Taika Waititi is a very busy man. Hot off the heels of starring in Pixar's Lightyear, the filmmaker is now doing the rounds to promote Thor: Love and Thunder, a movie he wrote, directed, and also stars in as Korg. The actor has multiple projects in various stages of development beyond this one, including a Star Wars movie that's expected to be released either next year or in 2024.
However, before taking the helm of that, it sounds like Waititi will head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away for the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian.
Shooting has already finished on the show, and we're sure you'll recall that the actor and director helmed the season 1 finale and played fan-favourite bounty hunter IG-11. Slash Film recently shared some comments from Waititi on playing Blackbeard in Our Flag Means Death, and noted that he had directed multiple episodes of the upcoming third season.
That's since been updated to clarify that he will star in multiple episodes of the hit Disney+ series. Seeing as IG-11's death was pretty definitive when he blew himself up to save Din Djarin and company, it's hard to imagine that droid will return. There's even a statue paying tribute to him on Nevarro, something fans first spotted during "Chapter 12."
Whether Waititi will reprise the role or take on another is a mystery for now, but this is definitely exciting on a number of levels. As great as the filmmaker is behind the camera, it's always fun to see him step in front of it as an actor as well. Regardless of what role he takes on, don't expect any official details to be revealed for a while yet.
Lucasfilm announced at Star Wars Celebration that The Mandalorian will return next February, and while a sneak peek at Disney+ Day in September is possible, they'll likely hold off on showing too much before then.
Are you guys excited to see Waititi in The Mandalorian season 3?
