In a recent blog post, Bungie outlined the next chapter of Destiny. One major talking point is to rerelease and update vaulted campaigns to meet the current standards of New Light, giving players a chance to revisit the game’s lived history. However, bringing back much content would inevitably make the game massive. With the 10th anniversary of Destiny 2 coming up as well, Bungie could use this as an opportunity to split New Light into two experiences: Destiny 2 celebrating the Light & Darkness Saga, while Destiny 3 would become the foundation for expanding the Fate Saga.
Once the vaulted content has been rereleased and updated, Bungie could rebrand New Light back into Destiny 2 on the game's tenth anniversary. Similar to World of Warcraft Classic, this Anniversary Edition would preserve the lived history and include the campaigns (9), destinations (14), the Operations playlists (including Gambit and Trials of Osiris) and exotics from the Light & Darkness Saga. A Light & Darkness Collection would also feature the Raids (7), Dungeons (7), Seasonal activities (15), Strikes (21), Crucible maps (31), Gambit Maps (6), Protocols (10) and Arenas (7) tied to the destinations.
Next, Bungie could build a second New Light experience using the content focused on the IX and fold it in with Destiny 3 plans. This allows them to keep building on New Light's technical foundation, and introduce a new onboarding campaign alongside Edge of Fate and Renegades. Moreover, Bungie could update and add Destiny's destinations (5), and the Raids (4), Dungeons (2), Seasonal activities (5), Strikes (16), Crucible maps (27) and Protocols (2) set within them. Moving the matchmaking content to Destiny 3 also allows Bungie to discontinue support for the original game.
Lastly, the Leviathan and its activities can return as part of a 10th Year Anniversary Pack. This results in a game with three campaigns, ten destinations, the Operations playlists (including Trials of the Nine) and exotics. Like the Anniversary Edition, this new Fate Collection would include the Raids (7), Raid Lairs (2), Dungeons (4), Seasonal activities (7), Strikes (16), Crucible maps (30), Protocols (3) and Arenas (3) set in those destinations. In both editions, campaigns and destinations would be free to all players, while endgame activities and exotics would require owning the expansion packs.
Another way to celebrate the Light & Darkness Saga is by adapting it for the big screen. Since the games are the player's story, and by extent the Guardian's story, the films could explore a darker future without the Young Wolf. It could use the major stories as a foundation while showing what happens when the Guardian never arrives. Amanda Holliday could become the protagonist, supported by Cayde-6, Eris, Elsie and Ana Bray, and Mara and Uldren Sov. A companion TV show based on the Golden, Dark and City Ages could provide background on these characters.
Destiny: The Taken King opens with Amanda Holliday arriving at the Last City. Developing herself as pilot and expert on Old Earth technology, she helps Ana Bray clear the Skywatch. Together they activate the Array and reconnect with Rasputin. Amanda discovers a Hive infestation, leading to Eris Morn’s involvement. Joined by Elsie on the Moon, the trio defeats Crota, only to be warned of Oryx. They seek aid from the Awoken, but Mara Sov will only help if they defeat the traitorous Skolas. Afterwards, the Awoken join the fight against Oryx, who is eventually defeated in the Black Garden.
Destiny: The Witch Queen starts with Uldren Sov staging a prison break and luring Cayde-6 into a trap to kill him. Amanda follows Uldren to the Dreaming City, where he attempts to free Mara from the Ascendant Realm. Instead, Savathûn emerges and kills Uldren. Amanda, unable to chase after her, seeks out Elsie and Drifter on Europa. After helping them steal Statis from Eramis, they receive a warning from the Witness. While Elsie and the Drifter go to confront a Light-wielding Savathûn, Amanda defends the Last City from Eramis, until Eris arrives to aid Savathûn and leaves the city in ruins.
Destiny: God of War Vengeance finally sees the Witness arrive, with former Cabal emperor Calus as its disciple. Calus travels to Neptune, with Amanda, Crow and Osiris in tow. There, he activates the veil, enabling the Witness to breach the Traveler. The Coalitions follows him, but only manages to defeat the Witness when his power is siphoned away. Amanda traces the energy to the Moon, where the Coalition discovers Xivu Arath and Eris, now a dark Hive god, being behind it. A final battle erupts, but ends when the Traveler suddenly erupts in light and sends Elsie back in time.
