Activision Blizzard announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to shatter theatrical box office and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars. The biggest entertainment launch in history set a new worldwide estimated five-day sell-through record of approximately $550 million, according to internal Activision estimates.

Modern Warfare 2's launch beat all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records*:

  • The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million)
  • The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)
  • The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, $500 million)
  • The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($66.4 million)
  • The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows ($220 million)
  • The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, $310 million)
Modern Warfare 2's blast radius also extends to Xbox LIVE, in which the blockbuster title's epic release established the following new standards, according to Microsoft:
  • More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
  • More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.
  • More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.
"In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. "The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media."

Despite the success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision Blizzard remains cautious about the U.S. and global economy as well as other variables that can affect industry fundamentals and our own performance, including consumer spending which remains a significant concern.

Modern Warfare 2 is rated "M" (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Language.

Are you really tryin' to play this card?

Dark Knight sold for $10 a ticket at movie theaters

Call of Duty sold for $60 a game - on three different home systems.

Do the math!

"Blizzard announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to shatter theatrical box office and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars."

No, Duh! You sold your games for 6x the price of a movie ticket - so obviously you are gonna make more money. People like how number statistics look on paper, and they know the majority of people won't bother to actually do the math and test their numbers.

I hate to be a downer, but these are sales numbers , not volume. So a game selling for $60-$80 a game can easily outsell a movie ($10/ticket) or a book ($25/book). I will give credit where credit is due and it is outselling grand theft, and looks to be an amazing game, but I hate misleading stats like this. Show us the units sold and then you can boast about your accomplishments.

This shouldn't be a surprise for anyone, and video game sales shouldn't be compared to movie ticket sales (at least not on this site).
There are a lot of "experts" who think that over the next 10-15 years video games will take over the entertainment industry. Movies will be much further down the list. The reason being, is that the quality of the visuals are getting better and better, the characters are portrayed by real actors, and it's an emmersive, interactive experience for the audience.
And they make a crap-load of money...

@ MultiPurposePoni

There isn't really anything great about these games, and they don't offer anything special from any other FPS. The only thing different is what you are aiming at. Nearly half (not all) the fan-base of these games are casual gamers who only play FPS - so they flow with the hype and the popular gaming trends. I'm not saying it's a bad game - but I am saying that anybody who has played other games in other genres couldn't come close to making a case that it's the best game ever.

I'm a big fan of COD4:MW so I appreciate this news, Nate. However, I have already had a big debate over this very topic with a friend, so I feel compelled to add that these numbers--and this announcement--are a tool of marketing and do not necessarily represent the popularity of the game versus The Dark Knight.

Consider...

Modern Warfare 2 sold $310 million worldwide in 24 hours compared with The Dark Knight taking in $67 million domestically in 24 hours. Not even taking into account the worldwide/global aspect of it, you have to consider the price of the video game compared with the price of a single movie ticket to see which is really more popular...

Assuming (conservatively) that each MW2 game is $60, that means 5.25 million people bought the game the opening day of its release. Now, assuming (again, conservatively) that each TDK ticket is $10, that means 6.7 million bought a ticket to the movie the opening day of its release.

The Dark Knight still wins!

@multi - based on your pic, I'm assuming you're a military man (good on you), and as such, you've seen war/violence in real life. Because of that experience, you probably can't enjoy these types of games like other people would. Just like real race car drivers wouldn't get a kick out of Forza 3. For most people, these games are a fantasy...

Memory muscle control should be different when you step outside with your sidearm or rifle. I know I can tell the difference between vibration of a controller and a recoil of 30.06 or 308.

This is true. But I'm not in combat right now, and when it comes to the place when the Muslims are marching down my street, I don't think I'll be in combat shape anyway.

Tea, that is so wrong on so many levels.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Obviously it cost more, but it also cost LESS to make than it did TDK. So, their profit margin is far far greater than that of TDK.

It's amazing how much videogames today are making. The people that own the companies that make these games are banking big time.
