STAR WARS: ASHOKA - It Doesn't Appear As If Lars Mikkelsen Will Play Thrawn In The Series After All

We wanted the rumours to be true, but it now appears as if Lucasfilm hasn't turned to Star Wars Rebels actor Lars Mikkelsen to reprise the role of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming live-action Ahoksa.

Last year, a couple of popular rumours were seemingly confirmed when it was reported that Ahsoka had cast Aladdin star Mena Massoud as Ezra Bridger, and that Lars Mikkelsen would reprise his Star Wars Rebels role as the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn. Both seemed like perfect casting decisions, though the latter made fans very happy, especially as Mikkelsen really made Thrawn his own.

Over the weekend, we heard that both Ezra and Thrawn have only just officially been cast, and common sense tells us that's probably been done in time for a big Star Wars Celebration announcement. This contradicts those reports from 2021, as do comments from Jordan Maison.

The trusted Star Wars scooper says he's also heard that Thrawn has been cast, but says it wouldn't be Mikkelson taking on the role. If correct, a lot of fans are going to be understandably disappointed.

However, it's also not a major surprise.

While Jason Isaacs was excellent as The Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels, Rupert Friend has been chosen to play the live-action version of the villain in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are also characters who have been re-cast for their jump from animation, and as great as Mikkelsen would have been as Thrawn, Lucasfilm clearly feels they've found a better actor for the role (we also can't discount the possibility that the actor simply had no interest in playing Thrawn here).

SFFGazette.com will keep you updated on this one, but hopefully, an announcement is imminent.

Aside from Bo-Katan, all other animated characters have been recasted so far. So, this wouldn't surprise me at all.

Too bad though, since pretty much all the original actors would've done a solid job in live-action too as well I think.

@MrDandy - oh really? Still have to watch Boba Fett, so I didn't actually realize because I only saw a couple of stills of him on the internet

@bkmeijer1 - I think the thinking and maybe rightfully so is voice actors don’t always translate well into live action acting. 2 different skillsets just as valuable

@Superspecialawesomeguy - If this is the reason Isaacs isn't playing the Grand Inquisitor, and Lars isn't playing Thrawn well.... I would be ok with this.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Good choice. As runner-ups, I would suggest Michael Fassbender or Jon Hamm.

The issue with Thrawn is, his voice is so iconic. I know they recast for Ahsoka but Lars is a good actor with a lot of credits to his name (Sherlock, The Witcher) so to replace him with someone else is baffling. First Jason Isaacs now this. Urgh. Disney WHAT are you doing?

I’d still love know know why Jason Isaacs wasn’t cast as the GI. Maybe he passed as well? Hate to think they didn’t approach him.

A huge bummer if true, but I’ll take it with a grain of salt.

I wanted him recast with a younger actor anyways, personally.

Some of these actors take the voice work knowing full well that the characters are likely to be brought into live action and knowing they aren’t going to do that themselves. They book voice work because they have time between screen work and it’s quick turnaround/easy money. Not to say that they put less work into it, it’s just different work.

Try doing a bit of proofreading before posting your stuff Josh. It's spelled Ahsoka. You've misspelled it in numerous spots. You bum.

Anyone other than Lars Mikkelsen playing Thrawn actually hurts my excitement for the show.
