I don't have a snarky response to

@Batmangina - I've doing the same the last few months, and although not a lot of people read them I do get the stuff out there I wanna see out there.

It's not really in-depth, but I can get a 700 word article out there in an hour.
