The Mass Effect universe has lost the studio that built it, but its jump to live action may still be on. Electronic Arts is closing BioWare and ending early development on the next Mass Effect game, while Amazon MGM Studios' television adaptation is reportedly still moving forward at Prime Video.
BioWare announced the closure earlier today (October 21st) in a statement shared on its blog and on X.
The End Of BioWare
"Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending," the studio wrote. "There is nothing easy about writing those words."
In a message to staff, EA's Cam Weber and David Tinson said a small team had been working on early development for the game, and explained, "We've made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we're closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace." They added that "BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly."
Bloomberg reports that the move is part of around 400 job cuts across EA, including about 50 at BioWare. EA says it will help affected employees explore other roles within the company.
Where The Mass Effect Series Stands
The obvious question for screen fans is what this means for Prime Video's show. Neither BioWare's statement nor EA's staff message mentioned it. Asked by The Verge, an EA spokesperson said there was "Nothing to share on that at this point," while Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment.
However, IGN reports, citing sources inside Prime Video, that the series remains in development at Amazon MGM Studios and that all of the creatives attached to the project are still on board. Nothing official has been announced about a green light, casting or a release date.
The adaptation was officially set up at Amazon in 2024. Daniel Casey, who co-wrote F9: The Fast Saga, is writing and executive producing, while Doug Jung (Mindhunter, Star Trek Beyond) joined as showrunner in 2025. The producing team also includes Karim Zreik, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu and BioWare's own Mike Gamble.
Not Shepard's Story
Gamble shared the clearest details about the show in his N7 Day post last November. "The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe's timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy," he wrote. "It won't be a retread of Commander Shepard's story."
He also said the writers room had worked out "how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game." With that game now canceled, the series may end up being the only new Mass Effect story fans get for some time.
A Bumpy Year For The Adaptation
The show has faced questions before. In April, The Ankler reported that Amazon's TV chief Peter Friedlander had asked for rewrites to make the series more appealing to non-gamers. Casey pushed back on Bluesky, writing, "I don't know where that 'non-gaming audiences' quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me."
In July, Casey told fans on Bluesky that he had nothing concrete to share but that work on the series continued and the writers were still writing.
Prime Video has strong reasons to keep going. Its Fallout series proved that a faithful video game adaptation set after the events of the games can become a major hit, and Mass Effect's galaxy of krogan, asari, turians and the Normandy crew offers a similar blank slate for new characters.
A Legacy Built For The Screen
Hollywood has tried to crack Mass Effect for years, including a long-stalled feature film attempt before the series moved to Amazon. The original trilogy, released between 2007 and 2012, was always cinematic, with branching dialogue, a memorable cast and a story about uniting a galaxy against the Reapers.
Whether the show becomes a farewell to BioWare's work or the start of a new era for the franchise is now up to Amazon and EA.
Would you still watch Amazon's Mass Effect series now that BioWare is closing, or does the studio's shutdown take the excitement out of it?
